Joel Schumacher Says He\u2019s Had Sex with 10,000 or 20,000 Men: \u2018It\u2019s Not [Amazing] for a Gay Male, Because It\u2019s Available\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

In a wide ranging interview with Vulture<\/a>, director Joel Schumacher talked about his career, his movies, stars he has worked with, the AIDS crisis, Fire Island, and his sexual history as a gay<\/a> man<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Asked if he\u2019s ever guessed the number of sexual partners he\u2019s had, Schumacher responded that \u201cIt would be in the double-digit thousands, but that is not unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schumacher pinned it around 10,000 or 20,000, saying \u201cIt\u2019s not [amazing] for a gay<\/a> male<\/a>, because it\u2019s available.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schumacher said he had a number of \u201clost years\u201d on Fire Island between 1965 and 1970 and shot liquid Methedrine, \u201cthe mother drug of meth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re just starving for sex<\/a> all the time,\u201d said Schumacher. \u201cEvery drug, in my mind, was a pathway to sex<\/a>. So was alcohol. There was an adventure going on, and sex<\/a> would be the cherry on that sundae.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schumacher talked about the sadness of the AIDS crisis and how reckless he was, even after testing negative for HIV: \u2018After [the negative test] I think I got wilder. What my psychiatrist said that was really fascinating was, \u201cNo, you are desperately afraid of death. It\u2019s like swimming out further and further every night in the ocean and seeing if you can get back, and when you get home, it\u2019s like, \u2018I f**ked death again.\u2019\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n

Schumacher also talked about his movie Batman & Robin<\/em>, and assertions that he made the franchise \u201cgayer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Said Schumacher: \u201cIf I wasn\u2019t gay<\/a>, they would never say those things. \u2026 There\u2019s always been this thing about Batman and Robin being gay<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
