Change The Record This Budget Day

Today is Budget Day, and as the Chancellor addresses Parliament and holds his red case aloft for the journalists, I’m left asking why we still live in a world where we consistently fail to make the economy deliver on what people really want and need.

A brief glance at the official budget hashtags (#AutumnBudget #Budget2017) reveals a long list of demands; to make the tax system fairer and stop tax dodgers, to give more help to small business, to reform universal credit, and to invest in education and the NHS before it’s too late. This is a time where people from all walks of life have their opportunity to speak out about how we raise taxes, and what we spend public money on.

At the same time, there is a clear story from the economic establishment. It’s a story we have all heard before. That we have to tighten our belts, and make tough choices. That GDP growth and reduction of the deficit is the top priority, because it makes everything else possible and because money trickles down to everyone.

But we only have to look around us to know that something isn’t working. Our economic system is creating winners and losers at a scale that is difficult to justify. The richest 1% in the world have more wealth than the rest of humanity, and in our country economic inequality has spiked to Victorian levels. Between April and September more than half a million people turned to food banks because they lacked the money to put food on the table or to buy basic toiletries and sanitary products. I doubt most people can get through the food bank scene in the film I, Daniel Blake without a tear. And yet in the fifth richest country in the world, for many people this is reality. Just another day.

As co-founder of Happy City, I’ve spent the last seven years talking to people – from prisoners to pensioners, and campaigners to councillors – about what really matters to them, and it’s abundantly clear that the way the economy currently works is out of step with how people want the world to be. Back in 2014, a YouGov poll commissioned by our friends at Action for Happiness found that 87% of people would prefer to see action to increase happiness and wellbeing, than action to increase overall wealth. And the desire for a fairer and more sustainable society holds up among those who spend their days in the cut and thrust of finance and investment. Just last week, Triodos bank’s Impact Investing survey revealed that 79% of investors want to see a fairer and more sustainable society. In fact, as George Monbiot found in researching his latest book, the evidence across psychology, anthropology, neuroscience and evolutionary biology tells a consistent story. It’s hardwired into human beings to care about the needs of others.

So given the ‘economic system’ doesn’t have a mind of its own – it’s created by us, by people – and given people are essentially altruistic, even those supposedly obsessed by profit, is there really no alternative?

More and more ordinary people are sitting up and asking this question. From the waves of protest around the world sparked by the economic crisis, to the recent Paradise Papers that helped pulled back the veil of secrecy from tax havens and financial trickery, the reality behind the ‘growth at all costs’ narrative is being exposed. And people are finding alternatives. Positive Money are working with some of the leading economists, academics, and policy-makers to bring about a fairer money and banking system. Local not-for-profit energy companies like Robin Hood Energy are proving there is an alternative to the ‘big six.’ The New Economics Foundation are putting forward practical ideas, such as an ethical alternative to Uber, Cab Fair.  And we at Happy City have developed alternatives to GDP so that government, businesses and communities can measure real progress.

So although we remain a long way from the real revolution in spending and thinking that is needed to make the economy serve us better and deliver real prosperity, there is hope. And Budget Day is one of many opportunities to spark a healthy debate about, as the economist Kate Raworth puts it, ‘moving from an economy that grows whether or not we thrive, to one where we thrive whether or not it grows”.

Chrissy Teigen Pregnant With Second Child With John Legend, Gets Daughter To Announce News In Sweetest Way

Chrissy Teigen is expecting her second child with her husband John Legend.

The 31-year-old mum got her 18-month-old daughter Luna to announce the pregnancy news in a sweet Instagram video on Tuesday 21 November.

The clip showed Teigen pointing to her belly and asking her daughter: “What’s in here?”

Luna replied to the camera: “Baby!” 

Teigen comically captioned the video: “It’s John’s!”

The baby news may not come as much of a surprise to fans, as the model announced back in October 2017 that she and Legend were soon going to try for a second child.

The couple conceived their first child via IVF and Teigen gave birth to Luna in April 2016.

She revealed on Twitter in January 2017 that she had one frozen embryo left, and that their second child would be a boy.

The couple caused controversy in February 2016 when Teigen revealed she selected the gender of her first child.

“I’ve made this decision,” Teigen told People magazine at the time.

“Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.’” 

When announcing her first pregnancy in October 2015, Teigen said she had been trying for a baby for a while.

“It hasn’t been easy,” she wrote on Instagram at the time.

“But we kept trying because we can’t wait to bring our first child into the world and grow our family. We’re so excited that it’s finally happening.”

Gay Drama ‘Call Me By Your Name’ Leads Independent Spirit Award Nominations: FULL LIST

The gay drama Call Me By Your Name starring Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet leads this year’s Independent Spirit Award nominations with six including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Male Lead (for Timothee Chalamet), and Best Supporting Male (for Armie Hammer).

Also nominated, the French AIDS/ACT UP drama BPM (Beats Per Minute) for Best International Film (watch a clip HERE), along with A Fantastic Woman from Chile, in which trans actress Daniela Vega plays a transgender singer faced with discrimination and loss when her lover dies.

Toothpaste Ad Featuring ‘Naked’ Model Banned For ‘Objectifying Women’
A toothpaste ad has been banned for its inclusion of a naked woman after members of the public complained that it “objectified women”.

The ad, for BOCA organic toothpaste, appeared in a supplement magazine that came with The Times newspaper in July and featured a woman who appeared to be wearing only a pair of heels.

In response to complaints, BOCA denied that the woman in the ad was naked, stating there is a fine line “between sexual objectification and the expression of sensuality”.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banned the ad from appearing again in its current form, ruling it “objectified women” and stating it was “likely to cause serious or widespread offence”. 

The ASA received two complaints about the ad, which appeared in The Time’s Raconteur supplement on July 28 2017.

A spokesperson from Croftscope Ltd, which owns BOCA, told ASA they belived the ad reflected the “sensual and organic nature of their product”.

“BOCA also stated their target audience was predominantly female, with an aspirational lifestyle characterised by luxury and self-indulgence,” the ASA ruling states.

“They also stated that their products uniquely featured day and overnight formulations, and the latter promoted relaxation prior to retiring. They said the image demonstrated the model in a relaxed pose that was commensurate with the product.”

A spokesperson from Raconteur Media Ltd, who oversee the supplement mag, also stated they “did not believe that the image of the woman in the ad was overtly sexual” as she was “mostly obscured by the chair in the image, with only one leg being visible”. (HuffPost UK notes there are two legs…)

They added they did not believe that the image objectified women as the ad was “demure in its setting”.

Despite these protestations, ASA still ruled the ad was “sexually provocative”, stating although the model’s upper torso (including her nipples) were out of shot, the implication was that she was nude.

“Furthermore, because the model’s face was not shown, we considered that the visible parts of her torso, including her lower portion of her breasts, and the lower half of her body became the visual emphasis of the ad, which was likely to draw readers’ attention,” the ruling said.

“We also considered that the nudity and the pose of the model, and the provocative nature of the ad, bore no relevance to the product.”

EU Withdrawal Bill: Tory Rebels Behave Like ‘Grand Old Duke Of York’ After Last Minute Climbdown
Tory Remainer rebels were compared to the “Grand Old Duke of York” after backing down from an EU Withdrawal Bill revolt on human rights at the very last minute.

Conservative MPs led by Dominic Grieve were preparing to join forces with their opponents to inflict defeat on the Government’s Brexit legislation over its potential impact on human rights.

Grieve had tabled an amendment calling for the full protection of the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights in post-Brexit domestic law, but withdrew it at the final hour and refused to back a similar motion by Labour.

Fellow would-be rebels Anna Soubry and Nicky Morgan were among 15 expected to defy the Government, but the sole Tory to step out of line was arch-europhile Ken Clarke.

It is understood ministers will work with Grieve to make changes to the Bill at a later change, but SNP said the Tory rebels have capitulated for “precious little”.

SNP MP Joanna Cherry said: “The process of leaving the European Union is already extremely complex and unpredictable, and the removal of the charter of fundamental rights simply risks creating an additional level of legal uncertainty and instability. So why do it? Why not reconsider?

“Just like the Grand Old Duke of York, the much-lauded Rebel Tories have marched their troops up to the top of the hill and then down again after precious little by way of concession.”

Britain is currently a member of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, which covers many civil, political and social rights for EU and UK citizens.

Until the UK formally leaves the European Union, EU law applies in the UK either directly in some instances, or when it is written into UK law, such as when an Act of Parliament is passed to apply an EU directive.

 But its jurisdiction will no longer apply after the country leaves the EU in March 2019 and the EU Withdrawal Bill in its current form states: “The charter of fundamental rights is not part of domestic law on or after exit day.”

Cherry added: “The UK government must listen to the overwhelming legal advice which has warned against failing to incorporate the Charter with the rest of retained EU law, and warned that the repeated reluctance of successive UK governments to fully incorporate UN human rights treaties, such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into domestic law, show that the UK government cannot be trusted to protect citizens’ rights.

“The UK government must not resort to a race to the bottom by abandoning rights that have played a central role in our day to day lives.”

Liberal Democrat Brexit Spokesperson Tom Brake added: “The Government squeaked home, but we will not give up the fight to protect fundamental rights from an extreme Brexit.

“Ministers won’t be permitted to weaken vital protections to appease their own Brexiteer backbenchers and ram through a Tory Brexit.

“The vast majority of people do not want to see a Brexit that undermines our freedoms, equality and privacy.”
