The Tony Award and Grammy winner just made history as the first-ever out-gay African-American man ever nominated for Best Actor in a Drama at the Emmys<\/a>, courtesy of his magnificent turn as the ballroom emcee on\u00a0Pose<\/em><\/a>. For Porter, the nomination adds momentum to an already soaring career fueled by television roles on shows like Law & Order: SVU<\/em> and\u00a0American Horror Story<\/em>, as well as a stage career that encompassed parts in\u00a0Angels In America<\/em>, and the original Broadway cast of\u00a0Kinky Boots<\/em><\/a>, for which he won his Tony and Grammy Awards.<\/p>\n

Queerty snagged some very precious time with Porter just one day before the\u00a0Pose\u00a0<\/em>Season 2 finale to talk about his rocketing rise, his work on the show, and some of his notorious fashion choices. Pose<\/em> airs Tuesday night on FX.<\/p>\n

QUEERTY: So you\u2019ve hit a new career-high.<\/strong><\/p>\n

PORTER: I know!<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the state of your life like now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You know, it\u2019s very busy. It\u2019s very packed. Every day is scheduled and packed with really amazing, astonishing, creative, moving artistic things that put good energy out into the world. That\u2019s why I\u2019m an artist. That\u2019s what we get to do, that\u2019s what we get to be. It\u2019s exciting. It\u2019s exciting to see your dreams come true.<\/p>\n

And you get to live<\/a><\/i> them coming true.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah!<\/p>\n

And let it be said, you\u2019ve earned it. You\u2019re doing some amazing work this year with Pose<\/i>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pray has the most dynamic character arc this season.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I think so, in that he becomes an activist. He falls in love.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He becomes more gender-conscious in the ballroom.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s a dynamic arc. What\u2019s been the most challenging part of this season?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You know\u2026<\/p>\n

[Slight pause]<\/i><\/p>\n

None of it.<\/p>\n

None of it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The challenging part for me is the schedule. The challenging part for me is finding time for my own life. You know what I mean? I have no time for my life. I\u2019m married now, so it\u2019s like the challenge is about scheduling. The biggest challenge for me, if you\u2019re talking about the work, is the love scenes.<\/p>\n

Really?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t done a love scene ever. This is what I\u2019ll say, and this is a very good question: being a leading man<\/a>. That\u2019s a challenge. I went from entering this process as a character actor to Ryan Murphy<\/a> and the gang turning me into a leading man<\/a> and changing the idea of what a leading man<\/a> can look like. That is challenging for me being a person who has, in my 30-year career ever been that. I\u2019ve never been the object of anyone\u2019s affection in 30 years. The first romantic kiss I ever had was last season in episode <\/a>eight.<\/p>\n

Seriously?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes honey!<\/p>\n

That\u2019s mind-boggling to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You know they cut our d*cks off\u2026<\/p>\n

[Laughter]<\/i><\/p>\n

You know when they first started telling stories about gay<\/a> people they cut our d*cks off. Then when we started having love stories it was always the white boys<\/a>. You don\u2019t see black men<\/a> loving each other.<\/p>\n

Not nearly enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n

No. It was a challenge for me getting naked<\/a>. Getting naked<\/a> and showing that part of myself was a challenge.<\/p>\n

In the literal sense?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. It\u2019s very clinical. The acting comes in trying to make it look natural and sexy. To me, I had been waiting my whole life to be given that kind of material. My. Whole. Life<\/i>. You know, they exercise every muscle I have. I read these scripts and I just weep. I\u2019m like thank you Lord. Thank you.<\/i><\/p>\n

Speaking of, here were you when you found out about your Emmy nomination?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was in P-Town for vacation.<\/a><\/p>\n

Marvelous.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We were going to have people over, so I was marinating chicken\u2026with the phone beside me going if the phone starts buzzing, that\u2019s good news.<\/i><\/p>\n

Everyone is so excited that you\u2019re nominated right now: the first out-gay<\/a> African-American man<\/a> nominated for Best Actor in a Drama.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Me too.<\/p>\n

And everyone\u2019s excited to see what you\u2019re gonna wear to the Emmys. Since Pose<\/i> has hit, you\u2019ve become a style icon<\/a> and a style activist, if that\u2019s even a thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I made it a thing.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s about time somebody did. I read a story this morning about your stylist Sam Ratelle, and how he says the two of you are working to smash the idea of what constitutes male<\/a> or female<\/a> fashion. What is so empowering about that for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, you know, from the minute that I could comprehend thought\u2014so like five years old\u2014my masculinity was in question. We, as queer people, go through our whole lives trying to live<\/a> up to or being held up to a masculinity standard that our society places on us. I was in those chains until about seven years ago when Kinky Boots<\/i> happened. And when I finally let myself go and do the very thing I was put on Earth to do and put on that dress and those pumps and that make-up to show the world what a human being looks like, it changed everything. I was always told that side of me was unproducable, was unmarketable and my liability.<\/p>\n

Wow.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And I chose myself even when everyone else said I was wrong. Now here I am on the other side, and the world has cracked open to me because<\/i> actually did choose myself and my authenticity. I can\u2019t now go hide. I have to show up and do something with that platform. I had no idea that I wanted to play with gender fashion. It just kind of evolved. After Kinky Boots<\/i> I was comfortable doing it and I had no shame about it anymore. I was going on a recording artist tour and trying to find a new look. I came across Rick Owens<\/a>. I went in the store and it was all gender-fluid. There were dresses and thick rock & roll platform boots, and I was like this is where I want to be<\/i>. So that\u2019s where it started. It\u2019s really about a cisgender gay<\/a> man<\/a> choosing to wear a dress. I don\u2019t identify as \u201cshe.\u201d I don\u2019t identify as \u201cthey\/them.\u201d I am a \u201che\/him,\u201d and as a man<\/a>, I am choosing to wear a dress, just like women<\/a> choose to put on pants.<\/p>\n

Sure. So when you started doing this, did you have people saying \u201cDude, tone it down\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No. Not really. There were fashion designers and fashion houses that won\u2019t dip into this side of the conversation. They\u2019ve made themselves very clear when we would request male<\/a> and female<\/a> things they just wouldn\u2019t answer, or they\u2019d send over two pieces of boy<\/a> sh*t. It was like we don\u2019t think he should be wearing that<\/i>. That\u2019s called silencing, and I have seen this before. I\u2019m almost 50, so it\u2019s all good. I\u2019m going to go with the people that get me. I\u2019m going to go with my vision. I\u2019m going to do what I want to do. It\u2019s my life. I knew it was a good choice because it\u2019s a freeing choice for me, know what I mean?<\/p>\n

Well when it comes to the masculinity issue, you\u2019ve spoken quite candidly about the double standard of straight men<\/a> playing gay<\/a> characters and winning all this praise for their \u201ccourage\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes.<\/p>\n

Whereas gay<\/a> men<\/a> who can\u2019t get cast as straight men<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Or in gay<\/a> parts.<\/p>\n

Or in gay<\/a> parts, because everyone now wants the \u201cbrave\u201d praise.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Right.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m curious. In your experience, where is that attitude rooted? I\u2019ve spoken to so many actors, directors, writers, even studio executives that don\u2019t see the problem of casting a gay<\/a> man<\/a>. So is it the agents? Managers? Lawyers?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know, and quite frankly I don\u2019t give a f*ck. I don\u2019t care where it comes from anymore. The only conversation I\u2019m having is it\u2019s over, we\u2019re done with that<\/i>. That\u2019s the conversation I\u2019m interested in having. I know what it used<\/i> to be. To hear you say directors and writers and executives don\u2019t have a problem with it, that\u2019s encouraging. That\u2019s good news to me. I just think the conversation is new. We\u2019ve cracked it open, and now it\u2019s up to us as artists that live<\/a> in that world to make sure the conversation never quells.<\/p>\n

Absolutely.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ok, last question. I talked to your friend Jerry Mitchell<\/a> recently. He hinted at some possibilities of a Kinky Boots<\/i> movie. He said he wanted to do it with you.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah.<\/p>\n

Would you be open to doing it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. Of course I want to do it.<\/p>\n

Are there serious talks?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t been in any talks with anybody. So they have to call<\/a>. I\u2019ve finally gotten to the place where I\u2019m famous enough that I can play my part. They won\u2019t go and cast Bruno Mars or Will Smith.<\/p>\n

Lord save us. Will Smith in drag?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well you know they like to do that. They need a movie star, but now I\u2019m on my way to being a movie star, Praise Him!<\/p>\n

Damn right.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019m excited. I\u2019m excited whenever it comes around to do it, and I think it would be an awesome musical movie.<\/p>\n
