Director of Gay Conversion Therapy Drama \u2018Boy Erased\u2019 Wishes He Had Chosen Streaming Release Over Theatrical<\/b><\/p>\n

Joel Edgerton, director of the gay<\/a> conversion therapy drama Boy Erased, told Indiewire<\/a> he wishes he had chosen a streaming deal with Netflix over the movie\u2019s standard theatrical release, which generated $11.8 million at the box office, barely enough to cover the film\u2019s $11 million budget. Plus \u2026 no conversation.<\/p>\n

Said Edgerton to Indiewire<\/a>: \u201cWe had a really interesting debate about which way to go. Focus had this incredible track record with putting out these LGBTQ films like \u2018Brokeback\u2019 and \u2018Milk,\u2019 so I felt we were in the right hands. We wanted to create a face-to-face scenario where we\u2019d have face time with audiences and have Q&As and generate discussions. To me, it felt like that was the right way to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Edgerton said that upon reflection he would have preferred the conversation that is generated when the film is released simultaneously everywhere in the world, rather than a city-by-city theatrical rollout: \u201cThe moment you put something on a streaming platform, everybody in every household in all these countries can see it at the exact same time. You don\u2019t get that chatter \u2014 and this was sad for me \u2014 of, \u2018When is this film coming to my country?\u2019 or, \u2018I have to drive five hours to see it,\u2019 or, \u2018I just can\u2019t afford the time and money.’\u201d<\/p>\n
