Being told that I’ve had #1 albums in six consecutive decades makes me feel truly blessed and grateful to have such loyal fans. I feel you rooting for me and I so appreciate all of your energy and support.

It’s especially sweet since I get to share this moment with my wonderfully talented partners who I had the pleasure of singing with: Michael Bublé, Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, Babyface, Billy Joel, Blake Shelton, Lionel Richie, Andrea Bocelli, John Legend, Josh Groban, my beloved son Jason Gould…and last but not least, Elvis Presley…forever The King!

Finally, thank you to Rob Stringer and my Columbia Records family, my manager Marty Erlichman, my creative team on this project – Kenny Edmonds, Walter Afanasieff, Dave Reitzas, Bill Ross, and Jay Landers…and Ken Sunshine for getting the word out… we did it guys!!

With lots of love,
Barbra”

Alison Bechdel Opens Up on MacArthur Genius Grant and Assimilation

Alison Bechdel Opens Up on MacArthur Genius Grant and Assimilation

Alison Bechdel, celebrated cartoonist and inventor of the “Bechdel test,” has a new interview out with Buzzfeed. Bechdel discusses her recent receiving of a MacArthur ‘genius grant,’ awarded for “command of sequential narrative and her aesthetic as a visual artist” exhibited by her long-running comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For.”

Bechdel is humble in the interview, sounding more bemused than braggy:

This is so weird. My life has been so crazy. I’ve had about five lifetimes worth of good fortune. For six weeks, I’ve been at an artist residency in Umbria, living in a castle with a bunch of other artists. Now this?[…] You couldn’t pick a less likely career trajectory likely to lead to a MacArthur award than what I’ve been doing. A comic strip? It’s crazy.

Bechdel also touched her work’s specificity to LGBT people. She shared a particular concern of hers — the question of gay assimilation, due to the increasing acceptance of gay marriage. Says Bechdel:

At the danger of waxing nostalgic about the ‘old days,’ I don’t want to be like everyone else. I want acceptance, but I want acceptance of my difference, not my sameness. It’s a funny contract. The cultural machine wants to chew everyone up and turn them into this uniform little substance.

Does Kathryn Knott, Suspect In Alleged Philadelphia Anti-Gay Attack, Have A Homophobic History?

Does Kathryn Knott, Suspect In Alleged Philadelphia Anti-Gay Attack, Have A Homophobic History?
The social media presence of one of three Pennsylvania-based suspects in an alleged anti-gay attack has come under intense scrutiny after the woman turned herself in this week.

Katherine Knott is reportedly being charged with criminal conspiracy and two counts each of aggravated and simple assault, and reckless endangerment, according to the Associated Press. Knott, 24, turned herself in on Sept. 24, along with 26-year-old Kevin Harrigan and Phillip Williams, also 24.

Knott, who was identified by local ABC affiliate WPVI-TV and other media outlets as the daughter of Chalfont, Bucks County Police Chief Karl Knott, is a suspect in the Sept. 11 beating of two gay men, ages 27 and 28, in downtown Philadelphia. The men, who have reportedly asked to remain anonymous, told CBS Philadelphia that they were attacked by a “well-dressed” and intoxicated mob that began taunting them with anti-gay epithets while they were on their way to dinner.

One of the two victims suffered a bone fracture in his face that will require surgery, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Among the many Tweets that have since come into question since Knott’s surrender:

Meanwhile, Knott’s attorney, Louis Busico, told WPVI-TV that the incident was not motivated by homophobia, and that his client “played no role in this other than going out to dinner with friends the night this happened.”

“We don’t deny that there was a gentleman who was assaulted,” he added. “We don’t deny that this gentleman was injured. But I unequivocally deny that my client did anything to hurt this man; she wouldn’t hurt anybody.”

The Huffington Post has reached out to Busico for comment and had yet to hear back at press time.
