Police Force Praised For Tweeting Powerful Open Letter To Women In Abusive Relationships

Police Force Praised For Tweeting Powerful Open Letter To Women In Abusive Relationships
A police force in Scotland has been praised for using Twitter to help women in abusive relationships by writing an open letter telling them: “Help is out there.”

Officers on the Lochaber and Skye Police force, which covers the highlands ans islands of western Scotland, addressed a woman in the message of support.

But they later added the message on social media was to help “anyone who may be at risk”.

The series of tweets opens by saying:

“A letter to a young woman in Skye. We know you follow this account and want you to see this.

“We’ve told you previously that we think you are at risk of domestic abuse from your partner.”

We want to help you and are doing lots with other agencies to try to keep you safe. You might not see us, you might not even like us being involved but we are always thinking about how we can help you.

November 18, 2017
We think he’s probably told you, “It won’t happen again”, “I’m sorry”, “I’ll change”, he’s maybe even told you that it’s your fault – IT’S NOT. The violence, threats, degrading comments and controlling behaviour are not the life you need to lead, it can be better.

You are not trapped and you are not alone, we can help you get out, your family and friends can help you get out and @scotwomensaid can help you get out. Call us, come to the Police station, phone someone, speak to local Womens Aid worker 01478613365 or 0800 027 1234.

It continued:

“We want to help you and are doing lots with other agencies to try to keep you safe. You might not see us, you might not even like us being involved but we are always thinking about how we can help you. “Your family and friends have told you they think you are in danger – they support you and want you to be safe. “We think he’s probably told you, ‘It won’t happen again’, ‘I’m sorry’, ‘I’ll change’, he’s maybe even told you that it’s your fault – IT’S NOT. “The violence, threats, degrading comments and controlling behaviour are not the life you need to lead, it can be better. “You are not trapped and you are not alone, we can help you get out, your family and friends can help you get out and Womens Aid can help you get out. “Call us, come to the Police station, phone someone, speak to local Womens Aid worker 01478613365 or 0800 027 1234. “There is no excuse for domestic abuse. Help is out there.”
Marsha Scott, chief executive of Scottish Women’s Aid, said she thought the tweets were a “great, creative use of social media”.

Scottish Women’s Aid runs a 24/7 national helpline for women who have experienced domestic abuse, as well as a network of local support across the country.

“Lochaber and Skye Police are trying to reach out in a different way which is fascinating and exciting,” she told BBC Scotland.

@lochaberwa and @Rosswomensaid are the local stars of Women’s Aid and will be well-placed to work with @LochabSkyePol to publicise all the support available. Great to see police and services working together and sharing Scotland’s Helpline: 08000271234 t.co/m57o2TtYIS

On behalf of the #HebridesWomensNetwork… thank u so much!!!! I personally know of one #domesticabuse victim who saw this today. This was a genius move on social media x

November 19, 2017
I felt quite emotional reading this. Been there, done that, got out. Took a while, but once I did, I slowly put my life back together. You have the strength to do this, you just need to put one foot in front of each other until you’re out x

November 18, 2017
If you’re the woman and you read this, please please get out of your relationship. They never change they’re not capable. I had 2 violent relationships over 15 years. I’m free now and I can’t say enough how much better life is without abuse. Be strong there’s plenty help for you.

November 18, 2017
Sincere thanks for the positive response to our #domesticabuse appeal today. It was a reach-out to anyone who may be at risk – whether you live in #Skye or #Stirling, #Lochaber or #Largs. Anyone can be affected, but by reaching out we can start making a difference together

Wes Goodman

Wes Goodman caught

More details are emerging about Wes Goodman, the Christian “family values/natural marriage” GOP Ohio State Rep. who resigned this week after being caught having a sexual encounter with a man in his office.

Two former GOP congressional staffers offended by Goodman’s hypocrisy came forward with stories about the lawmaker to Cleveland.com:

Johnny Hadlock, then a staffer for another GOP congressman in Washington, said he met Goodman in 2010. Hadlock said he confided in Goodman that he was a closeted gay man and the two began exchanging text messages.

In an interview with cleveland.com, Hadlock described the messages as sexting and gay banter, and said he engaged in phone sex with Goodman.

Hadlock said that Goodman would engage him when his wife was out of town or sleeping but that it wasn’t harassment: “we both knew what we were doing and we were both fine doing it.”

But another “conservative with Ohio ties” told the paper that Goodman did engage in harassment as well:

“The conservative operative said he’d target college kids who wanted to have him as a mentor and were scared to report his sexual advances because they didn’t want to damage their own careers. A former co-worker shared screenshots of messages Goodman sent him that the operative likened to the lewd texts that derailed the congressional career of New York’s Anthony Weiner.”

Yet another GOP staffer described Goodman’s habits on Craigslist:

Another former GOP congressional staffer, Chris Donnelly, told cleveland.com that Goodman replied to a Craigslist post on a board for men seeking men, and the two had a sexual encounter in 2008. In a response shown to cleveland.com, an email account using the name Brady Murphey described himself as a “straight/curious” guy who needed to be discreet…

…Donnelly said Goodman was “all over Craigslist” and responded to several ads posted by Donnelly and other gay men.

“It became a running joke between me and my gay friends on Capitol Hill,” Donnelly said. “It’s not like it was some one-off thing.”

On Friday, the Washington Post published a report that Goodman was cut off from the the conservative Council for National Policy by its president, the virulently anti-LGBT hate group leader Tony Perkins, after an incident in which Goodman, then a rising conservative candidate for local office, sexually assaulted an 18-year-old at a Ritz Carlton hotel in D.C. during one of the group’s functions:

Hours later, upstairs in a hotel guest room, an 18-year-old college student who had come to the event with his parents said the candidate unzipped his pants and fondled him in the middle of the night. The frightened teenager fled the room and told his mother and stepfather, who demanded action from the head of the organization hosting the conference.

“If we endorse these types of individuals, then it would seem our whole weekend together was nothing more than a charade,” the stepfather wrote to Tony Perkins, president of the Council for National Policy.

“Trust me . . . this will not be ignored nor swept aside,” replied Perkins, who also heads the Family Research Council, a prominent evangelical activist group. “It will be dealt with swiftly, but with prudence.”

Goodman won his race that year.

Royal Blood Concert Sees Man Arrested With 53 Stolen Mobile Phones

Royal Blood Concert Sees Man Arrested With 53 Stolen Mobile Phones
A 22-year-old man has been arrested after police found him with 53 stolen mobile phones after a Royal Blood gig.

Officers carried out a “proactive” operation after receiving intelligence that previous gigs by the rock band had been targeted, West Midlands Police said.

The man was detained on suspicion of theft in Broad Street, near to the concert at Arena Birmingham, on Saturday night, The Press Association reports.

We made an arrest and recovered 50 phones following last night’s @royalblooduk gig at @ArenaBirmingham. Here’s how to get in touch if you’re missing your handset. #royalblood t.co/mjjHCg3RbJ pic.twitter.com/2A1GhvdCsO — West Midlands Police (@WMPolice) November 19, 2017
Officers said the majority of victims had been identified but urged others to get in contact.

Detective Sergeant Jeff Clifford of CID said: “It’s an unfortunate reality that large crowds at concerts such as this make rich pickings for career criminals.

“We’re hot on the heels of these offenders but you can also reduce your chances of falling victim to such crimes by remaining extra vigilant when attending busy events.

“If you think you had your phone taken last night, please get in touch with us and we can check whether or not we have been able to recover it.”

Morrissey Defends Kevin Spacey, Weinstein: ‘People Know Exactly What Happens – and They Play Along…’

Morrissey Defends Kevin Spacey, Weinstein: ‘People Know Exactly What Happens – and They Play Along…’
Morrissey

Morrissey

Morrissey made headlines this week by spewing an even more informed, offensive commentary about Kevin Spacey than Gay Talese.

Here’s what he had to say about the actor who’s the subject of at least 20 sexual abuse allegations at London’s Queen Vic Theatre alone (via Stereogum):

“As far as I know, he was in a bedroom with a 14-year-old. Kevin Spacey was 26 and boy 14 was wondering where the boy’s parents were. One wonders if the boy did not know what could happen. I do not know about you, but I’ve never been in situations like this in my youth. Never. I always knew what could happen. When you are in somebody’s bedroom, you have to be aware of where that can lead to. That’s why it does not sound very credible to me. It seems to me Spacey has been unnecessarily attacked.”

And his comments on Harvey Weinstein:

“People know exactly what happens. And they play along. Afterward, they feel embarrassed, or they do not like it. And then they turn it around and say: I was attacked, I was surprised, I was dragged into the room. But if everything had gone well and had it given them a great career, they would not talk about it. I hate rape. I hate attacks. I hate sexual situations that are forced on someone. But in many cases, one looks at the circumstances and thinks that the person referred to as a victim is merely disappointed. Throughout the history of music and rock ‘n’ roll there have been musicians who have slept with their groupies. If you go through history, almost everyone is guilty of sleeping with minors.”

And the sexual harassment topic in general:

“All at once everyone is guilty. Anyone who has ever said to someone else, “I like you,” is suddenly being charged with sexual harassment. You have to put these things in the right relations. If I can not tell anyone that I like him, how should he ever know? Of course, there are extreme cases, rape is disgusting, every physical attack is repulsive. But we have to see it in relative terms. Otherwise, every person on this planet is guilty. We can not permanently decide from above what we are allowed to do and what we can not do. Because then we are all trapped. Some people are very awkward when it comes to romance anyway. They do not know what to do and then their behavior is aggressive.”
