Breitbart Alumni Shape the Message at Trump’s White House

Sebastian Gorka

President Donald Trump’s chief strategist Steve Bannon isn’t the only former employee of Breitbart News to find a new home in the White House.

Bannon brought on Sebastian Gorka, a deputy assistant to the president and author of “Defeating Jihad: The Winnable War.”

Gorka’s refugee parents escaped from Communist Hungary in 1956. Now, he’s making the case for President Trump’s ban on refugees and immigration from seven majority-Muslim nations.

“It may be shocking to some people out there to have a president who actually wishes to stand by his promises, and who, for a year, has been talking about making these kind of changes, and when he does that you’re surprised,” Gorka says. “Politicians keeping their promises may be unusual to you, but in this White House that’s how we like to operate.”

Bannon helped turn the conservative Breitbart into a platform for far-right ideas and white supremacists. At the outlet, he worked closely with Gorka, a former national security editor and a Fox News contributor.

Gorka says journalists have deliberately misrepresented Trump’s intentions, and that on occasion it provides comic relief at the White House.

“I come in every day and with my colleagues we have a good old laugh because we open the newspapers, the ones that are supposed to be the leading authorities in America, and they write about issues where we were in the room the day before, and their reportage has absolutely no resemblance to what is actually happening inside the White House,” he says.

Gorka says the White House is not in disarray and denies its officials are sending mixed signals on policies including Washington’s stance on Ukraine and Russia. But contradictions are apparent.

Last week, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley condemned and called for an immediate end to the Russian occupation of Crimea.

“Crimea is a part of Ukraine. Our Crimea-related sanctions will remain in place until Russia returns control over the peninsula to Ukraine,” Haley said.

But in mid-January, then President-elect Trump told The Times of London he’d offer to end sanctions imposed on Russia over the annexation of Crimea in return for a nuclear arms reduction deal.

“They have sanctions on Russia — let’s see if we can make some good deals with Russia,” Trump was quoted as saying by The Times. “For one thing, I think nuclear weapons should be way down and reduced very substantially, that’s part of it. But Russia’s hurting very badly right now because of sanctions, but I think something can happen that a lot of people are gonna benefit.”

In an August interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, President-elect Trump seemed unaware that Russian President Vladimir Putin had annexed Crimea.

“He’s not going to go into Ukraine, all right? You can mark it down and you can put it down, you can take it anywhere you want,” Trump said.

“Well, he’s already there, isn’t he?” Stephanopoulos replied.

Gorka is unrepentant.

“I’m not interested in the chattering classes, in the social justice warriors,” Gorka says. “If you’re really going to ask really churlish and childish questions like that, then there really is no point to the interview.”

Billy Eichner: Mike Pence is a closeted gay man

Billy Eichner: Mike Pence is a closeted gay man

Billy on the Street’s Billy Eichner took to Twitter this past weekend to express his belief that Vice President Mike Pence is a homosexual, as right-wing website Heat Street none-too-fondly reports:

Pence is a closeted gay man who turned his self loathing into a political agenda 2 punish the part of himself he hates most. Enjoy the game!

— billy eichner (@billyeichner) February 5, 2017

Then there’s this equally unsubtle Tweet:

Mike Pence is gay.

— billy eichner (@billyeichner) January 26, 2017

Definitely succinct stuff.

By this point, Pence is probably used to being trolled on Twitter. He’s already been lampooned by the likes of Mike Hot-Pence:

Supporting @PPMW_DC is the next best thing to being at #PinkBall. Text the code “pinkball” to 41444 to Donate! ? pic.twitter.com/lqYm1Ao1Gu

He was also compared (unfavorably) to adult film star Brad Patton in memes such as this:

Right now, there’s an ongoing Reddit thread in which community members are weighing in on what exactly to do with the antigay politician and “best defend ourselves from losing the rights we worked so hard to get.”

John2Nhoj writes:

None of Pence’s attempts at making laws against gays survived here in Indiana, because large businesses that make up a great deal of the state’s economy threatened to move out of the state.

Also: unless one announces that they are gay to every business they enter the business would have to prove they are gay. It would surely generate a lot of law suits if business only guessed that people were gay, refused to serve them and they weren’t gay.

Lastly: one could and still can be fired for being gay in Indiana long before Pence was in office here.

You can join that discussion here.

28th annual #glaadawards nominees spotlight Southern, rural LGBTQ stories

28th annual #glaadawards nominees spotlight Southern, rural LGBTQ stories

One Mississippi

Last week, GLAAD announced the nominees for its 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. In a diverse cast of nominees, many portray the stories of LGBTQ individuals living in the U.S. South or in rural areas.

The Southern and rural LGBTQ community faces unique experiences, struggles, triumphs when striving for full accepatance, and may live in communities with fewer LGBTQ-specific resources available. The nominees who tell their stories voice their nuanced experiences, which often go overlooked by mainstream media narratives.

Amazon’s One Mississippi, a semi-autobiographical series by lesbian comedian Tig Notaro, tells the story of her character Tig Bavaro as she rediscovers and stays in her home of Bay St. Lucille, Mississippi following a visit to her dying mother. The Starz series Survivor’s Remorse amplifies the experiences of Black queer individuals in the south through the character of M-Chuck (Erica Ash), who moves with her family to Atlanta after brother Cam Calloway (Jessie T. Usher) signs a professional basketball contract in Atlanta.

Country musician Ty Herndon’s first release since he came out to the public as gay in late 2014, “House on Fire,” explores growing up religious and queer in the South.

Many nominees have also amplified the stories of real people in the LGBTQ community in the South, and the events and policies that affect them. In the documentary film Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four, Investigation Discovery documents the conviction, incarceration, and release of four Texan Latina lesbians falsely accused of child abuse and assault in the mid-’90s.

NBC News clip “LGBT Community Worries What Will Happen for Them in Trump Presidency” shares the fears of LGBTQ individuals across the country and in the South facing a Trump administration. The segment “North Carolina and Georgia Anti-LGBTQ Laws” on Late Night with Seth Meyers puts a spotlight on anti-LGBTQ discrimination bills and their consequences in Southern states. Elizabeth Leland’s article “Permission to Hate,” published in the Charlotte Observer, documents the fear felt by the queer community in North Carolina following HB2. “After the Orlando Shooting, the Changed Lives of Gay Latinos,” a New Yorker piece by Daniel Wenger, details the impact of the Pulse Nightclub shooting on the queer Latinx community in Orlando, FL.

Through a diverse range of media, GLAAD’s nominees shine a light on the lives and experiences of rural and Southern LGBTQ individuals, raising awareness of the challenges, victories, and day to day experience they live.
