This Incredible Cascading Library Is Every Book-Lover’s Dream
Book worms, ready yourselves for next level awesomeness: the most beautiful library has opened in China which can house up to 1.2 million books.

The Tianjin Binhai library’s design is inspired by an auditorium. The 33,700 m² space uses cascading bookshelves to create stairs, seating and the layered ceiling – all of which are filled to the brim with books.

Among all of that, there’s a luminous spherical auditorium which can be programmed to create different lighting atmospheres. Cool or what?

The library was designed by architects MVRDV. On their site, it reads: “The library, one part of a larger cultural complex masterplan, bases itself around a spherical auditorium which, coupled with the main atrium, forms an eye that acts as a focal point for the interior space.

“Terraced bookshelves echo the sphere throughout the atrium, leading users up into the heart of the library, before continuing around the building as louvers.”

We’ll leave you to get to know one another…

Tommy Robinson’s Twitter Loses Verified Status And Blue Tick

Tommy Robinson’s Twitter Loses Verified Status And Blue Tick

Tommy Robinson has been stripped of his verified status on Twitter after the social media platform took aim at a number of controversial individuals it deemed had breeched its new guidelines.

Users can now have their coveted blue ticks taken away for a number of offences including “promoting hate”, “harassment” and posting “gruesome, shocking and disturbing imagery”.

Twitter also says behaviour “on or off Twitter” can lead to a loss of verified status.

Others to lose their blue ticks include white supremacist, Richard Spencer, alt-right Mormon ‘Wife with a Purpose’ and alt-right commentator Laura Loomer.

Twitter just this very second, deleted my verified account status!

— Wife with a Purpose (@apurposefulwife) November 15, 2017

Twitter just emailed me to tell me they are removing my “verified badge” because they claim my account “doesn’t comply with Twitter’s guidelines for verified accounts.”

Translation: I’m a conservative. pic.twitter.com/F1AsxWI6Fm

Verified no more! Is it not okay to be proudly White? ??‍♂️

— Richard Spencer (@RichardBSpencer) November 15, 2017

The ex-EDL leader and outspoken critic of Islam told HuffPost UK the move was a “blatant attack on free speech”.

He added: “I’ve breached none of their guidelines. If they are saying that I promote hate then we have laws against that in the UK so the police would have arrested me.

Asked if he would take action against the move, he said: “I don’t need to – by doing this the public become aware of the attempts to silence me thus giving me more support.”

Whilst many of those supporters agreed with him others were less sympathetic.

Is there anything more snowflakey than crying about a lost blue tick?

— James O’Brien (@mrjamesob) November 16, 2017

Losing your blue tick is not a free speech issue you bunch of babies

— Olivia Solon (@oliviasolon) November 16, 2017

I would never normally encourage viewing the accounts of evil fuckwits like Spencer, Loomer, etc, but their pissbaby whines about losing a blue tick on a website are truly a delight.

— David Lewis (@davidclewis) November 16, 2017

But others suggested the move puts Twitter in a “tricky place” and that it could be seen as an endorsement of some views over others.

By removing verification from accounts that don’t meet new guidelines, @Twitter has now put itself in a tricky place where the implication is that a blue tick *does* equal endorsement

— Claire Phipps (@Claire_Phipps) November 16, 2017

Twitter are doing the blue tick thing wrong. Make it available to anyone who wants to confirm identity or get rid of it. Removing it from Nazis means it IS a privilege.

— Rob Manuel (@robmanuel) November 16, 2017

I don’t agree with much of what Baked Alaska says, but why was he banned @Twitter@jack? Why is twitter de-verifying conservative voices? Why was @apurposefulwife‘s blue tick removed??? Why won’t they reveal reasons behind bans? Why don’t Twitter believe in 1st Amendment rights??

— Michael Black (@MichaelBlack777) November 16, 2017

Last week, Twitter attempted to clarify that the check mark was just meant to authenticate identity and voice while adding they were temporarily pausing general verifications.

Verification was meant to authenticate identity & voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance. We recognize that we have created this confusion and need to resolve it. We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon

The full list of reasons people can lose their blue ticks is as follows:

  • Intentionally misleading people on Twitter by changing one’s display name or bio.
  • Promoting hate and/or violence against, or directly attacking or threatening other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease. Supporting organizations or individuals that promote the above.
  • Inciting or engaging in harassment of others.
  • Violence and dangerous behavior.
  • Directly or indirectly threatening or encouraging any form of physical violence against an individual or any group of people, including threatening or promoting terrorism.
  • Violent, gruesome, shocking, or disturbing imagery.
  • Self-harm, suicide.
  • Engaging in activity on Twitter that violates the Twitter Rules.

Gay Couple Allege Bus Driver Made ‘Limp Wrist’ Gestures, Slammed Door In Their Faces

Gay Couple Allege Bus Driver Made ‘Limp Wrist’ Gestures, Slammed Door In Their Faces

A bus company in Manchester, England has launched an investigation after a gay couple alleged a driver subjected them to homophobic taunts.

John Mullarkey and Steven Crosbie say a First Manchester driver made an offensive “limp wrist” after they disembarked a bus on Monday.

The Manchester Evening News reports:

The couple say the driver had first seen them holding hands before the journey, as they queued at Shudehill Station, and closed the door in their faces as they went to get on board.

John and Steven ran up to the next bus stop, where they were able to board the same service, but say the same driver was then ‘abrupt and arrogant’ towards them.

It was shortly after, when they were getting off the bus in Heywood, that they say the driver made the offensive hand gestures.

Crosbie explained:

“He was thanking the customers in front of us, but he was just very abrupt and arrogant with us.

“He just looked away. I wouldn’t even call him a bus driver. I’ve never experienced anything like it before on public transport.

“As he drove away he was also shouting something at us, but as the windows were closed we couldn’t hear what it was.

“I was bullied for five years in school for being gay, but it’s 2017 and it shouldn’t still be happening.

“It’s not the first time this kind of thing has happened since I left school, but it is the first time it’s happened on public transport, that’s what shocked me the most. It was the worst experience of my life.”

“It was just disgusting,” added Mullarkey. “I only came out in 2016 and this was my first horrible experience, and from it to come from a bus driver, it didn’t feel nice.”

A First Manchester spokesperson confirmed the company is conducting a full investigation.

MPs Warn ‘Urgent’ Action Needed To Stop Customs Chaos In Event Of ‘No Deal’ Brexit

MPs Warn ‘Urgent’ Action Needed To Stop Customs Chaos In Event Of ‘No Deal’ Brexit
There must be an “urgent acceleration” in the contingency planning for a no deal Brexit if the UK is to avoid chaos at its borders, the government has been warned.

In a report published on Thursday, the influential Commons Home Affairs Committee told ministers to reveal early in the New Year how Britain will handle customs checks if trade talks with the EU collapse.

The MPs also warned it would be “extremely damaging”, including to national security, if any agreement on a Brexit transition deal was delayed beyond the first quarter of 2018.

It comes as the government admitted it would no longer try to build a 3,600-capacity lorry park holding park near Dover to deal with potential tailbacks.

Yvette Cooper, the Labour chair of the committee, said the government’s border planning for Brexit was “extremely unconvincing”.

Under the government’s Brexit plan, the UK will leave the EU customs union – the arrangement that allows goods to flow freely between Britain and the EU with very few checks.

Theresa May has said she wants to see “the freest and most frictionless trade possible in goods between the UK and the EU” after Brexit.

But the EU has dismissed the idea that a non-member state country can have frictionless trade.

The European Parliament’s Brexit spokesman, Guy Verhofstadt, has said it would be “a fantasy”.

It raises the prospect of long queues at Dover as goods vehicles are forced to wait to be cleared by customs officials before being allowed to travel to the continent.

In a separate report on Tuesday, the Commons Public Accounts Committee warned the failure to implement a new customs system by the end of March 2019 would result in “massive queues at Dover” and “food being left to rot in trucks at the border”.

In its report, the home affairs committee said if no deal is reached on customs arrangements it risked “either significant delays at ports of entry, or of inadequate checks taking place”.

“A major contingency plan is therefore needed for the border which sets out the volume and nature of checks that the Government would expect to operate in the event of no deal,” the report said.

“It should include plans for extra staff, additional infrastructure and new processes for businesses, and set out the costs of these plans.

“The long lead times that these changes require mean that, even if negotiations on a transitional arrangement continue throughout next year, the country cannot afford ‘no deal’ arrangements to be left until the last minute.

“Therefore, Ministers need to set out early in the New Year the timetable they will follow for decisions, including when extra staff will start to be recruited and trained on a contingency basis, and what the costs and funding arrangements will be.

“The Government will also need to provide detail to businesses on the checks they can expect on goods at the border in the event of no deal, so that they can put in place their own contingency arrangements.”

Cooper said: “There must also be an urgent acceleration of contingency planning in case there is no deal at all.

“We found the 4% increase in Border Force staff at the borders completely unconvincing.

“The Government must not allow bad policy decisions or poor contingency planning to mean that Border Force staff are pulled away from security, illegal goods and immigration checks to cover for customs chaos. Ministers must not allow Brexit implementation put our security at risk.”

In 2016, the value of goods traded between the UK and the EU was £382bn, compared with £393bn traded with the rest of the world.

About four million goods vehicles cross the Channel each year, with 2.5 million passing through the port of Dover alone in 2015.
