Christine and the Queens<\/a> (aka H\u00e9lo\u00efse Letissier) accuses Taylor Swift of appropriating queer culture \u201cto sell things\u201d in a new interview with Cosmopolitan<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Said Chris of Swift\u2019s \u201cYou Need to Calm Down\u201d video<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019m conflicted. I guess somewhere, young gay<\/a> men<\/a> might watch that Taylor Swift video<\/a> and feel a sense of relief. Five years on [since she entered the industry] and you can tell that being queer has been glossed out as this super-fancy accessory. You can tell that the queer aesthetic is being used to sell things. The mainstream needs that life because it\u2019s so vibrant. But I think the core of the queer aesthetic cannot be sold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris, who identifies as pansexual, said she has been accused of the same thing: \u201cWhen I changed my name from Christine to Chris on the second album, some people said, \u2018That\u2019s a cool marketing thing you did.\u2019 It was so painful. I\u2019ve been singing\u00a0iT<\/em>\u00a0[an early song, which she\u2019s said is about \u2018wanting to have a dick in order to have an easy life\u2019] for the past five years. It\u2019s never been marketing for me. It\u2019s about jumping into the unknown and saying things loudly.\u201d<\/p>\n
