{"id":94744,"date":"2019-09-01T09:05:31","date_gmt":"2019-09-01T13:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/hrc-observes-national-suicide-prevention-awarness-month-2019\/"},"modified":"2019-09-01T09:05:31","modified_gmt":"2019-09-01T13:05:31","slug":"hrc-observes-national-suicide-prevention-awarness-month-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/hrc-observes-national-suicide-prevention-awarness-month-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"HRC Observes National Suicide Prevention Awarness Month 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>HRC Observes National Suicide Prevention Awarness Month 2019<\/b><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/images\/made\/images\/remote\/https_assets2.hrc.org\/files\/images\/blog\/Candle2-1600x900_640_360.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Trigger warning:<\/em><\/strong><em> This post contains mention of suicide.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This September, HRC observes National Sucide Prevention Awareness Month, reaffirming our commitment to supporting the well-being of LGBTQ youth who often feel alone or hopeless simply because of who they are.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Factors such as bullying and harassment, family rejection and neglect have contributed to the deaths of countless, including LGBTQ youth like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/entry\/new-campaign-aims-to-stop-bullying-on-day-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Clementi<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/following-jamel-myles-death-we-must-address-the-critical-need-to-support-lg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamel Myles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/remembering-leelah-one-year-later\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leelah Alcorn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/the-tragic-death-of-her-son-compelled-this-mom-to-fight-on-behalf-of-lgbtq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sergio Urrego<\/a>. These risks are compounded for LGBTQ youth of color at the intersections of racism, transphobia, biphobia and homophobia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization reports that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/suicide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">second-leading cause of death<\/a> among youth ages 15 to 29 is suicide. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/resources\/preventing-suicide\/facts-about-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Project estimates that attempted suicide<\/a> rates among LGB youth is five times higher than that of their straight peers. Additionally, a study from the <a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/142\/4\/e20174218?sso=1&#038;sso_redirect_count=1&#038;nfstatus=401&#038;nftoken=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000&#038;nfstatusdescription=ERROR%3A+No+local+token\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a> found alarming levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/new-study-reveals-shocking-rates-of-attempted-suicide-among-trans-adolescen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">attempted suicide among trans youth<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>HRC and the University of Connecticut\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/2018-lgbtq-youth-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LGBTQ Youth Report<\/a> found alarming trends among more than 12,000 respondents, ranging in age from 13 to 17:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More than 70% reported feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness in the past week;<\/li>\n<li>Only 26% of youth said they always feel safe in their school classrooms &#8212; and just 5% said that all of their teachers and school staff are supportive of LGBTQ people;<\/li>\n<li>Just 31% of <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/offers.cam4tracking.com\/aff_c?offer_id=125&#38;aff_id=2778&#38;source=gfcsb\">trans<\/a> youth surveyed said that they can express themselves in a way that completely reflects their gender identity in school;<\/li>\n<li>Only 11% of youth of color surveyed believe their racial or ethnic group is regarded positively in the U.S.;<\/li>\n<li>68% of <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">bisexual<\/a> youth report being teased or treated poorly at school because of their sexual orientation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Addressing these startling statistics starts with schools and communities alike working to foster safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ young people.<\/p>\n<p>Parents and families can start by learning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/play-to-win-improving-the-lives-of-lgbtq-youth-in-sports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the facts<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/just-as-they-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">educating themselves<\/a> about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/2018-lgbtq-youth-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">issues that impact LGBTQ youth<\/a>.
