DVD: “Lazy Eye,” “Shared Rooms,” “Looking: The Complete Series,” & More!
Gays and their relationship dramas – and comedies – rule this week’s home entertainment highlights.
Lazy Eye sees a pair of ex-boyfriends reconnect over a weekend, while Shared Rooms tracks three gay couples that connect during the holiday season. Finally, fans of HBO’s Looking can have a binge watch with Looking: The Complete Series And The Movie.
Scroll down for the details, trailers, and your comments!
($24.99 DVD; Breaking Glass Pictures)
Writer/director Tim Kirkman (Loggerheads, Dear Jesse) is back with a drama about a pair of ex-boyfriends, 40-something graphic designer Dean and a fellow he had a super hot yet abruptly ended fling some 15 years ago, Alex. When Alex suddenly reappears, Dean invites him on a getaway out in the Mojave desert. Will their reconnect ignite a more lasting sort of spark? What sorts of secrets and memories also await? Inspired by Kirkman’s own experience reconnecting with an ex, this is a meditative and beautifully shot character piece. Extras include outtakes and a film festival Q&A session.
($24.99 DVD; Wolfe)
Three sets of characters in Los Angeles’ Silverlake neighborhood deal with major drama – and lovin’ – over the holidays in the 8th film by prolific gay writer/director Rob Williams. A married couple, Laslo and Cal, with no desire to have kids find themselves unexpectedly playing guardian to a gay teenage nephew whose mom gave him the boot. Meanwhile, a pair of guys who hook up online, Sid and Gray, may have something deeper going on than either realizes, while roommates Julian and Dylan find their arrangement at a sudden crossroads when one comes home early from a business trip… Spoiler: when all of these folks manage to end up at the same party, things will end happy. Extras include outtakes and a commentary.
Looking: The Complete Series And The Movie
($49.99 Blu-ray, $39.99 DVD; HBO)
HBO’s all-to-short-lived San Francisco-set gay series and its climactic movie are now gathered together for a tasty binge watch weekend. Stars Jonathan Groff, Russell Tovey, Murray Bartlett, Raul Castillo and the rest are superb, and so is the hot (and realistic) sex, while writer/director/co-creator Andrew Haigh (Weekend) delivers a naturalistic, relevant and valentine-like tribute to gay life in the Bay Area. Love it or meh it, it’s an LGBT must-see.

MOST FAVORED NATION? Trump’s global business empire is a critical conflict of interest: “At least 111 Trump companies have done business in 18 countries and territories across South America, Asia and the Middle East, a Washington Post analysis of Trump financial filings shows. The business interests range from sprawling, ultraluxury real estate complexes to one-man holding companies and branding deals in Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Panama and other countries, including some where the United States maintains sensitive diplomatic ties.

INTELLIGENCE CHIEFS TO OBAMA. Remove NSA chief Mike Rogers: “The recommendation, delivered to the White House last month, was made by Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter and Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr., according to several U.S. officials familiar with the matter.”
POLL. Trump’s favorability rating grows: “Forty-six percent of voters now have a very favorable or somewhat favorable opinion of the president-elect. Twelve percent have a somewhat unfavorable opinion and 34 percent have a very unfavorable opinion of him. It’s a dramatic uptick since the election. Trump’s favorability has grown 9 points, 37 percent to 46 percent, compared to a Morning Consult poll right before the election — while his unfavorability has dropped 15 points, from 61 percent to 46 percent.

INDIA. Train crash leaves 140+ dead: “Officials said that 142 people lost their lives in the accident, with bodies of nearly 60 identified. Over 150 people were injured when 14 bogies of the train derailed. The death toll could rise as some of the injured are said to be in serious condition. Rescue workers continue to comb through the mangled remains of the bogies for possible survivors.”
DRUG-DRIVING. Scientists develop more accurate test for cocaine: “Drug-driving is an increasing problem,” said Melanie Bailey of the University of Surrey and co-author of the research published in the journal Analytical Methods. “We want to try to improve safety on the roads and this is one way to do that because we will be able to monitor a larger number of people without wasting their time by getting false positive results.”
SYRIA. The last hospital in East Aleppo has been destroyed by Russian bombing: “The last operating hospital in east Aleppo has been destroyed by airstrikes, leaving up to 250,000 residents without access to surgery or specialist care, and rebel-held districts at the point of collapse.”
KANYE WEST. The meltdown continues: “Kanye West ditched a concert packed with more than 13,000 fans in Sacramento, Calif., late Saturday after unleashing a lengthy tirade against Beyoncé and Jay Z. ‘Get ready to have a field day, press, because the show’s over,’ the Yeezy star said, dropping the hot microphone at the Golden 1 Center.”
CHLOE GRACE MORETZ. Actress to star in gay conversion therapy drama: “Chloe Grace Moretz and Sasha Lane are set to star in Desiree Akhavan’s The Miseducation of Cameron Post. Based on Emily Danforth’s acclaimed and controversial coming-of-age novel of the same name, the film is set in 1993 and follows a girl forced into gay conversion therapy center after getting caught with the prom queen.”

Mayor Threatened With Homophobic Note Sent From Anonymous Coward

27-year-old Alex Morse has accomplished a lot in his young life. After graduating from Brown University with a degree in Urban Studies and Planning, he was elected mayor of Holyoke, Massachusetts (pop. 40.135) in 2011 when we was just 22, becoming the town’s youngest and first openly gay mayor. He was reelected in 2013, and again in 2015.
Over his tenure, he has received plenty of angry letters, tweets, and emails criticizing him and his policies. But earlier this week, he received a different kind of note:
“Alex, you are one of the most selfish people I know due to your ‘gay’ lifestyle,” it read. “You are going down.”
The note was not signed and had no return address.

Morse chose to share it on Facebook.
“It’s a more threatening message than usual,” he tells the Boston Globe, “and given the context of the culture that seems to have been elevated since the Trump election, I thought it was important to shine a light on this language and behavior.”
He continues: “It’s different than writing a note that says, ‘I don’t support gay marriage,’ or ‘I don’t support rights for someone.’ But to demean someone’s humanity based on their sexuality takes it to another level.”

Morse added that the current political climate in America is “disappointing” but emphasized that it is “more important than ever before to speak out and come together.” He also said that he plans to file a criminal report about the note.

Tom Daley Gives Diving Lessons to Ellen’s Producer Andy: WATCH
As we know, Presidential Medal of Honor recipient Ellen DeGeneres does have a bit of a sadistic streak, and she enjoys sending her executive producer Andy Lassner to take on various tasks that could possibly humiliate him for her pleasure.
This week’s task is perhaps one of his most enjoyable, and most successful: diving lessons with the extremely fit British Olympian Tom Daley, who reveals himself to be not only a kind guy, but a great teacher as well.
Many compliments were exchanged.
“What are you keeping in there?”, asked Andy, as Tom stripped down to his Speedo.
“Most people don’t look like that when they jump in,” said Daley, impressed by Andy’s entrance into the pool.
“Most people don’t look like this ever,” said Andy.

NYC Councilman Threatened With Execution by Trump Supporter Leads March to Trump Tower: WATCH
Gay New York City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (above and right) received death threats last week after he announced plans to hold a march protesting Donald Trump’s presidency.
Queens rep Van Bramer was threatened with execution in a hate-filled homophobic email attacking him for not supporting Trump
The anonymous email read:
“Rest of the people from Queens do not agree with your homosexual lifestyle, so get the [expletive] out of this country, you [expletive] traitor! I will keep a close eye on your every moves so that when it’s time to execute traitors I will try my best so that your name is included in that list of traitors. Execution is the penalty for a traitor, that is the Law of This Land!”
According to the NY Daily News, another email sent last Tuesday from the same Gmail account read:
“I know that you are a gay man and you can do whatever you want at your own privacy. But don’t push your agenda to other normal males and normal kids as we find that pretty disgusting.”
Accompanied by around 500 Queens residents, Van Bramer went ahead with the protest march on Saturday to let Trump know his rhetoric is not indicative of his native borough’s values.

— NYC Council (@NYCCouncil) November 20, 2016
Prior to the march, Van Bramer said:
“That’s unfortunately the times we live in. I’m not scared and we’re not stopping our peaceful and patriotic opposition to some of the really horrible things that this administration has promised to do. We’re not backing down.”
He also said Mayor de Blasio called to say that “all of New York is standing with me.”
NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill has said police are zeroing in on a suspect.
