HRC Mourns Shantee Tucker, a Trans Woman Killed in Philadelphia
HRC mourns the senseless loss of Shantee Tucker, a Black transgender woman who was killed Wednesday morning in Philadelphia in the 19th known case of deadly violence against the transgender community this year, and the third known case of deadly gun violence against Black trans women in the past seven days. Sixteen of the known victims of deadly violence against transgender people in 2018 have been women of color.
The deaths this past week of Tucker, Dejanay Stanton in Chicago and Vontashia Bell in Louisiana — all Black transgender women — underscore the urgent need to address the epidemic of violence against the transgender community.
According to a local news outlet, Tucker, 30, was found on a highway in Philadelphia after being shot in the back. She was taken to Temple University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Tucker had just celebrated her 30th birthday. Friends and family honored her life and mourned her death on Facebook, recalling that she was like “another big sister” to them and remembering her “beautiful spirit and fun aura.” Her cousin said that Tucker was now “waiting in line to get her halo.”
Violence against transgender people, particularly against trans women of color, is an epidemic that urgently needs to be addressed by our communities, elected officials and institutions.
Last fall, the HRC Foundation and the Trans People of Color Coalition released a comprehensive report detailing this tragic epidemic that made 2017 the deadliest year on record for transgender people. If this disturbing trend continues, 2018 may soon see more reported lives lost than in the previous year.

NYT Publishes Shocking Anonymous Op-Ed by Senior White House Official Who Warns Trump is ‘Detrimental to the Health of Our Republic’
The New York Times has published an anonymous op-ed by a senior Trump administration official who says that “many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.”
The official says they are doing so because “the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic,” adding that “ours is not the popular ‘resistance’ of the left” but one working toward the success of the policies he has put in place, successes that “have come despite — not because of — the president’s leadership style, which is impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective.”
Adds the official: “The root of the problem is the president’s amorality. Anyone who works with him knows he is not moored to any discernible first principles that guide his decision making. Although he was elected as a Republican, the president shows little affinity for ideals long espoused by conservatives: free minds, free markets and free people. At best, he has invoked these ideals in scripted settings. At worst, he has attacked them outright. In addition to his mass-marketing of the notion that the press is the “enemy of the people,” President Trump’s impulses are generally anti-trade and anti-democratic…”
The op-ed confirms many of the reports in Bob Woodward’s new book Fear, which reported that top officials remove papers from Trump’s desk to stop him from seeing and signing them: “The erratic behavior would be more concerning if it weren’t for unsung heroes in and around the White House. Some of his aides have been cast as villains by the media. But in private, they have gone to great lengths to keep bad decisions contained to the West Wing, though they are clearly not always successful. It may be cold comfort in this chaotic era, but Americans should know that there are adults in the room. We fully recognize what is happening. And we are trying to do what’s right even when Donald Trump won’t.”
The NYT was also taking questions about the op-ed which would be answered by Op-Ed editor, James Dao.

Rami Malek Talks About Transforming into Freddie Mercury for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ – WATCH
Rami Malek sat down with Jimmy Kimmel to talk about becoming Freddie Mercury for the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which premieres on November 2.
As for how he got chosen for the role, Malek explained: “Our producers Graham King and Denis O’Sullivan saw me in Mr. Robot, of all things. I think a lot of it had to do with the jawline, because he does have a very austere jawline.”
He also wore a prosthetic: “I have fake teeth. Freddie Mercury as a kid was called ‘Bucky.’”
Malek also explained that he shot the iconic Wembley Stadium Live Aid performance on the first day of shooting: “It was the most terrifying thing ever. [The other Queen band members] were there constantly.”
Malek also spoke about meet Mercury’s sister, who “laughed” when she saw him as young Freddie.

Netflix has wasted no time burying Kevin Spacey’s character in the new House of Cards teaser, which features Claire Underwood at the grave of her husband. The new season airs November 2.

Last November, an allegation against Spacey by actor Anthony Rapp snowballed into an avalanche of similar accusations including filmmaker Tony Montana, who said that Spacey groped him in public in 2003, and the actor Roberto Cavazos.
That was followed by an as yet unnamed man who claimed Spacey raped him at 15, and 8 crew members on House of Cards who said they were harassed by Spacey as well as a London bartender who said Spacey flashed him and then tried to shut him up with an expensive watch.
Former Boston TV news anchor Heather Unruh said Spacey sexually assaulted her teen son on Nantucket in 2016.
Spacey was subsequently dumped by his agency, CAA, his publicist Polaris, and also by Netflix.
In July, it emerged that London’s Metropolitan Police were investigating three new claims of sexual assault by Spacey. Fellow actor Guy Pearce also said Spacey had once been“handsy” with him.

Seth Meyers on Trump’s ‘Absurd’ Nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to SCOTUS: It’s Like ‘Bonnie’ Appointing ‘Clyde’ — WATCH
“Let’s just step back for a moment and consider the fact that Trump is trying to appoint someone to a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court while simultaneously being implicated in a truly staggering number of criminal cases and corruption scandals,” said Seth Meyers at the opening of his ‘Closer Look’ at the Kavanaugh hearing. “That’s like Bonnie getting arrested and saying, ‘You know who would make a great judge?….Clyde.’”
Meyers then took viewers through the laundry list of advisers and staffers who are currently in trouble with the law, including Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, Michael Cohen, Michael Flynn, George Papadopoulos, Chris Collins, and Duncan Hunter.
Meyers then looked at Trump’s weekend tweets in which he attacked the Department of Justice for not covering for the Republicans involved in corruption scandals.
“Not only is Trump corrupt but he is obvious about it. He’s like a guy who tries to pick your pocket from the front.”
Meyers then turned to the Bob Woodward book and the conversations Trump had with his lawyers that are detailed in the book, specifically a discussion Trump had with lawyer John Dowd in which he tried to convince Dowd that he’d be a good witness.
“You would not be a good witness,” Dowd replied.
Meyers also talked about the conversation Woodward had with Trump during which Trump realized the book would be negative.
Quipped Meyers: “He’s like a guy who doesn’t understand why he’s being dumped. I’m breaking up with you because you’re dumb, annoying, selfish, ugly, and I don’t like you, and I’m not attracted to you in any way.”
Meyers continued that it’s “absurd,” given the above circumstances, that Trump should be allowed to appoint Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. And Republicans are trying to market him as a “car pool dad” who is perfectly harmless, despite the fact that they’re hiding thousands of background documents on him.
Meyers then looked at the first day of the Kavanaugh hearings, and the Democrats’ failed attempt to obstruct them, as well as Chuck Grassley’s pathetic gavel banging.

Hugh Jackman leaves the claws and mutton chops behind to indulge in his theatrical side when he portrays P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman. The flashy music musical also stars Zac Efron, Zendaya and Michelle Williams. Catch it premiering on HBO Saturday at 8 p.m. Eastern.
TV’s most dysfunctional family, the Gallaghers, returns for a new season of Shameless Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern on Showtime. The series features on of television’s most complicated gay characters, Ian Gallagher (Cameron Monoghan).

FEAR. Bob Woodward book is a terrifying look inside the Trump White House: ‘The 448-page book was obtained by The Washington Post. Woodward, an associate editor at The Post, sought an interview with Trump through several intermediaries to no avail. The president called Woodward in early August, after the manuscript had been completed, to say he wanted to participate. The president complained that it would be a “bad book,” according to an audio recording of the conversation. Woodward replied that his work would be “tough,” but factual and based on his reporting. A central theme of the book is the stealthy machinations used by those in Trump’s inner sanctum to try to control his impulses and prevent disasters, both for the president personally and for the nation he was elected to lead.’ Trump on Jeff Sessions: “This guy is mentally retarded. He’s this dumb Southerner. He couldn’t even be a one-person country lawyer down in Alabama.” Woodward on Trump: “Mattis was particularly exasperated and alarmed, telling close associates that the president acted like — and had the understanding of — ‘a fifth- or sixth-grader.’” John Kelly on Trump: “He’s an idiot. It’s pointless to try to convince him of anything. He’s gone off the rails. We’re in Crazytown. I don’t even know why any of us are here. This is the worst job I’ve ever had.”
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a statement on the Woodward book: “This book is nothing more than fabricated stories, many by former disgruntled employees, told to make the President look bad. While it is not always pretty, and rare that the press actually covers it, President Trump has broken through the bureaucratic process to deliver unprecedented successes for the American people. Sometimes it is unconventional, but he always gets results. Democrats and their allies in the media understand the President’s policies are working and with success like this, no one can beat him in 2020 – not even close.”
