When will it end?: Documenting the U.S. epidemic of anti-trans hate violence in 2017

It has been another deadly year for trans people, with at least 23 reported homicides in the first ten months of 2017. This is sadly unsurprising in a year that began with the election of a man to the White House who has appointed anti-LGBTQ  individuals to his administration and has been littered with more discussions of transphobic legislation in state legislatures than any year in recent past. The appointment of anti-LGBTQ activists to White House positions merely serves to further validate and normalize anti-transgender attitudes among the general public. Recently, Trump became the first sitting president to speak at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter summit, a meeting of various groups united by negative opinions of and discriminatory actions against LGBTQ people. This comes just a few months after an official White House webpage posted a link directing readers to a Heritage Foundation article that referred to being transgender as a “psychological disorder.” For more information on Trump’s anti-LGBTQ aggressions, see Donald Trump: Trump Accountability Project.

Some of the most alarming statistics about this year’s transgender victims are as follows:

  • Of the 23 transgender people killed in 2017, 20 of them (87%) were transgender women
  • A staggering 95% of the transgender women killed were also women of color
  • In 2017, 74% of the murders of trans people were committed in states whose majority voted red in the 2016 presidential election
  • 65% of this year’s victims were part of the millennial generation

A breakdown of the data of this year’s victims yields many of the same trends as data from years past. The most notable trend is the alarmingly disproportionate rate at which transgender women are killed in relation to other transgender people. Of the 23 transgender people killed in 2017, 20 of them (87%) were transgender women. As both transgender people and women, they face at least two intersecting forms of oppression – sexism and transphobia – and the astonishingly high murder rates reflect this. Consistent with data from years past, a horrifying 95% of the transgender women killed were also women of color. In addition to the two forms of oppression faced by white transgender women, transgender women of color also face the effects of racism, putting them at higher risk for poverty, discrimination, and violence.

With political tensions continuing to build, it is unsurprising that the contrast of anti-trans crime rate is so stark between states that voted red in the 2016 presidential election and states that voted blue. In 2017, 17 (74%) known cases of anti-trans violence were committed in red states. Eight (47%) of these murders occurred in states that either attempted or successfully passed anti-trans legislation during the 2017 calendar year. During the time that a state’s legislature debates these anti-trans bills, transphobic voices routinely appear in media, which may contribute to an increase in anti-trans sentiment in that state.

Perhaps due in part to the fact that there are more out transgender people in the millennial generation than in older generations, a breakdown of data by age reveals that 15 (65%) of the victims were millennials. This is a significantly higher percentage of victims than the three other generations combined, with four (18%) of the victims in Generation X, three (13%) of the victims in Generation Z, and only one (4%) of the victims in the baby boomer generation.

As is common in cases of anti-trans violence, at least 19 of those who were killed in 2017 were either misgendered, dead named, or both in initial media accounts of their deaths. Even when faced with a number of gender cues suggesting that the victim may not live as the sex they were assigned at birth, many law enforcement officials opt to report an individual’s birth sex and birth name instead of exerting effort to ensure that they correctly identify the victim. It is often only after being corrected by a victim’s family, friends, local LGBTQ organizations, or GLAAD, that some journalists agree to amend their stories. Additionally, charges have been filed in less than half of this year’s cases, which suggests that law enforcement may not take the murders of transgender individuals seriously. Misgendering and dead naming by law enforcement often leads to similar actions by reporters, which results in misinformation in media. It is crucial that reporters be educated in regards to sensitive reporting on transgender victims of crime. For tips on how to do this, please see GLAAD’s Tip Sheet: Doubly Victimized: Reporting on Transgender Victims of Crime.

It continues to be important that we, as a community, remain vigilant in combatting transphobia in any way that we can. In the face of such continually heartbreaking statistics on acts of anti-trans violence, it may seem difficult to remain hopeful that there is a brighter future in store for the transgender community – but there is.

On Trans Day of Remembrance, let’s honor the transgender people who were so tragically taken from us this year, not just by speaking about their deaths, but by doing our part to strive towards equality and respect for the transgender community as a whole.

Who Is Shappi Khorsandi? I’m A Celebrity’s Comedian Is Going To Have The Camp In Sitches

Who Is Shappi Khorsandi? I’m A Celebrity’s Comedian Is Going To Have The Camp In Sitches
Among the usual mix of soap stars, former footballers and popstars from yesteryear on the ‘I’m A Celebrity’ line-up is one contestant we reckon everyone should be excited about.

Comedian Shappi Khorsandi looks set to inject some much needed humour into this year’s jungle, and if her stand up is anything to go by, she’s going to be a hoot.

Ahead of her debut on the ITV reality show, get to know here a little better with her 9 Facts In 90 Seconds…

Shappi was born in Tehran in 1973, but left Iran as a child, after her family were forced to flee the country due to a satirical poem her father published which was seen as critical of the Islamic Revolution.

2. She is from a funny family

Both her brother (Peyvand Khorsandi) and father (Hadi Khorsandi) are also also in comedy, and she says humour is such an important part of their family.

She told the Guardian in 2015: “Being witty is seen as an important quality. No matter what terrible trouble we were in as children, if we were able to make our parents laugh it would redeem us.

“Even the assassination attempt was a huge laugh in our family.

“My dad would talk about the fact that they wanted him dead in a way that would make you howl. He bought us all Ayatollah Khomeini Spitting Image masks and he used to dress up as the Ayatollah in robes and makes us giggle.”

3. Her comedy plays on the British-Iranian cultural divide and generation gap

Having begun her stand-up career in 1997, she has worked her way up from small gigs, to the likes of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’ and ‘Live At The Apollo’, where audiences lapped up her take on life as a British-Iranian.

If you’re a fan of ‘QI’, ‘Have I Got News For You’ or Radio 4′s ‘The News Quiz’, chances are you’ve probably seen Shappi on the panel, providing her trademark dry and observational humour.

5. She identifies as bisexual

Shappi recently revealed she is attracted to both genders in an interview with John Bishop about the lead character in her book, ‘Nina Is Not OK’, which is based on her own experiences.

“I think it’s a lot easier to come out as bisexual now but when I was her age, straight friends of mine, it would jolt them, even those that weed on gay pride parades. ’Oh, are you bisexual are you going to fancy me now?′ So you sort of go back in the closet. And don’t mention it again for another decade,” she explained.

“I don’t think I’ve mentioned it in publicly until now.”

6. She is president of the British Humanist Association

Identifying as an atheist and humanist, Shappi became president of the British Humanist Association in 2016, working with the charity to represent “people who seek to live good lives without religious or superstitious beliefs”.

7. She is a mum of two and is going to miss her kids terribly in the jungle

Shappi has a son, Cassius, with ex-husband comedian Christian Reilly, as well as a four-year-old daughter, Genevieve, from a previous relationship.

Of leaving them behind to do the show, she says: “It’s going to be the longest time I’ve been apart from my children and that is frightening but I hope other people will be kind when you are having your wobble.”

8. It was her friend Joel Dommett who inspired her to do the show

Last year’s runner up and new ‘Extra Camp’ host Joel was Shappi’s inspiration for signing up for ‘I’m A Celebrity’, having known him from the comedy circuit.

“I just felt that it was a good time for me to do something like this,” she says. “It’s something a bit challenging and really out of my comfort zone. I didn’t talk to Joel about it beforehand as it’s been a big secret but I am feeling both excited and terrified about the prospect.”

9. She’s might not get on with Stanley Johnson

The pair look set for a tense first meeting on ‘I’m A Celebrity’, after Shappi slammed his son Boris Johnson over British citizen Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s detention in Iran, just days before joining the show.

Taking to Twitter, Shappi criticised the Foreign Secretary for talking “damaging bollocks”, when he claimed Nazanin had been teaching journalism in Iran before she was detained – a comment which he has since admitted was incorrect.

‘I’m A Celebrity’ launches on Sunday at 9pm on ITV.

Sneak peek: On set with the trans stars of Ryan Murphy’s highly anticipated “Pose”

Sneak peek: On set with the trans stars of Ryan Murphy’s highly anticipated “Pose”

Last month, there was tremendous buzz and excitement when FX announced that Ryan Murphy’s pilot for Pose had the largest transgender cast ever for a scripted series – five transgender women of color playing five series regular roles.

In celebration of Trans Awareness Week, EW today shared the first photo of these talented actors – in character – direct from the set where filming is taking place.

MJ Rodriguez (Blanca) is a theater and film actress who has appeared on Nurse Jackie, The Carrie Diaries, and Luke Cage, and was recently featured with Indya Moore (Angel) in Saturday Church at the Tribeca Film Festival. Dominique Jackson (Elektra) is a fashion model and icon in the current New York ball scene, who also appeared in Oxygen’s Strut. Hailie Sahar (Lulu) has been seen on Mr. Robot. And Angelica Ross (Candy) was the star of the Emmy-nominated web series Her Story and recently appeared on several episodes of Claws.

This cast represents an historic moment in authentic trans representation in Hollywood. But transgender people aren’t only in front of the camera. Pose also includes talented trans people behind the scenes helping to craft the stories these talented actors are portraying. Co-executive producer Silas Howard is a transgender man and an accomplished writer, director, and producer. Our Lady J, a trans woman and a writer on Amazon’s Transparent, is also a producer and in the writer’s room, alongside New York Times bestselling author and trans advocate Janet Mock. Leiomy Maldando, a trans woman and a legend in the New York ballroom scene, is the choreographer for the show along with Danielle Polanco.

When the casting news broke, GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis said:

“Hollywood has a long history of misrepresenting LGBTQ people of color, especially transgender women, and Pose is primed to change that by showing audiences and the industry that trans stories are powerful, relatable, and entertaining. With Ryan Murphy’s smart decision to cast talented trans actors like Angelica Ross in front of the camera, and gifted trans storytellers like Silas Howard and Janet Mock behind the camera and in the writer’s room, the show is poised to bring trans inclusion and understanding to the next level.”

GLAAD’s recent Where We Are on TV report counted 17 transgender characters across broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms during the reporting period. However, two shows with transgender characters have since been cancelled leaving only 15 current transgender characters on TV.

Pose is set in Manhattan in the 1980s, and delves into a variety of cultures including the famous New York ball scene. These talented trans people will be joined on screen by Billy Porter, Evan Peters, Tatiana Maslany, James Van Der Beek, Kate Mara, and many stars who GLAAD has worked with in the past.

Pose show creator Ryan Murphy received his first GLAAD Media Award at the 11th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles in 2000 for his show Popular. Murphy also was honored in 2010 for Glee, in 2013 for The New Normal and American Horror Story: Asylum, and in 2015 for bringing a beautiful version of The Normal Heart to HBO.

“Pose” star Angelica Ross called for more trans visibility earlier this year when receiving a GLAAD Media Award with Trevor Noah for her appearance on The Daily Show.

Jared Kushner Failed to Disclose Wikileaks Emails, Details About Russian Contacts to Senate Investigators

Jared Kushner Failed to Disclose Wikileaks Emails, Details About Russian Contacts to Senate Investigators

Jared Kushner has held information back from the Senate Judiciary Committee concerning Wikileaks and Russian invitations and Senators Chuck Grassley and Dianne Feinstein are demanding it, the Washington Post reports:

In the letter, Grassley and Feinstein instruct Kushner’s team to turn over “several documents that are known to exist” because other witnesses in their probe already gave them to investigators. They include a series of “September 2016 email communications to Mr. Kushner concerning WikiLeaks,” which the committee leaders say Kushner then forwarded to another campaign official. Earlier this week, Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. revealed that he had had direct communication with WikiLeaks over private Twitter messages during the campaign.

Committee leaders said Kushner also withheld from the committee “documents concerning a ‘Russian backdoor overture and dinner invite’ ” that he had forwarded to other campaign officials. And they said Kushner had been made privy to “communications with Sergei Millian” — a Belarusan American businessman who claims close ties to the Trumps and was the source of salacious details in a dossier about the president’s 2013 trip to Moscow — but failed to turn those records over to investigators.

Last month it was reported that “Kushner ‘enriched himself’ by not revealing his ownership of a real estate tech business that raised millions of dollars while he served in the government.”

Scottish Labour Leader Election Ends With Leftwinger Richard Leonard Playing Down Chances Of Victory

Scottish Labour Leader Election Ends With Leftwinger Richard Leonard Playing Down Chances Of Victory
The fractious Scottish Labour leadership election has ended with leftwinger Richard Leonard’s campaign playing down his chances of pulling off a victory.

The poll closed at noon on Friday, with results due to be revealed on Saturday, after weeks of sometimes acrimonious spats between supporters of Leonard and those of rival Anas Sarwar.

At stake is not just the leadership of the party in Scotland, vacated by Kezia Dugdale this summer, but also a crucial seat on Labour’s ruling National Executive Committee (NEC).

During the race, Glasgow MSP Sarwar, seen as the more ‘centrist’ candidate, won the backing of big names such as current interim leader Jackie Baillie, Manchester and Liverpool Metro Mayors Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram and a swath of new party members.

Leonard, depicted as the more “pro-Corbyn” contender, won huge trade union backing and managed to sign up record numbers of union members to take part in the ballot.

But in an internal briefing note seen by HuffPost UK, Leonard’s campaign manager Simon Fletcher struck a decidedly downbeat note as he warned his lower profile and lower turnout among trade unionists had ensured the race was too close to call.

Fletcher also pointed out that the party membership was historically less radical in Scotland, having preferred Owen Smith to Corbyn in 2016.

Other insiders pointed out that the all-electronic ballot, the first of its kind, had deterred older members who were more used to putting a paper postal vote.

The “close of poll note” reads:

“We are not going to predict the outcome. From the outset we have not briefed our numbers or offered a prediction. We believe we have done everything possible in this campaign. Contrary to the presentation of Richard as the frontrunner, we have always believed that this is a massive stretch for a relatively less well-known candidate to deliver victory for a message of change. In the most recent leadership election in Scotland last summer, Owen Smith secured 53.2 per cent to Jeremy Corbyn’s 46.8 per cent amongst the members. In the 2014 leadership election Neil Findlay – who is supporting Richard Leonard in this election – secured 32.7 per cent of the membership compared to 60.4 per cent to Jim Murphy. Anas Sarwar began the campaign with a much higher-profile than Richard Leonard, and indeed is the former deputy leader of the Scottish Labour Party. To get to a point of being a serious challenger for the Scottish Labour leadership is a major achievement and marks a significant development in the political and policy direction of the Scottish Labour Party. In terms of the voting. –           Richard has a considerable amount of support amongst members who joined before, during and after the 2017 General Election; notably amongst the very many young people who are again joining the Labour Party. He has also shown that he can reach into previously existing members who are hungry for change in order to deliver electoral advance and connect with Labour’s political development at a UK level. This was reflected in the constituency party nominations. –           We believe that Anas has a strong showing amongst members who joined since the contest started. –           We know that affiliated supporters often have a lower turnout than members. So the question could well come down to the balance between the different degrees of turnout. Richard’s candidacy has shifted the terms of the framework in Scottish Labour, leading the whole debate in a more radical direction. The result remains to be seen, and we make no predictions.
During the race, Sarwar came under attack for his family firm’s employment practices and faced questions over a large influx of new party members signed up. He also faced criticism for sending his son to the private school.

The Leonard campaign also had to fend off claims that it had broken rules in signing up thousands of trade unionists to take part in the election.

In a statement, Sarwar paid tribute to the members and trade unionists who had voted for him or volunteered on his campaign.

“I am immensely proud of leading a positive campaign, which put forward new, radical, bold policy ideas, and never forgot who our real opponents are: the SNP and the Tories.

“Our campaign to put Labour values at the heart of Scotland’s future galvanised and motivated thousands who want our party to fight harder against a Tory Brexit, be bolder in our ambition to lift children out of poverty, and be more radical with tax powers.

“If elected leader, I will work tirelessly to return us to power so that Scotland has a government that works for the many, not the few.”

Leonard said in a separate statement that his campaign had “shifted the debate in Scottish Labour for good”.

“Now is the time for the party to come together to take the fight to the SNP and the Tories, for all of those people in all of those communities who need Labour back in power.”
