Matthew Perry Rejected \u2018Friends\u2019 Episode in Which Chandler Snuck into a Gay Bar<\/b><\/p>\n

Writers of the decade-long hit sitcom Friends<\/em> tried out a storyline which had Matthew Perry\u2019s character sneaking into a gay<\/a> bar \u2014 because he liked the tuna melts it served.<\/p>\n

Writer Saul Austerlitz writes about what happened in his book,\u00a0Generation Friends: An Inside Look at the Show that Defined a Television Era,<\/em> the Independent<\/em> reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wrote Austerlitz: \u201cPerry said no, and the story was shelved.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Independent<\/em> notes that the show has often been criticized for its homophobic and sexist jokes and storylines.<\/p>\n

Actress Kathleen Turner, \u00a0who\u00a0played Chandler Bing\u2019s trans<\/a> parent\u00a0on the show, told <\/a>Gay Times<\/a><\/em> in 2018 that she thought the show hadn\u2019t aged well for LGBTQ people<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Said Turner: \u201cHow they approached with me with it, was \u2018would you like to be the first woman<\/a> playing a man<\/a> playing a woman<\/a>?\u2019 I said yes, because there weren\u2019t many drag\/trans<\/a> people\u00a0on television at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gay Times added<\/a>: \u2018During Friends<\/em>\u2019 run, the character was never actually acknowledged as trans<\/a>, and was referred to as either gay<\/a> or a drag queen. She\u00a0was often mocked by the other characters \u2013 especially for her drag show, which was titled\u00a0Viva Las Gaygas.\u00a0\u201cYeah, people thought Charles was just dressing up,\u201d Kathleen added.\u2019<\/p>\n
