We can’t take our eyes off this Turkish male modeling competition. Maybe you can explain why.

Hard to say why some things grab your eye on the Internet. A face you think you’ve seen before? A snapshot of some, erm, scintillatingly gorgeous cinematography? Maybe a deliberately crafted headline; lizard brain cannot help but click?

A parade of distractingly beautiful men, well-oiled and prancing around in tight-fitting bikinis for your perusal?

That last bit aptly describes the scene now standing before you; a clip from the Best Model contest in Turkey, which World of Wonder first brought our attention to.

After you’ve taken it all in — and it’s a lot to take in — maybe you can explain the drama that’s befallen this strange Gothic woman sitting in the audience and balefully pondering the fleeting nature of beauty or some shit. Lady?

If she’d only look up, her whole world could change for the better. But she won’t… she can’t

GLAAD statement on the Betsy DeVos U.S. Senate confirmation vote

GLAAD statement on the Betsy DeVos U.S. Senate confirmation vote

After weeks of negative press surrounding her anti-LGBTQ record and nomination to be the next Secretary for Education, Betsy DeVos was confirmed.

“Alarmingly high numbers of LGBTQ youth already report feeling unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation and gender identity,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President & CEO. “Confirming a nominee for Secretary of Education with a troubling record on LGBTQ rights will do nothing to protect our nation’s most vulnerable students and sends a message that our elected officials choose partisan politics over our children’s safety and well-being.”

DeVos Family Has Donated to Numerous Anti-LGBTQ Organizations which Support “Conversation Therapy” and Anti-LGBTQ Adoption Agencies. The DeVos family has funded anti-LGBTQ organizations ranging from Focus on the Family, which openly advocates for so-called “conversion therapy,” to Bethany Christian Services, an adoption agency that excludes LGBTQ parents and advocates for laws that allow them to do so, and the Heritage Foundation, which strategizes against LGBTQ policy. DeVos on Marriage Equality

In 2004, DeVos Advocated and Funded Efforts to Ban Same-Sex Marriage in Michigan. “In 2004 Betsy and Dick DeVos led the effort to put the anti-marriage amendment on the ballot and contributed over $200,000 to the campaign to enshine discrimination into the Michigan constitution.” [Pride Source, 1.10.13]

DeVos Said Marriage Equality was Driven by “Coastal Elites.” “There is one party that takes millions of dollars from celebrities and elites and in turn enthusiastically embraces their values, that chuckles at or cheers the destruction of our traditions and the coarsening of our culture, and that believes it is no big deal to redefine the most fundamental institution of mankind. But fortunately, there is another party in America that recognizes marriage between one man and one woman as an institution that was created not by man, but by God. That party will not be intimidated by the coastal elites in Hollywood or Boston. That party is not ashamed to stand up for marriage.” [Michigan GOP State Convention, 2.6.05]

Melania Trump has no plans to live in the White House, but she’s still going to redecorate it

Melania Trump has no plans to live in the White House, but she’s still going to redecorate it

This just in: Melania Trump has hired interior designer Tham Kannalikham to help redecorate the White House living quarters.

“Mrs. Trump has a deep appreciation for the historical aspects of the White House,” Melania’s senior advisor, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, said in a statement, “and with Tham’s traditional design and expertise, they are focusing on a seamless integration of elegance and comfort into where the President, the First Lady, and Barron will be spending their family time and calling their home.”

Related: Melania Trump granted permission to sue blogger for $150 million for calling her an escort

Kannalikham, too, made a statement, “I am honored by the opportunity to be working with the First Lady to make the White House feel like home.”

Given what their other home looks like, we’re sure the First Lady won’t skimp on using tax-payer dollars to line the walls with gold leaf, as well as add lots of gilded, over-the-top furnishings, tacky drapery, and gaudy chandeliers.

And all for a house she doesn’t actually plan on living in.

Last week, a source told Us Weekly that Melania was “reevaluating” her initial plans to move into the White House in June, after Barron finished up the school year, and was instead considering staying in New York indefinitely, at a reported taxpayer cost of $1 million per day, or $1.4 billion over the course of four years.

“They could go either way right now,” the source said. “They will ultimately do what’s best for Barron.”

Obama White House decorator Michael Smith told the Washington Post that Kannalikham “joins a very select club and is one of the people who have been fortunate enough to work for first families. As I’ve said many times, every time you move a chair or lamp in the White House, it is part of the fabric of history.”

Richard Branson and Barack and Michelle Obama have been frolicking on Branson’s private Necker Island, and engaging in a friendly competitive kitesurfing contest.

Challenged @barackobama to a kitesurf vs foilboard learning contest – here’s what happened t.co/5hwjOvy2TK pic.twitter.com/wEGSjL2TAr

Wrote Branson in a blog on the Virgin website.

It was a huge honour to be able to invite President Barack and Michelle Obama down to the British Virgin Islands for a complete break after Barack finished his second term as President and the family left the White House…

…Barack started learning to kitesurf on the beach on Necker for two days solid, picking up the basics and flying a kite as if going back to being a child again. Then he went into the water, standing up and getting a feel for the kite. Finally, he put the board at his feet and gave it a go. Being the former president of America, there was lots of security around, but Barack was able to really relax and get into it.

…As you can see in the video, Barack and I both fell many times, but we kept trying again and again and made progress over the days. We were neck and neck until the last run on the last day, when I got up on the foilboard and screamed along for over 50 metres, three feet above the water. I was feeling very pleased with myself, only to look over and see Barack go 100 metres on his kiteboard! I had to doff my cap to him and celebrate his victory.

GLAAD launches new grantmaking program to amplify LGBTQ stories, support content creators

GLAAD launches new grantmaking program to amplify LGBTQ stories, support content creators

Today, when the voices of marginalized communities are speaking out to challenge those who would otherwise silence them, GLAAD launches glaadgrants :  a platform to amplify LGBTQ content creators and their diverse stories.

glaadgrants was established to ensure that innovative, creative and diverse LGBTQ stories in entertainment media are supported with needed completion funding for in-progress works. Additionally, content creators will have guidance from experienced and professional mentors, all in an effort to help them share their vision. GLAAD’s overarching goal is to develop a pipeline of talented LGBTQ content creators that  are prepared and ready to move into the mainstream of Hollywood and be top of mind for entertainment industry studios and networks.

GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis shared that:

“Our vision is to support and inspire content creators to tell stories that accelerate acceptance of LGBTQ people here at home and around the world.  With a special emphasis on under-represented LGBTQ people, GLAAD’s work empowers real people to tell stories and amplify their voices, and glaadgrants is our latest initiative towards that goal.”

Those interested in submitting can visit glaadgrants to learn about criteria for eligibility, submission and application guidelines, as well as FAQs. The deadline for receipt of submissions is 5pm PT on Friday, March 24th, 2017.  There are no entry fees.

Studio Responsibility IndexAccording to GLAAD’s 2016 Studio Responsibility Index, only 17.5% of all major film studio releases in 2015 included LGBTQ-identified characters, with decreased racial diversity over the preceding year. And of the 895 series regular characters expected to appear on broadcast primetime programming within the 2016-2017 season, according to GLAAD’s most recent Where We Are On TV Report, only 4.8% were counted  The expansion into digital platforms, such as Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix, is bringing inclusive and often groundbreaking portrayals of LGBTQ characters, but more is needed.

While GLAAD continues to devote countless hours to meetings with studio and network executives, showrunners, and staff at all levels of the creative process, glaadgrants commits resources to developing a pipeline of new and exciting talent that will be poised to become tomorrow’s LGBTQ leaders in Hollywood.  In addition to financial grants and mentorships provided by industry professionals through this new initiative, grant recipients will also be supported by making sure the entertainment industry is aware of these new voices and knows where to find them.  This is an investment GLAAD makes today for tomorrow’s LGBTQ visionaries.

AmpersandIn addition to glaadgrants, amplifying voices of those who are marginalized and often made to feel invisible is also the focus of GLAAD’s Together Campaign.  Serving as a virtual town square for supporters to receive information on upcoming events, petition discriminatory legislation, amplify real stories of those impacted, and connect across social media, Together unites all marginalized communities; and in unity we declare to resist, persist and prevail against hateful and non-inclusive legislation, policy and rhetoric.
