Mocked By Cameron For His Suit, Now Jeremy Corbyn’s A GQ Cover Star
David Cameron once chastised him for dressing so shabbily the then Prime Minister’s mother would order him to “put on a proper suit [and] do up his tie”.

But now, wearing a perfectly-fitted Marks and Spencer two-piece with a bold, brilliantly red tie, Jeremy Corbyn’s a GQ cover star.

It’s a transformation befitting the tumult unleashed upon British politics since Cameron mocked his opponent during PMQs in February 2016.

At the time, the topic of controversy was whether or not Corbyn had sung the national anthem with appropriate gusto.

Little wonder then that January’s cover, previewed on Thursday ahead of its general release, is seen by many as symbolic of just how much things have changed.

Not going to lie, thoroughly enjoying the parallel universe we’ve ended up in pic.twitter.com/sKWswFCQf7
I met Jeremy Corbyn twice before it was cool, and never did I imagine him as the sort of bloke who’d end up on the front of GQ ? There’s hope for us all. t.co/HmqEIfdgn8

Clever from Corbyn to appear in GQ, but wearing an M&S suit. Photo also shows how much smarter Corbyn looks now than in 2015 t.co/Dj41QqvbZg
tfw you put on a proper suit, do up your tie and sing the national anthem t.co/JigUI7nZrd
And, of course, not everyone was impressed with Corbyn’s apparent transformation. Some went as far as claiming a skilful hand was at play.

The January/February 2018 issue of British GQ is released on Monday 4 December.

Rex Tillerson moron

REX TILLERSON. Trump planning replacement of Tillerson with Mike Pompeo within weeks: “Mr. Pompeo would be replaced at the C.I.A. by Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas who has been a key ally of the president on national security matters, according to the White House plan. Mr. Cotton has signaled that he would accept the job if offered, said the officials, who insisted on anonymity to discuss sensitive deliberations before decisions are announced.”

PROCESSING IT. Ann Curry does not want to be asked about Matt Lauer right now.

LUPE VALDEZ. Gay Dallas Sheriff considering run for governor.

TRUMP TAX PLAN. A repudiation of FDR’s New Deal.

AUSTRALIA. Marriage equality bill passes Senate (see below). PM Malcolm Turnbull flips on ‘religious freedom’ amendments: ‘The prime minister backed the amendments after pressure from conservatives to do more to protect religious freedom despite earlier saying that the cross-party bill, which passed the Senate on Wednesday, “does not impose any restrictions on religious freedoms at all”.’

MAURICE WILLIAMSON. New Zealand lawmaker who gave this speech has become an icon for it in Japan: “This speech, made for the political climate of a New Zealand four years ago, struck a chord with people in Japan where same-sex marriage is not legal. The speech became especially relevant after a member of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Wataru Takeshita, said same-sex couples should not be allowed to attend banquets at the Imperial Palace in the presence of the Emperor and Empress.”

Beyonce VMAsED SHEERAN. Beyonce is about to make a debut on one of his biggest hits.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME. Defending the film’s lack of gay sex.

JAPAN. Foreign Ministry policy changed to include same-sex couples: “Foreign Minister Taro Kono said same-sex partners of foreign diplomats based in Japan will from now on be welcome at ministry events, but he remained vague on whether foreign dignitaries and their partners could attend imperial parties. Speaking at the Lower House Budget Committee on Nov. 28, Kono responded to a question about a recent remark by Wataru Takeshita, chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s General Council.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS. Chris Hayes trolls Trump with montage of Obama saying “Merry Christmas.”

NET NEUTRALITY. Comcast deleted pledge the day after the FCC announced repeal plans: ‘Comcast spokesperson Sena Fitzmaurice has been claiming that we got the story wrong. But a further examination of how Comcast’s net neutrality promises have changed over time reveals another interesting tidbit—Comcast deleted a “no paid prioritization” pledge from its net neutrality webpage on the very same day that the Federal Communications Commission announced its initial plan to repeal net neutrality rules.

Uber Faces More Awkward Questions Over Safety Of Drivers And Passengers

Uber Faces More Awkward Questions Over Safety Of Drivers And Passengers
Uber faces questions over protection offered to drivers who work more than 60 hours a week amid fears passenger safety is being put at risk.

Rachel Reeves, chair of the Commons Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy committee, has written to the taxi tech firm to clarify its policies for those who work much longer than the typical working week.

Responding to an earlier submission of evidence from Uber, the Labour MP wrote (pdf): “I would be grateful if you could update the Committee on the missing figures of how many and what proportion of drivers work more than 70hrs and 80hrs per week.”

Uber said just six percent of those drivers using its app work more than 60 hours a week.

Under working time regulations, people can’t work more than 48 hours a week on average over 17 weeks, but can choose to opt-out, according to the government.

The call for greater clarity over how Uber runs its business comes after the firm lost its London operating licence, as well as an appeal against it at an employment tribunal.

Trade unions including GMB have raised concerns over driver and passenger safety, with long working hours cited as an issue.

Transport for London (TfL) described Uber as “not fit and proper” in its decision to revoke the firm’s right to operate in the capital.

At an early hearing of the Commons committee, Uber boss Andrew Byrne revealed the firm was testing the ability to force drivers to log out if they had been online for more than 12 hours in a single day.

Uber says drivers “spend an average of 30 hours a week logged into” its app.

A spokesperson added: “However, this is not the same as the number of hours spent driving since drivers can log in while on a break or doing other things.

“We take the issue of tired driving seriously, which is why we regularly remind drivers to take rest breaks and will shortly be introducing hours limits in our app.”

The appeal against TfL’s ruling will begin with a court date on 11 December.

Uber recently announced millions of its British customers were affected by a hack of its data last year.

CORRECTION: An earlier version misstated the date of an appeal ruling as 10 December. In fact, the appeal against TfL’s ruling will be heard on 11 December.

Watch Danica Roem’s inspirational and comedic interview on ‘The Opposition with Jordan Klepper’

Watch Danica Roem’s inspirational and comedic interview on ‘The Opposition with Jordan Klepper’

The Opposition with Jordan Klepper

Last night, Virginia Delegate-elect Danica Roem appeared on ‘The Opposition with Jordan Klepper’ to discuss the recent election, her history-making victory, and how she chooses to refrain from attacking her constituents. And GLAAD’s staff was honored to be invited to the show and to meet Danica and Jordan!

On each episode of ‘The Opposition,’ Klepper takes a satirical look on the day’s news, infusing it with comedic and a clever spins. During his interview with Roem, Klepper expertly tackled key issues from her race, Rome’s strategy for winning her campaign, and even touched on her affinity for old school thrash metal music. Roem’s no-nonsense stance on issues affecting her local community made it clear that she was in this race to improve the lives of those living in her district.

At one point Klepper brought up a recent column in The New York Times that referred to Roem as ‘boring’ – her priceless response was:

“I don’t know at what point in American culture a transgender, metalhead, journalist, stepmom, vegetarian became boring, but guilty as charged…”

Earlier this month, Roem was elected Virginia’s first transgender state legislator for her commitment to local Virginia issues and was invited by GLAAD and pop star Demi Lovato to walk the carpet at this year’s American Music Awards. The two spoke out on the red carpet about LGBTQ equality. GLAAD’s president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said of Roem: “Danica Roem is a trailblazer whose win in Virginia showcased both how young people and marginalized communities can impact voting results and how every American deserves an opportunity to work hard and achieve their dreams.”

Take a look at some of GLAAD’s staff with Jordan and Danica, who was sporting a & pin from GLAAD’s Together Movement!
