What is it like to be a bisexual<\/a> man<\/a> living in India?<\/b><\/p>\n

A 36-year-old bisexual<\/a> man<\/a> living with his family in Delhi says \u201cunconventional doesn\u2019t even begin to define my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an article published by GQ<\/em><\/a>, the anonymous man<\/a> writes about what it\u2019s like being bisexual<\/a> in a country where gay<\/a> sex<\/a> was still punishable with life in prison just last year when the country\u2019s Supreme Court passed a landmark judgement decriminalizing Section 377.<\/p>\n

The man<\/a> first realized he was attracted to both women<\/a> and men<\/a> in 2003, when he was still in college, and it freaked him out at first.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cI had to suddenly face the reality that I wasn\u2019t \u2018normal\u2019 anymore,\u201d he writes. \u201cAdd to that, I wasn\u2019t even just gay<\/a>. Being bisexual<\/a> meant that I was a minority within a minority. How would I deal with that?\u201d<\/p>\n

His girlfriend<\/a> at the time dumped him the minute he came out to her. And his friends responded with \u201cunfunny remarks\u201d about bisexuals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can enjoy the best of both worlds, was the common one. You can hook up with as many men<\/a> as you want and then get married to a girl<\/a>, some suggested. There was a fair bit of \u2018it\u2019s a phase\u2019 as well. Basically, no one understood my true self. Most still don\u2019t, even after close to two decades.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man<\/a> says he continues to struggle with feeling lonely and misunderstood. Dating is especially challenging.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been terribly unfortunate in that department,\u201d he writes. \u201cMost men<\/a> and women<\/a> I\u2019ve liked, have backed off. \u2026\u00a0The men<\/a> worry that eventually I\u2019d want to get married and go for a woman<\/a>, and the women<\/a> are scared that I\u2019ll just turn gay<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

His family has also had a hard time accepting him for who he is.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cMy parents are still in denial about my sexuality,\u201d he explains. \u201cYes, even after all these years. They\u2019re quite hopeful that one day, I will go back to being straight\u2013even if that happens when I\u2019m 40, or 50. Talk about optimism!\u201d<\/p>\n

He continues, \u201cEven members of the LGBTQ+ community aren\u2019t particularly affable, once they realize you\u2019re not just gay<\/a>. There are a lot of crusaders for homosexuality but how many bisexuals<\/a> do you know who\u2019re fighting for their rights?\u201d<\/p>\n

Being bisexual<\/a>, the man<\/a> notes, really isn\u2019t that strange or difficult to understand. So why do people continue to act like it is?<\/p>\n

\u201cJust like a heterosexual person is attracted to the opposite gender, a bisexual<\/a> person is attracted to both genders. That\u2019s all there is to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continues, \u201cAnd for all those who believe that bisexuals<\/a> are having all the fun, I wish you\u2019d understand just how difficult it is to even go out on a date. Most people turn you down before they\u2019ve even met you because they can\u2019t deal with your orientation. That\u2019s certainly not fun!\u201d<\/p>\n
