Today GLAAD announced the nominees for its 29^th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, and 42 of the 125 nominees (and 10 of the 16 nominees in the Spanish-language categories) include outstanding portrayals of transgender people and characters.

Chile’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Film, A Fantastic Woman (Sony Pictures Classics), is nominated for Outstanding Film – Limited Release. This powerful drama is written and directed by Sebastián Lelio and stars Daniela Vega, a Chilean actress who is a transgender woman. A Fantastic Woman tells the story of Marina, her relationship with her partner Orlando, and her vulnerable journey through grief after his sudden and unexpected death.

The Outstanding Drama Series category includes five shows with trans characters. In its second season, Billions (Showtime) introduced Taylor Mason, a non-binary financial analyst, played by Asia Kate Dillion, an actor who is also non-binary. Fox’s Star currently has the only series regular transgender character on broadcast television, played by trans actress Amiyah Scott. Laverne Cox was a series regular on the CBS legal drama Doubt, in which she played a lawyer who also happened to be transgender. Sense8 (Netflix), created by trans siblings Lana and Lilly Wachowski, features a multi-national cast that includes Jamie Clayton, an actress who is also a trans woman. Jen Richards was featured in the fifth season of Nashville, making her the first out trans actress on the CMT network. Transparent (Amazon) received a fourth consecutive nomination in the Outstanding Comedy Series category for its portrayal of a parent transitioning later in life and the trans women she befriends, played by Alexandra Billings and Trace Lysette, who are trans actors.

In the Outstanding Individual Episode category, the CBS series Pure Genius received a nomination for the episode “Grace,” in which trans actress Jazzmun plays a church leader who brings a young man battling a drug-resistant HIV infection to the clinic for treatment.

Dustin Lance Black’s When We Rise (ABC) received a nomination for Outstanding TV Movie or Limited Series for its dramatization of four decades of fighting for LGBTQ equality in San Francisco. Trans actresses Jazzmun, Ivory Aquino, and Alexandra Grey all starred as real-life trans advocates.

In the newly created Outstanding Kids & Family Programming category, “Chosen Family” from the animated series Danger & Eggs (Amazon), created by out trans producer Shadi Petosky, is one of the nominees.

Nominees for the Outstanding Documentary category include: Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric (National Geographic), which take a comprehensive look at trans people; Kiki (Sundance Selects) which focuses on the New York Ball scene; “Real Boy” Independent Lens (PBS) is an intimate look at a young trans man and his relationships with his family and friends; and This is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous (YouTube Red), a engaging film about one of the first trans people to develop a large following on YouTube.

In the Outstanding Reality Program category, Survivor: Game Changers (CBS) received a nomination for a season which featured contestant Zeke Smith being outed as a transgender man during a tribal council. I am Jazz (TLC) received its third nomination, along with the recent season of RuPaul’s Drag Race (VH1) in which contestant Peppermint talked about being a trans woman who is also a drag performer.

Five of the nominees for Outstanding Comic Book feature transgender characters: The Backstagers, written by James Tynion IV (BOOM! Studios); Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love, written by Sarah Vaughn (DC Comics); Lumberjanes, written by Kat Leyh and Shannon Watters (BOOM! Studios); Quantum Teens are Go, written by Magdalene Visaggio, who is also trans, (Black Mask Comics); and The Woods, written by James Tynion IV (BOOM! Studios).

DJ and producer Honey Dijon is a trans woman of color nominated for Outstanding Music Artist for her album, The Best of Both Worlds (Classic Music Company).

The Bold and The Beautiful (CBS) received an Outstanding Daily Drama nomination for its ongoing story about Maya Avant and her husband Rick Forrester. Leading lady Maya disclosed that she is trans in 2015, was married to her boyfriend by out trans actor Scott Turner Schofield, and started a family via surrogacy, all as her traditional parents struggled to embrace her.

The nominees for Outstanding Talk Show Episode put tackled trans equality head-on. The Opposition with Jordan Klepper (Comedy Central) interviewed Danica Roem, the first out transgender person to be elected to a state legislature. Laverne Cox and Gavin Grimm, the transgender student who battled a Virginia School Board for the right to be treated equally in school, were interviewed on The View (ABC). Two shows were nominated for their coverage of the transgender military ban and its impact: “Laila and Logan Ireland, Transgender Military Couple” on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (syndicated), and “Trans Veterans React to Ban” The Daily Show with Trevor Noah (Comedy Central).

VICE on HBO (HBO) received a nomination for Outstanding TV Journalism – Newsmagazine for its segment “Trans Youth,” which focused on how to support trans youth with competent healthcare. For the Outstanding TV Journalism Segment category, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt (NBC) and CBS Evening News (CBS) both covered the violence affecting transgender women of color, while “Transgender Rights under Fire in Trump Era” on AM Joy (MSNBC) also received a nod for its coverage of trans issues.

Trans stories were featured in print and online journalism as well. Nominees for Outstanding Magazine Article include: “Beyond ‘He’ or ‘She’: The Changing Meaning of Gender and Sexuality” by Katy Steinmetz (Time), “Free Radical” by Nathan Heller (Vogue), and “Trans, Teen, and Homeless” by Laura Rena Murray (Rolling Stone). The nominee for Outstanding Newspaper Article include “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: The Journey of a Transgender Man” by Lauren McGaughy (The Dallas Morning News) which tells the story of Trenton Johnson, a 34-year-old Black transgender man living in Dallas and the impact on his life of proposed anti-trans legislation in the Texas.

Two stories about trans people, “‘I Am a Girl Now,’ Sage Smith Wrote. Then She Went Missing.” by Emma Eisenberg (Splinter), and “Meet the Transgender Student Who Fought Discrimination at His Maryland High School (and Won)” by Nico Lang (INTO) are nominated for Outstanding Digital Journalism Article. And three of the nominees for Outstanding Digital Journalism – Multimedia are about trans people and issues: “Made to Model: Trans Beauty in Fashion” (LogoTV.com), “‘This Is How We Win’: Inside Danica Roem’s Historic Victory” by Diana Tourjée (Broadly.Vice.com), and “Transgender Day of Remembrance” by Saeed Jones (AM to DM, BuzzFeed News). Respected trans advocate Monica Roberts received her third nomination for Outstanding Blog for her work on Transgriot, which focuses on issues pertaining to transgender women of color.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community and the issues that affect their lives. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD’s work to amplify stories from the LGBTQ community and issues that build support for equality and acceptance.
