HRC Endorses New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for Re-Election

HRC Endorses New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for Re-Election

Today, HRC announced its endorsement of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) for re-election to the U.S. Senate. Senator Gillibrand will speak this Saturday at the 2018 HRC Greater New York Gala — one of organization’s largest events of the year, attracting more than 1,000 of HRC’s most active leaders, supporters and members.

“Senator Gillibrand has spent her career fighting for equality — for LGBTQ people, for workers, for women and for families,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “From fighting back against Donald Trump’s transgender military ban to pushing for LGBTQ non-discrimination protections through the Equality Act, she fights for what’s right and she never backs down. New Yorkers and all Americans need her leadership now more than ever before as we pull the emergency brake on the Trump-Pence administration’s hate-fueled agenda.”

A leader for LGBTQ equality in Congress, Senator Gillibrand has consistently scored a perfect 100 percent on the HRC Congressional Scorecard throughout her time in the Senate. In response to President Trump’s discriminatory attempt to implement a transgender military ban, Gillibrand announced bipartisan legislation to protect currently serving transgender troops from being discharged. She also recently spoke out against violence targeting LGBTQ Americans and the critical need for equality voters to make their voices heard at the ballot box.

HRC recently announced a bold, proactive grassroots expansion with the launch of HRC Rising — a campaign to accelerate progress in states from coast-to-coast, resist the politics of hate, fight anti-LGBTQ legislation, and fuel pro-equality candidates and initiatives. The expansion is the biggest strategic investment in the organization’s 37-year history. HRC has identified more than 5 million New Yorkers as likely Equality Voters, meaning they are strong supporters of progressive LGBTQ policies including same-sex marriage, adoption by LGBTQ people, and laws that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Telemundo novela includes a trans storyline

Telemundo novela includes a trans storyline

The Telemundo original, Sangre de Mi Tierra novela features a character who is transitioning. Hector Medina, a cuban-native, portrays Leonardo, who is exploring her gender identity. Creators have told media outlets they hope Leonardo’s character will promote understanding of trans people and assist families in similar situations. The soap opera also plans on addressing the problematic nature of masculinity and violence against women.

This will be Medina’s third time portraying a trans person following El Rey de La Habana (2015) and his award-winning performance in Viva (2015). Medina has expressed in outlets his support for the trans community. However, transgender people have spoken out loudly in recent years about how the practice of casting cisgender men to portray transgender women contributes to a culture that refuses to accept trans women as women.

Sangre de Mi Tierra airs M-F 9pm/8c on Telemundo.

‘Glee’ Star Mark Salling Dead of Apparent Suicide

‘Glee’ Star Mark Salling Dead of Apparent Suicide

Glee star Mark Salling has died of an apparent suicide at the age of 35, according to TMZ.

We’re told his body was found at the Los Angeles River in Sunland … the area where he lived.  We do not yet know the manner of death.

The former “Glee” star was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography involving a pre-pubescent minor. Prosecutors say he had 50,000 images of underage children.

Salling was expected to face 4 to 7 years in prison as part of a plea deal, pay $50,000 to each victim seeking restitution,  and “register as a sex offender and participate in counseling or psychiatric treatment,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Salling played Puck on the Ryan Murphy hit about the William McKinley High School glee club called the New Directions, from 2009 to 2015

‘Big Brother’ Host Julie Chen Talks Omarosa: ‘Now She Has a Place to Talk All Day Long’ – WATCH

Big Brother host Julie Chen sat down with Stephen Colbert last night to talk about the casting of Omarosa in the upcoming first-ever U.S. Celebrity Big Brother, which has been planned as counter-programming to the Winter Olympics.

Said Chen: “I think everyone wants to know what her 12 months was like in the White House and they want to know the circumstances of her exiting the White House…and I think now she has a place to talk all day long, 24/7, for three weeks, in the Big Brother House, about it.”

Also cast are Shannon Elizabeth, Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Real Housewife Brandi Glanville, former NBA star Metta World Peace, UFC light heavyweight champ Chuck Liddell, actors James Maslow and Marissa Winokur, TV personality Ross Matthews and Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez.

The celebrities are currently sequestered, Chen said, and go into the house later this week.

Omarosa is the last celebrity to go in. “Surprisingly, she signed the papers and said ‘yes.’ And we were like, ‘guess what, get another bed!’”

‘Call Me By Your Name’ Director Spills Details About What’s He’s Planning for the Film’s Sequel

‘Call Me By Your Name’ Director Spills Details About What’s He’s Planning for the Film’s Sequel
Call Me By Your Name

Call Me By Your Name sequel

Back in October, we reported that Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino was considering a sequel to the film based on the Andre Aciman novel, and he recently let The Hollywood Reporter in on a few additional details of the plot turns he’s considering.

Aciman’s novel takes place in 1987 at the height of the AIDS crisis. Guadagnino told THR that he shifted the timeframe of the film back to 1983, close to the time that the HIV virus was discovered.

The sequel, Guadagnino said, would make the AIDS crisis “a very relevant part of the story.”

Reports THR:

“I think Elio [Timothee Chalamet] will be a cinephile, and I’d like him to be in a movie theater watching Paul Vecchiali’s Once More,” a 1988 film about a man who falls in love with a man after he leaves his wife, which was the first French movie to deal with AIDS. “That,” said Guadagnino, “could be the first scene [in the sequel].”

To justify his idea of a Before Sunrise sort of film trilogy, Guadagnino cites the final 40 pages of Aciman’s novel, which look ahead to the next 20 years in the lives of Elio and Oliver.

Added Guadagnino: “In my opinion, Call Me can be the first chapter of the chronicles of the life of these people that we met in this movie.”

Back in October, Dark Horizons reported:

Guadagnino, appearing at the BFI London Film Festival, spoke of his sequel plans during a Q&A: “I want to do a sequel because Timothee Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel – they are all gems. The texture we built together is very consistent. We created a place in which you believe in the world before them. They are young but they are growing up.”

The sequel would be set seven years later and Guadagnino says his ideal scenario would be for the second film to be made for a 2020 release. This would put Chalamet about the same age as his character, while Hammer would be just two years older (as opposed to five years older like in the first).

In the original book, Elio and Oliver meet up 15 years later in the United States with Oliver now married with a wife and children. Guadagnino says unlike the book, Elio’s character won’t necessarily turn out to be gay: “I don’t think Elio is necessarily going to become a gay man. He hasn’t found his place yet. I can tell you that I believe that he would start an intense relationship with Marzia [Esther Garrel’s character] again.”
