South Dakota Teen Fights Back After Manager Brands Him “Gaytard”
A gay South Dakota teen is raising awareness on social media after enduring months of discriminatory harassment from a manager at his fast food restaurant job, who allegedly forced him to wear a name tag that read “GAYTARD.”
16-year-old Tyler Brandt filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission this week, claiming that the manager of Taco John’s in Yankton had been looking for reasons to fire him based on his sexual orientation. On June 23, Brandt claims the manager forced him to wear the “GAYTARD” name tag in full view of customers.
Brandt says he wore the name tag because he feared being fired, though he resigned the following day. He explained in an open letter posted by the ACLU, adding that the manager also called him “faggot,” among other slurs:
Every time I had to help a customer, I tried to stand so that it was hidden by the register. But that didn’t really make much difference because the manager kept calling me “gaytard” really loudly in front of customers for the rest of my shift: “Hey, gaytard, help this customer!” and “Take out the trash, gaytard!” It was extremely humiliating.
Speaking with the Argus Leader, John Scott, a manager at the franchised Taco John’s location, said Brandt has fabricated much of the story and originally asked a manager to make the name tag for him to wear.
In response to the allegation, Brandt said “Why would I want to do something that insults who I am?”
Taco John’s International CEO Jeff Linville released a statement Wednesday, saying that Taco John’s intends to fully cooperate with the EEOC’s investigation. Linville says that because this particular location is a franchise location, and that “the decision whether to discipline the franchisee may only be made when it is legally concluded that a law has been violated by the franchise owners.”
Linville also sympathized with Brandt, adding: ““We think what happened to Tyler is deplorable, and this is a chance for Taco John’s International to make it right.”
In the meantime, the ACLU has launched a Tumblr asking people to submit positive messages of encouragement for Brandt.

Daniel Mark Ogloff, Canadian Teacher, Suspended After Placing 'I'm Gay' Sticker On Student's back
A Canadian high school teacher saw his teacher license suspended after placing a piece of masking tape printed with the words “I’m gay” on a 11th grade student’s back.
Daniel Mark Ogloff, a metal and machine shop teacher at Aldergrove Community Secondary School in Langley, British Columbia, served an unpaid 10-week suspension in 2013 and was stripped of his teaching certificate for two weeks at the start of this school year for the prank, which took place last September, according to The Province.
The publication cites a report from school officials, which said that Ogloff had “acted unprofessionally, disrespectfully and without regard for students’ physical and emotional safety.”
After Ogloff placed the tape on the student’s back, he then “gestured ‘shhh’ to the students,” and “pointed at another student and mouthed words to the effect, ‘It was him.’”
Meanwhile, other students were laughing and taking photos.
It wasn’t the first incident over which Ogloff had been warned for his behavior, having earlier received verbal warning over comments he made to seventh grade students, followed by a letter over remarks made to a twelfth grader in class, according to CBC News.

Violent Homophobes Charged In Philly Gay Bashing Are Released On Bail
The three violent homophobic assailants charged with beating a gay couple unconscious in an unprovoked gay bashing in Philadelphia on September 11th were arraigned last night and released on bail around 3:30am.
24-year-old Kathryn Knott was released on $50,000 bail, while 24-year-old Philip Williams and 26-year-old Kevin Harrigan were released on $75,000 bail.
Despite being involved in a beating that hospitalized both victims and forced one to have his jaw wired shut, they’re still all maintaining their innocence and claiming the fight was mutually initiated, as if that would make this ok.
Kathryn Knott had become the focal point of community outrage toward the case after it was learned that her father is the Chalfont, Pennsylvania police chief, a fact that could possibly explain the police department’s failure to identify the suspects (citizens did it for them), failure to arrest them within an appropriate amount of time (it took 6 days) and general careless attitude toward the case — one police source told Philly mag this week that police “don’t have time” to investigate “simple” crimes like these.
It is being reported that Knott has been suspended from her job as an emergency room technician at Lansdale Hospital, where she has worked since May 2011, due to questionable activity on her Twitter feed.
Yesterday, we reported the extreme homophobic nature of her tweets dating back several years, and several tweets that included photos of patients in the hospital, a major violation of physician-patient privilege.
According to Philly.com:
Her tweets have also drawn the attention of her employer: Abington Health is investigating her account, on which she posted complaints about unnamed patients and photos of patient X-rays and unusual injuries, including a photo of a patient’s two dismembered fingers in a plastic bag.
The tweets could violate the hospital’s patient-privacy and social-media policies, according to the statement from Abington Health.
In interviews with investigators, the victims confirmed that Harrigan was the first to yell gay slurs, and that Williams and Knott joined in the assault after it was initiated.
It appears as though the three assailants are already getting special treatment from the media. In the exclusive CBS report that aired this morning, all three got a golden edit, and all three defense attorneys were allowed to present the points of their case to the camera. No air time for the victims or any credible defense of the victims.
Yesterday, Knott’s attorney claimed his client is “not homophobic,” and that she was “merely present” when the assault occurred.
The three are expected back in court on Tuesday.
