A Celebration of VisiBIlity in the Bi+ Community<\/b>

To Basit Shittu, increasing bi<\/a>+ visibility is essential to their work as an activist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a person of color, as a gender non-conforming person\u2026 all my life I\u2019ve just wanted to see myself represented just [the] slightest bit — to not only see myself represented but to be the representation that I wanted to see,\u201d Shittu, a Brooklyn-based artist and cast member of MTV\u2019s \u201cAre You the One?\u201d said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shittu was a part of <\/span>HRC\u2019s Bisexual Awareness Week panel<\/a> on Sept. 19, moderated by HRC Deputy Press Secretary Elliott Kozuch, on bi<\/a>+ visibility in the media. Alongside Shittu, bi<\/a>+ panelists included Advocates for Youth<\/a>\u2019s Khadija Khan, HRC\u2019s Helen Parshall and the National Center for Transgender Equality<\/a>\u2019s Charles Girard.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bi+ community members and advocates joined the evening of celebration to discuss bi<\/a>+ visibility, support bi<\/a>+ artists and address the barriers the community faces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of these obstacles were illuminated by data from the <\/span>2019 Bi+ Youth Report<\/a>, which the HRC Foundation, in partnership with the University of Connecticut, released this week<\/a>. The report found that bi<\/a>+ youth are far less likely to be out about their identities to people in their lives — including family, friends, doctors, teachers and peers — compared to gay<\/a> and lesbian<\/a> youth.\u00a0<\/p>\n
