Supreme Court Justice Nominee Brett Kavanaugh: Picking up where Scalia left off?

Today, the confirmation hearings for the next Supreme Court Justice begin in D.C., where Judge Kavanaugh, Trump’s nominee, may be confirmed to the Supreme Court for a lifetime appointment—a decision that will have an impact for decades.

But what kind of Justice will Brett Kavanaugh be? His record has still largely not been made public, itself a concerning factor during this nomination process. Instead, advocates must look to his public statements and endorsements to get a sense of his political views. And they’re not looking good.

Judge Kavanaugh has described the notoriously homophobic Justice Antonin Scalia, as a “hero” and a “judicial role model,” and praised his dissent in Obergefell v. Hodges —the landmark ruling that made same-sex marriage legal in all fifty states. Throughout his career, Justice Scalia spoke extensively about his hostility towards LGBTQ people, and was unwavering in his comparison of homosexuality to murder. In his dissent in Obergefell v. Hodges, Scalia argued that the legalization of marriage equality was a “threat to American democracy” that “robs the People of… the freedom to govern themselves.” What did Judge Kavanaugh think of that?

GLAAD has sent to media background information on Scalia’s “worst hits”, which are included below. A role model? They’re not the kind of American values we’d expect an incoming Supreme Court Justice to support.

Furthermore, while serving in the George W. Bush administration, Kavanaugh worked closely with the team that pushed for the so-called Federal Marriage Amendment, which would have defined marriage in the United States as a union of one man and one woman under federal law. He’s also received support and endorsements from the Family Research Council (FRC), which has been designated an anti-LGBTQ hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center; and the Federalist Society, which has produced materials arguing against every major LGBTQ policy proposal, including the Employment Non Discrimination Act and transgender accommodations.

Kavanaugh was also vetted, and is considered to be a “stellar” judge, by  the virulently anti-LGBTQ Heritage Foundation, which has claimed that marriage equality would make people less monogamous, increase abortions, and eventually lead to “group marriage,” and consistently opposes transgender rights.   

President Trump’s concerning selection of Brett Kavanaugh, and his record of appointing anti-LGBTQ federal judges, has put hard won LGBTQ rights and protections in jeopardy. In response, GLAAD Campus Ambassador Tony Hernandez went to Capitol Hill to personally hand-deliver questions about Judge Kavanaugh’s past remarks and endorsements, and ask the 21 members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to confront Judge Kavanaugh with these questions during the confirmation hearing process.

— Dissenting in a 1996 ruling in favor of state’s rights to ban LGB discrimination, Scalia equated gay rights with heinous acts, writing that he “had thought that one could consider certain conduct reprehensible — murder, for example, or polygamy, or cruelty to animals — and could exhibit even ‘animus’ toward such conduct”

— Defended his comparison of homosexuality to murder: “It’s a form of argument that I thought you would have known, which is called the ‘reduction to the absurd. If we cannot have moral feelings against homosexuality, can we have it against murder? Can we have it against other things?”

— Dismissed court protections of gay rights by sarcastically asking, “What about pederasts?”…“What about child abusers?”

— Didn’t believe gay sex was protected by constitutional right to privacy: “Homosexual sodomy? Come on. For 200 years, it was criminal in every state”

— Warned in his 2003 Lawrence v. Texas dissent that decriminalizing sodomy would lead to legalizing bestiality, incest, and more: “State laws against bigamy, same-sex marriage, adult incest, prostitution, masturbation, adultery, fornication, bestiality, and obscenity are likewise sustainable only in light of Bowers’ validation of laws based on moral choices. Every single one of these laws is called into question by today’s decision; the Court makes no effort to cabin the scope of its decision to exclude them from its holding.”

— Called the Supreme Court’s 2015 legalization of marriage equality a “threat to American democracy” that “robs the People of… the freedom to govern themselves.”

— Wrote in his Lawrence dissent: “Many Americans do not want persons who openly engage in homosexual conduct as partners in their business, as scoutmasters for their children, as teachers in their children’s schools, or as boarders in their home. They view this as protecting themselves and their families from a lifestyle that they believe to be immoral and destructive.”

— Also in Lawrence, he noted that the ban on sodomy “undoubtedly imposes constraints on liberty,” before defending that ban by saying, “So do laws prohibiting prostitution, recreational use of heroin, and, for that matter, working more than 60 hours per week in a bakery.”

— Wrote of bans on gay sex: “Men and women, heterosexuals and homosexuals, are all subject to [Texas’] prohibition of deviate sexual intercourse with someone of the same sex.”

— Incorrectly claimed that sociologists are engaged in great debate about the legitimacy of gay parents: “If you redefine marriage to include same-sex couples, you must permit adoption by same-sex couples, and there’s considerable disagreement among sociologists as to what the consequences of raising a child in a single-sex family [are]. Some States do not do not permit adoption by same-sex couples for that reason.”

Introducing Skype call recording—now you can capture, save, and share special moments

When we added video to Skype calls over ten years ago, the ability to share important moments with loved ones took a big step forward. Today, we’re introducing call recording to help capture special moments in a Skype call with your loved ones or record important meetings with your colleagues.

Call recording is completely cloud-based and is now available on the latest version of Skype and on most platforms, except Windows 10. Call recording is coming to Windows 10 with the latest version of Skype releasing in the coming weeks.

As soon as you start recording, everyone in the call is notified that the call is being recorded—so there are no surprises. If you are on a video call, Skype will record everyone’s video as well as any screens shared during the call. After the call, you can save and share the recorded call for the next 30 days.

How Skype call recording works

You can start call recording any time during a Skype call on both the desktop and mobile devices.

To start call recording on the desktop, at the bottom of the screen click the  sign, then select Start recording.

To start call recording on mobile, tap the  sign and then tap Start recording.

On both desktop and mobile, a banner appears in your Skype screen letting everyone know you’ve started recording the call.

After the call, the recording is finalized and then posted to your chat where it is available for 30 days. You and everyone on the call can save the recording locally or share the recording to your contacts any time during the 30 days.

How to save a Skype call recording

To save a call on desktop, go to your chat and click More options, and then select Save to Downloads to save to your downloads folder. You can also select Save as and navigate to the folder where you want it saved. The recording will be saved as an MP4 file.

On mobile, just tap and hold the recorded call in the chat. When the menu is displayed, tap Save. The recording will automatically download and save to your device’s camera roll as an MP4 file.

How to Share a Skype call recording

You can also share a recorded call from the chat. On desktop, click More options and then select Forward.

When the Forward Message box is displayed, you can send to all the suggested contacts who you want to share the recorded call with.

To share a call recording on mobile, tap and hold the recorded call and then tap Forward.

When the Forward Message box is displayed, tap the suggested contacts who you want to share the recorded call with, and then, at the top of the screen, tap Send.

Anderson Cooper on Monday night discussed two tweets from Donald Trump on Monday which attacked his Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Department of Justice.

Tweeted Trump: “Two long running, Obama era, investigations of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department. Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time. Good job Jeff……….The Democrats, none of whom voted for Jeff Sessions, must love him now. Same thing with Lyin’ James Comey. The Dems all hated him, wanted him out, thought he was disgusting – UNTIL I FIRED HIM! Immediately he became a wonderful man, a saint like figure in fact. Really sick!”

Cooper asked Norman Eisen, former White House ethics czar for President Obama, if U.S. democracy is strong enough to withstand Trump’s attacks on it.

Said Eisen: “Democracy is more powerful than this autocracy. And it’s coming for Donald Trump so he’s pushing back.”

Replied Cooper: “You really believe that though? That the institutions are stronger than- or strong enough to resist this kind of thing from the president of the United States?”

Said Eisen: “I do, Anderson. In every case, sooner or later, every dog gets its day. And sooner or later, democracy is more powerful including because the rule of law.”

In related news, Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) blasted Trump for his tweets, saying: “The United States is not some banana republic with a two-tiered system of justice – one for the majority party and one for the minority party. These two men have been charged with crimes because of evidence, not because of who the President was when the investigations began. Instead of commenting on ongoing investigations and prosecutions, the job of the President of the United States is to defend the Constitution and protect the impartial administration of justice.”

Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) also denounced them: “This is not the conduct of a President committed to defending and upholding the constitution, but rather a President looking to use the Department of Justice to settle political scores.”

HRC MOURNS VONTASHIA BELL, BLACK TRANS WOMAN SHOT IN SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA: According to local media, which misgendered her in their reports, Bell, 18, was shot multiple times early Thursday morning. Police found Bell lying on the street in the Cedar Grove neighborhood. Police rushed her to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. No suspect has been identified, but investigators are asking anyone with information to contact  Shreveport Police Investigators at (318) 673-6955. Bell’s death marks the 13th known killing of a transgender person in Louisiana since January 2013, the highest among all 50 states. More from HRC.

Atlanta Braves’ Organist Trolls Anti-Gay Cubs Player Daniel Murphy with LGBTQ-Themed Songs: WATCH

Matthew Kaminski, the organist for the Atlanta Braves, was hailed on Twitter Friday night after trolling anti-gay Cubs second baseman Daniel Murphy with a trio of songs related to LGBTQ topics and equality.

Murphy, who has never changed his view that he “disagrees with the (gay) lifestyle, 100 percent,” was traded to the Cubs last month just five days before “Out at Wrigley,” the franchise’s long-running LGBTQ Pride night.

The songs Kaminski chose each time Murphy came to bat: “Lola” by The Kinks which is about a man’s encounter with a possibly trans woman, “What The World Needs Now is Love” by Hal King and Burt Bacharach, and “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga.

The selections did not go unnoticed.

It’s unclear if Murphy knew he was being trolled, but others clearly did. Kaminski tweeted: “#Braves vs #Cubs – Wow! My Twitter feed was on fire tonight! Thank you for all the love ”

Murphy, who made the homophobic remarks in 2015 about out former MLB player Billy Bean, was asked to clarify his remarks before his debut with the Cubs, and it was clear that little had changed about his views.

Said Murphy: “What I would say to that is that I’ve been able to foster a really positive relationship with Billy Bean since that time. I’m really excited to continue to cultivate that relationship that we’ve built. Billy, his job I think is Ambassador for Inclusion with Major League Baseball is a vital role so that everyone feels included, not only in our industry in baseball, but in all aspects of life. Again, I hope that anyone that comes to Wrigley Field feels welcome. That’s my hope. That’s the hope of Major League Baseball. And speaking with Billy Bean — again, like I said, the relationship that we’ve been able to forge — that’s what he’s trying to do. I think that’s what we’re trying to do as an industry. We want people to feel welcome, whatever walk of life that might be.”

When asked if he had a message to any fans conflicted with his presence on the team, Murphy responded: “Oh dear. I would hope that you would root for the Cubs.”

Here’s what Murphy had to say to NJ Advance Media in 2015:

“I disagree with his lifestyle. I do disagree with the fact that Billy is a homosexual. That doesn’t mean I can’t still invest in him and get to know him. I don’t think the fact that someone is a homosexual should completely shut the door on investing in them in a relational aspect. Getting to know him. That, I would say, you can still accept them but I do disagree with the lifestyle, 100 percent…

“Maybe, as a Christian, that we haven’t been as articulate enough in describing what our actual stance is on homosexuality. We love the people. We disagree the lifestyle. That’s the way I would describe it for me. It’s the same way that there are aspects of my life that I’m trying to surrender to Christ in my own life. There’s a great deal of many things, like my pride. I just think that as a believer trying to articulate it in a way that says just because I disagree with the lifestyle doesn’t mean I’m just never going to speak to Billy Bean every time he walks through the door. That’s not love. That’s not love at all.”

Bean heard Murphy’s comments after he received several emails asking how he felt about the player’s “gay lifestyle” comments. Bean responded to Murphy’s comments with class in an article he wrote for MLB.com.

Said Bean:

“After reading his comments, I appreciate that Daniel spoke his truth. I really do. I was visiting his team, and a reporter asked his opinion about me. He was brave to share his feelings, and it made me want to work harder and be a better example that someday might allow him to view things from my perspective, if only for just a moment.

“I respect him, and I want everyone to know that he was respectful of me. We have baseball in common, and for now, that might be the only thing. But it’s a start.

“The silver lining in his comments are that he would be open to investing in a relationship with a teammate, even if he “disagrees” with the lifestyle. It may not be perfect, but I do see him making an effort to reconcile his religious beliefs with his interpretation of the word lifestyle. It took me 32 years to fully accept my sexual orientation, so it would be hypocritical of me to not be patient with others.”

Bill Gubrud, who created Out at Wrigley in 2001, told Block Club Chicago: I just don’t like the man at all. Honestly, when someone says they don’t like the gay lifestyle, what they’re saying is, ‘I think it’s gross when two guys are having sex together.’ And that’s exactly what Daniel Murphy meant. There weren’t many openly gay sports fans [during the first Gay Day in 2001] because of the fear of retribution, of going to a ballpark and all that … . Stupid comments like that from Daniel Murphy, there’s no place in society for anything like that.”

Wrote Cyd Zeigler at Outsports: ‘I have never advocated for chasing every single Christian person out of sports who “disagrees” with the fact that I’m married to my husband. But when someone decides to publicly elevate the anti-gay environment of the sports world, it’s up to him to fix that. That Murphy hasn’t done that, and that the Cubs would sign him days before Out At Wrigley, is disappointing.’

The Best Moments of Summer Movie Season 2018

How was your moviegoing this summer? Hopefully you made the most of your Moviepass before it died of two Mission: Impossible-related causes (the huge opening weekend of M:I -Fallout and the Impossible Mission of subsidizing everyone’s daily movie tickets when you’ve charged them less than one ticket a month for a subscription fee!)

Rush to see “We the Animals”. It’s a mesmerizing film about the queer youngest son of a struggling Latino family

The summer movie season was, in some ways, going along great with the usual array of hidden indie treasures and mildly amusing mega-budget spectacles. But, if not for the significant pleasures of Crazy Rich Asians and the stunning LGBT indie We The Animals this past month, it would have ended on a sour note. Why? Well, a month ago the Academy made what felt like an apocalyptic announcement: they would be adding a “popular achievement” category because they ignore blockbusters (fyi: that’s false knee-jerk media trolling. I’ve studied it), and they’re also cutting down the length of the show by dismissing craft categories. I’m hoarse from ranting about this but they appear to have no self awareness about how they’ve remained such a hotly debated institution for 90 years. (Hint: It isn’t because they changed constantly with every cultural whim in an effort to stay “relevant”. So why are they planning to emulate awards shows that are significantly less popular than they are?)

With Oscar’s extra and redundant “popular achievement” plans in mind, let’s pass out some highly disposable nominations and awards for summer movie season.

(You can’t really count The Meg as an “original” because there have been dozens of monster shark movies since Jaws created the “summer movie season” way back in 1975.)  Most Popular Achievement is the same thing as “Best Brand Awareness” so, it doesn’t really need an Oscar! Or, to quote the immortal Don Draper:

But maybe some of these next movies do deserve artistic trophies of one kind or another…

(Alphabetically. If you missed them, make sure to check them out when they hit DVD or streaming)

  • BLACKKKLANSMAN– Spike Lee’s sharp, funny, sobering true(ish) joint about a black cop and a Jewish cop who infiltrate the Klu Kux Klan in the 1970s.
  • CRAZY RICH ASIANS – Wonderfully cast, funny, rewatchable. Did the RomCom genre finally get its mojo back or is this a one-off?
  • DISOBEDIENCE – A heart-wrenching Jewish drama about a lesbian affair from the very talented Chilean director Sebastian Lelio (of A Fantastic Woman Oscar-winning fame).
  • EIGHTH GRADE – Bo Burnham’s pitch-perfect debut makes you feel like you’re in middle school again with all the awkward raw feeling that implies… but it’s also very funny.
  • FIRST REFORMED -Ethan Hawke is Oscar-worthy in this fascinating modern riff on Bergman’s Winter Light.

  • HEREDITARY – Shocking horror elevated by a truly inspired Toni Collette.
  • THE INCREDIBLES 2 – A happy reunion. Elastigirl remains awesome.
  • MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE -FALLOUT – I wouldn’t say it’s the best in the series (that’d be Ghost Protocol) but what a ride.
  • TULLY – The most misunderstood film of the summer — so layered, moving, and funny.
  • WE THE ANIMALS – a mesmerizing gay memoir. I didn’t think this book was adaptable to screen; I was wrong.
