경제적 빈곤, 장래의 불안함, 자신만의 공간의 소중함, 준장거리 연애의 난감함, 사회적 압력은 동성애자들만의 주제가 아니다. 마찬가지로 침대에서 상대방의 요구를 존중하고 배려하는 지수의 태도는 이성애자들도 배워 마땅하다고 본다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 〈연애담〉은 이성애 연애 이야기로 전환될 수 있는 영화가 아니다. 〈연애담〉에 대한 열광적인 반응이 터진 것은 이 영화가 오로지 여성 동성애자의 이야기이기 때문에 딱 맞아떨어지는 내용과 디테일을 잔뜩 품고 있기 때문이다.

과거 세대에서 게이 남성이 이성애자 남성으로 보이고 싶어 했다는 건 이해가 된다. 눈에 띄게 퀴어일 경우 폭력의 대상이 될 가능성이 훨씬 커졌을 것이기 때문이다. 현대에 들어 퀴어에 대한 폭력의 위험이 낮아졌다는 말은 물론 아니다. 내가 하고 싶은 말은 게이 남성들은 한때 생존을 위해 이성애자로 보이는 것을 우상화했고, 지금 그런 특성은 커뮤니티 안에서 자기 혐오를 낳을 뿐이고 아무 기능도 하지 못한다는 것이다.
