Centenary Square Birmingham, West Midlands, England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 24 May 2025.
About the photograph.
This photo shows a lady or a transgender lady, holding up a placard showing her support for the Gaza people during the Gaza War, during the build-up of the Birmingham Pride parade that was getting ready around that time.
The photo was left in colour, instead of my usual convert to black and white, so that the colours of the flags and the text on the placard can be seen.
I had spotted her with that sign, but unfortunately didn’t get the auto focus locked on correctly, or the settings wrong, resulting in a not very good photo to me, but she was turning around, and I only had barely seconds to get the placard in full view.
About the event.
The Birmingham Pride started as a grassroots pride events and community gatherings as far back as 1972, however the official multi-day festival over the May bank holiday first started in 1997. The modern festival had been going on for 28 years at the time I took the photographs.
The parade route tends to start at Victoria Square, but at that time in 2025, the route was shifted to Centenary Square due to roadworks at New Street very near Victoria Square, needing the parade to be routed down Pinfold Street.
The parade usually has over 5,000 people from more than 150 organizations taking part in the parade, which tend to be approximately 1.5 miles in length, and would take them approximately 45 to 60 minutes to complete.
About as much as over 75,000 people would attend and watch the annual parade through the city.
The parade ends at Hurst Street in the Birmingham’s area known as Gay Village, where anyone who bought tickets could attend the street parties or the festival area.
