Iconic San Francisco Gay Bar ‘The Stud’ to Close

Iconic San Francisco Gay Bar ‘The Stud’ to Close

The Stud

A San Francisco gay institution — The Stud — is set to close its doors in September due to skyrocketing rents. Its landlord raised the rent of the South of Market gay bar by 300%.

Michael McElhaney, The Stud’s owner, made the announcement to patrons and employees on Sunday.

But the bar’s closest friends are trying to save the business, NBC Bay Area reports:

Performer Mica Sigourney is looking beyond that, trying to form an ownership group among the bar’s closest friends.

“A group of 15 people – drag queens, artists, bar workers, politicos and others – are coming together to form a co-op and attempt to buy the business and keep it at this location,” said Sigourney, who has performed at the bar for eight years in the weekly drag show “Some Thing” as alter-ego VivvyAnne ForeverMore.

McElhaney likes the idea and hopes the bar lands in the hands of the community it has served “to create new memories, new generations.”

The group, called SOS: Save our Stud, launched a Facebook page and set up an email account — [email protected] — to keep the community informed of its actions and needs. Sigourney is heading up the SOS effort. The group also is asking the city to designate The Stud as a historic landmark.

Anti-Gay Christian Activist Halts Same-Sex Marriage on Isle of Man: WATCH

Anti-Gay Christian Activist Halts Same-Sex Marriage on Isle of Man: WATCH

Peter Murcott Isle of Man

Isle of Man mapDespite media reports yesterday that same-sex marriage is now legal on the Isle of Man, an anti-gay religious activist has successfully delayed the legislation.

In April, it was reported that the Isle of Man had legalized same-sex marriage. However Peter Murcott (above), a lay preacher and member of Christian Concern who has campaigned against gay rights, raised a petition which has prevented the law from being promulgated. The issue will now go before the privy council sitting on July 13th.

Peter Murcott I hope you are proud of your shameful behaviour in making the IOM the laughing stock of world. Loving people support =marriage

In an interview with Manx.net, Manx Rainbow Association’s Lee Vorster has explained how Murcott, a private citizen, halted the implementation of gay marriage on the island.

In 2013, Murcott and Christian Concern wrote to Queen Elizabeth asking her to refuse to give royal assent to same-sex marriage laws in England and Wales. The letter stated that “the effects of this measure upon the nation will be nothing short of catastrophic; but of even greater importance is that it will set the nation on a direct collision course with the Courts of Heaven, with all the attendant consequences.”

Manx Rainbow Association angry today claiming Peter Murcott has caused a halt to the IOM same sex marriage bill. It has gone privy council.

GLAAD and music superstars release single "Hands" to benefit victims and families of Orlando massacre

GLAAD and Interscope Records today released “Hands,” a musical tribute to the victims of Orlando, featuring Mary J Blige, Jason Derulo, Tyler Glenn, Selena Gomez, Halsey, Ty Herndon, Imagine Dragons, Juanes, Adam Lambert, Mary Lambert, Jennifer Lopez, the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, Kacey Musgraves, MNEK, Alex Newell, P!nk, Prince Royce, Nate Ruess, RuPaul, Troye Sivan, Jussie Smollett, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, and Meghan Trainor.  “Hands” is available now for digital download via iTunes.

“Orlando’s broken hearts have been lifted by the outpouring of love and support from people near and far,” said Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith. “There has been beauty in the midst of our grief and we are grateful to these talented artists, producers, and GLAAD for helping us mourn and laugh and cry and sing together.”

“The horrific attack on the LGBT community in Orlando has left us devastated, but not defeated,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “As we continue to mourn the crushing loss of 49 Americans, the majority of whom were Latino and whose lives were lost to hate, we stand resolved in paying tribute to their memory, supporting the victims and families, and working together to achieve full acceptance once and for all.”

“This senseless tragedy is a call to all of us to stand together and face down hatred, intolerance and violence…and having grown up a short drive from Orlando, it really brings it right to my doorstep,” commented John Janick, Chairman and CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M.  “We all know music has the power to heal, and I’m honored and grateful to be a part of whatever our business can do to help.”

“The second I heard about this horrible tragedy where so many of my LGBTQ brothers and sisters lost their lives, I immediately got on a plane to Orlando to volunteer my help anyway I could,” said “Hands” writer and producer Justin Tranter. “Putting this charity single together is just a way for me, and everyone involved to keep volunteering our help and promote peace and love in the world.”

“Hands” was written by Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels, and Blood Pop; produced by Blood Pop, Mark Ronson, and Justin Tranter.

GLAAD is on the ground in Orlando, working to support the work of local LGBT advocates and organizations, including Equality Florida. GLAAD has also been working with local, national, and international media outlets on the ground in Orlando to shine light on the disproportionate rates of violence LGBT people face, especially LGBT people of color.

Screen Shot 2016-07-05 at 7.20.42 PM

In the season 2 finale of Go-Go Boy Interrupted, your favorite over-the-hill go-go faces off with his bullies–the mean gays of West Hollywood–in a round of (what else?) gay dodgeball.

Screen Shot 2016-07-05 at 7.22.33 PM 1Danny starts the episode at a low-point: he’s pissed off his mom and was tricked by the aforementioned mean gays (including Scott Evans) into thinking that Keith (Nick Adams) had a crush on him when he actually just wanted to use him as a subject for his dissertation (so sad). But Danny summons his inner strength to square off against his bullies in one last attempt to even the score.

This episode sees the return of Heather Morris (Katie) and Drew Droege (Ann Ziety) along with many other series regulars.

Watch, below.
