All We Want For Christmas: The Queerty Wish List

All We Want For Christmas: The Queerty Wish List

Dear Gay Santa,

Everyone at Queerty and our parent company GayCities has been incredibly naughty relatively nice this year. We’ve worked very hard to keep our readers up-to-date with the great strides made in achieving equality during the past 12 months. We’ve also applauded all the notable folks who’ve come out this year and we’ve hissed at all the silly haters in 2014. So now it’s payback time and we’ve compiled a list of things we want for Christmas. We tried not to be too selfish.

Happy holidays!

Pour yourself another brandy egg nog and scroll down for our lists.

Orchids
My other items are so low tech but my fave gift is simple: a nice pot of orchids. Purple or white just are amazing to look at and do well in my San Francisco home.

Native Union’s JUMP Cable

Someone just got me this and it’s awesome. It charges its own battery while you charge your phone and then you can use it as a back up if your phone dies. But most importantly is how small it is. It can fit into your pocket very easily, while all the other solutions are just too bulky to remember to carry with me.

I always misplace things around my house, this little tile goes on a keychain or gets stuck to your remote and has an app that allows you to find it easily.  ALso good when you lose something away from the house:  While Tile doesn’t have GPS real-time location information, the app does automatically record the last place your phone saw your Tile. Because if you have to retrace your steps, it’s good to know where to start walking.

Dan Tracer, Queerty staff writer:

fleetwood-mac-1

Fleetwood Mac tickets

I’ve been trying to see them for years and it needs to finally happen, already. I’m confident Stevie feels the same way.

Kabuki_baths_men

Kabuki Spa

An annual pass to the spa in San Francisco’s Japan Town, complete with a 50 mins. massage every other week, of course.

Jake Myers, Account Manager for Queerty and GayCities:

play1-giftcard.front

 Sonos wireless speaker

The Sonos speaker is a wireless speaker that I can stream my iTunes to, as well as stream my Howard Stern every morning on Sirius Satellite Radio. In a post-stereo age, I need something that can listen to music throughout my apartment with better sound quality than a laptop or my iPhone.

rs

Babolat PLAY Pure Drive

A tennis racquet that tracks your play.

10121441

HoMedics Sound Spa Relaxation Sound Machine

I’m a city boy and sleeping in silence is deafening. I need something to drown out the silence, and I don’t really want to use my iPhone app every night.

Gabe Cooper, GayCities and Queerty Marketing, Content and Community:

giftbox_low

A strapping gift box

The gift box comes fully wrapped and includes a tie or bow tie of your choosing, a handmade skin care product (shave kit or specialty bar of soap) and two pairs of socks.

051413_Force_popUpBanner_grey_o

Fitbit

It really helps motivate me to at least hit 10,000 steps per day and drink enough water.

unnamed

Soul Socks

I love funky dress socks, and they make great stocking stuffers.

Dave McMahon, GayCities & Queerty Marketing & Sales Associate:

Revolights Bike Lights

I’ll settle for a bike helmet that doesn’t make me look like Toad from Super Mario Bros.

Button-down shirts

I’m always on the lookout for cool and comfy new shirts that make me feel a tiny bit professional or fashionable.

Music

The way to my heart is through my Spotify.

Jeremy Kinser, Managing Editor, Queerty:

candle-pic

Buckler’s Camp Blend Soy Candle

This scent will take you back to that first feeling of freedom you experienced sitting around the campfire with your buds. Light it up, pass it around.

Barbra Streisand by Steve Schapiro and Lawrence Schiller

Only the entertainer commonly referred to as “the greatest star” could merit a lavish photo book that costs $750 (and there’s a special “art edition” with a price tag of $1800!). I’ll accept either.

il_570xN.701208053_jibn

Modern Painted Aspen Tree Ring Art

Until I can live in a rustic cabin in the woods, this is the next best thing.

Graham Gremore, Queerty contributing writer:

unnamed-1

Meryl Streep Risograph Print

This limited edition risograph print of Meryl Streep by illustrator Caroline Dowsett is almost too much to handle.

unnamed-2

Woven Elephant Boxers

There’s nothing I don’t love about these elephant boxer shorts with a trap door in the back. Seriously, nothing.

unnamed

Gladys Goose Lamp

I already have one of these in my guest room, but I love it so much I want another one for my bedroom. And maybe a third one for my living room. Ideally, I would like a Gladys Goose lamp in every room of my house.

Matt Baume, Queerty contributing writer:

jpeg

Derek Jacobi’s book that I still have not gotten around to reading, for some reason. I really need to get on that. Have you seen him and Sir Ian on Vicious? I die.
jpeg-1
I am completely obsessed with these book and this show, and also completely confused by them. As much as I love the stories, I am constantly having to flip through the pages to remember who anyone is, what their deal is, and who they had sex with/killed. Reference books are a must-have for getting any further than the first few chapters.
hero
I am the worst at dressing myself. Left to my own devices, I’ll wind up in clown pants and an inside-out T-shirt. This is why I need a subscription to a service where a professional will size me up, decide what looks good, and then send me a box of things every month.

Kate Clinton Talks LGBT Year in Review and 2015 LGBT Predictions (AUDIO)

Kate Clinton Talks LGBT Year in Review and 2015 LGBT Predictions (AUDIO)
2014-12-22-Kate14HUFF.jpg
This week I talked with Kate Clinton our favorite political humorist for our sixth annual LGBT year in review. As we head into the New Year it’s time to reflect on 2014 and chat about what 2015 will bring our LGBT community. This has definitely been another year for marriage equality. As the year comes to an end gay and lesbian couples can now legally marry in 35 states. However, as we move forward with LGBT equality in America there are still 79 countries where being LGBT is illegal.

I talked to Kate about how much work still needs to be done and her spin on our current LGBT issues. When asked what she would like to see happen for LGBT civil rights in 2015 Clinton stated:

Well I think our big challenge in 2015 is going to be the kind of slimy interpretation of the horrible Hobby Lobby case; the right to refuse on your religious convictions and that’s bigger than a company that does flowers saying ‘No we’re not going to do flowers for that gay wedding’. But I do think there’s going to be a lot of push back and not that kind of full frontal assault on marriage equality, but again just more chipping away of LGBT rights.

On marriage equality heading to the US Supreme Court in 2015 Clinton added: “I do think it’s moving. I think that Evan Wolfson, the intrepid Evan Wolfson and the Freedom to Marry have really had a plan that they have been following and I do think their absolute goal is to get a decision about federal marriage equality at the Supreme Court.”

When asked about LGBT workplace protection and the Republican majority in 2015 Clinton concluded,

I think there’s been a lot of work done through organizations like Out & Equal that have really been working with corporations and their memberships and their employee relations groups to really talk about discrimination in the workplace. I think that it’s been very much under the radar. They’ve been doing amazing work with corporations not only here but internationally and I do think that the notion that ENDA is just good business might sway moderate corporate business types in the Republican Party. I do think that it does have a possibility but we can’t do it without trans rights…

LISTEN :

Clinton is also very involved with NCLR (The National Center for Lesbian Rights) and LPAC (Lesbian Political Action Committee) conceptualized by her wife Urvashi Vaid to give lesbians a real and meaningful seat at the political table. Currently Kate is working on a new book and revealed to me the name of her new 2015 tour “Hello Katey: A One Woman Pussy Riot” she’ll be performing nationally.

Guys Strip Down To Their Undies To Help Teach You Lyrics To Nick Jonas’ “Teacher”

Guys Strip Down To Their Undies To Help Teach You Lyrics To Nick Jonas’ “Teacher”

If you’ve seen Nick Jonas‘ lyric video for “Teacher” and thought to yourself, “Sure, the guys are hot and all, but what’s with all the women? It’s killing the mood,” then perhaps you’ll find this all-male gay version more to your liking.

Unofficially dubbed “Gay Teacher,” the Heath Daniels-directed video combines some of our favorite things: Jock straps, gyration and a solid ’80s R&B beat you can dance to.

Here’s some of what’s inside:

Amnesty International 'Disappointed' In Ireland's Current Draft of Trans Bill

Amnesty International 'Disappointed' In Ireland's Current Draft of Trans Bill

Screen Shot 2014-12-22 at 1.58.47 PM

Amnesty International and LGBT activists in Ireland are disappointed in the current draft of a new bill that recognizes transgender identities, but requires them to jump through several bureaucratic hoops just to do so reports Pink News. If passed, the bill will legally recognize transgender identities in dealings with the State, public bodies, civil and commercial society. AI and LGBT activists are grateful that the Irish government is attempting to validate transgender identities however, the process to do so is rather harmful.

The bill forces married transgender people to divorce in order to gain gender recognition, in accordance with the country’s ban on same-sex marriage. Additionally while the bill allows for 16 and 17-year-olds to obtain legal gender recognition, they require a court order and parental consent to do so, which campaigners warn could cause further harm. Denis Krivosheev of AI believes the bill needs heavy revision.

Said Krivosheev:

Krivosheev“This bill will require substantial changes if it is to tackle the serious issue of discrimination against transgender people. Rather than making it as easy as possible for all transgender people to obtain legal recognition of their identity, there are several groups that will be short-changed by the bill – in particular those who are married or in civil partnerships, minors, and those who do not wish to undergo medical treatment.

“The bill completely overlooks the needs of those who may wish to remain married, or who are going through divorce proceedings, while obtaining legal recognition of their gender. This is a violation of their human rights.

“Instead, the bill cruelly forces transgender people to separate from their loved one – and then spend years in limbo without either a partner or the legal recognition of their identity.”

Meanwhile, the Irish government has announced that a referendum on same-sex marriage will take place next May.
