Ryan O\u2019Connell: \u201cBeing gay<\/a> is more accepted and understood than being disabled\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Writer, actor, and disability advocate Ryan O\u2019Connell spoke to students at the University of Washington this week<\/a> about the unique struggles he\u2019s faced as someone who is both gay<\/a> and<\/em> disabled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went out with my gay<\/a> mafia and pitched it to all these networks,\u201d O\u2019Connell told the crowd when talking about his series Special<\/em>. \u201cIt was four years of like no, no, and f*ck no.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connell explained that many networks had a hard time wrapping their heads around a show about someone who is both gay<\/a> and<\/em> disabled. (O\u2019Connell\u00a0has cerebral palsy.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI was told \u2018no\u2019 for so long,\u201d he recalled. \u201cThere were so many times where I was like \u2018f*ck this, I wanna quit.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t quit, of course. And, as he explains it, \u201cthen we went to Netflix and they just bought it. It was so weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

It proved to be a wise investment for the network.<\/p>\n

Not only did Special<\/em> receive rave reviews upon its release, but it nabbed four Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series and Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for O\u2019Connell.<\/sup><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing gay<\/a>, in a weird way, is more accepted and understood than being disabled,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think disability is not discussed. There are so many conversations about being gay<\/a>. These chairs are gay<\/a>. I don\u2019t think people know how to talk about [disability].\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

But, O\u2019Connell added, the tides do seem to be shifting. (Thanks, in part, to him.<\/em> Though he\u2019s far too humble to ever admit this.) After Netflix took a chance on him, O\u2019Connell feels more accepted and more grounded than ever.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the first time in 28 years of my life, I was being who I was, and I wasn\u2019t lying about something,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was always either being gay<\/a> or being disabled, and I was finally just me.\u201d<\/p>\n
