MAJOR NATIONAL CORPORATE LEADERS INCLUDING APPLE, GOOGLE AND GM OPPOSE KANSAS’ ANTI-LGBTQ LEGISLATION: TechNet — the national, bipartisan network of over 80 technology companies — is urging Kansas lawmakers to oppose HB 2481, warning that the discriminatory legislation could have dire consequences on the state’s economic development and business competitiveness. HB 2481, which is pending in the Kansas legislature, would create a license to discriminate for taxpayer-funded child placement agencies to refuse to place children with LGBTQ foster or adoptive parents, single parents, and other qualified families. IN TODAY’S NEW YORK TIMES — “A GROWING PROBLEM FOR THE MILITARY TRANSGENDER BAN — FACTS”: The hard-hitting editorial lays bare the lies behind the discriminatory Trump-Pence ban on qualified transgender troops in the military, asserting that it simply “panders to right-wing zealots like Vice President Mike Pence and to regressive generals” behind the effort to overturn President Obama’s 2016 decision to protect gender identity in the Pentagon’s equal opportunity policy. The Times notes that federal courts, the heads of the four branches of the military and former surgeons general have asserted there are no facts — military, medical or otherwise — to justify the ban. “In the meantime,” the Times board writes, “a growing body of research and expert opinion supports the only fair and just solution: Repudiating Mr. Trump’s cruel decision and giving transgender people the same right to serve their country in a military uniform as any other citizens.” More from The New York Times.
- Six former surgeons general say “no medially valid reason” for ban: “We underscore that transgender troops are as medically fit as their non-transgender peers and that there is no medically valid reason — including a diagnosis of gender dysphoria — to exclude them from military service or to limit their access to medically necessary care,” they write.
