Day Two of HRC Foundation’s 2020 Time to THRIVE Conference Wraps
The second day of HRC Foundation’s seventh annual Time to THRIVE Conference concluded on Saturday after a day full of featured speakers, special guests, breakout workshops, a panel discussion and a film screening.
Time to THRIVE is held in partnership with the American Counseling Association and the National Education Association, with AT&T, BBVA Compass and Toyota as presenting sponsors. In its seventh year, HRC Foundation’s premier national event addresses safety, inclusion and well-being for LGBTQ youth, and brings together youth-serving professionals to discuss best practices for working with and caring for LGBTQ youth and their families in schools, community centers, health care settings and beyond.

During this morning plenary, speakers include Youth Ambassadors Makayla Humphrey, Brooklyn Adele Owen, Nhandi Craig, Joseph Reed Jr., Sean Bender-Prouty and Ace Auker and, Senior Analyst of Corporate Tax Projects and Chair of the Spectrum LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group of Toyota Motor North America Brandon Willingham, HRC Foundation Welcoming School’s Johanna Eager, Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer of the YMCA of the USA Lynda Gonzales-Chavez, CEO and Executive Director of The Trevor Project Amit Paley, members of HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council Lizette Trujillo and Ashley Rhodes-Courter andExecutive Director of National Parent Teacher Association Nathan Monell.

During the lunch plenary, attendees heard from HRC Youth Ambassadors, Nicole Talbot, Zimar Batista, Zimar Batista, Jonathan Leggette and Avi Pacheco, Rep. Angie Craig and CDC Director of the Division of Adolescent and School Health, National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention Dr. Kathleen Ethier.

HRC Foundation’s HBCU Program Director Leslie Hall also facilitated a panel discussion about the intersecting identities of LGBTQ people of color with current and former Youth Ambassadors Nakiya Lynch, Nhandi Craig and Joseph Reed Jr., Zoey Luna and Sameer Jha.

Throughout the afternoon, attendees took part in breakout workshops before watching a screening of the film, “The Most Dangerous Year” and participating in a Q&A session with the filmmaker and cast members in the evening.

It was a joy to present about the work of Faith, Hope & Love: Building Safer and More Welcoming Congregations for LGBTQ+ Youth at @humanrightscampaign’s #TimeToThrive conference with @therealrebekah and @lee.zandstra. We passionately believe in this work and the importance of people of faith loudly, boldly, and joyfully proclaiming that LGBTQ+ folx are whole and holy… and actively creating affirming faith spaces.
