{"id":94252,"date":"2019-08-20T18:25:51","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T22:25:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/raising-awareness-and-creating-inclusive-spaces-for-lgbtq-muslims\/"},"modified":"2019-08-20T18:25:51","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T22:25:51","slug":"raising-awareness-and-creating-inclusive-spaces-for-lgbtq-muslims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/raising-awareness-and-creating-inclusive-spaces-for-lgbtq-muslims\/","title":{"rendered":"Raising Awareness and Creating Inclusive Spaces for LGBTQ Muslims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Raising Awareness and Creating Inclusive Spaces for LGBTQ Muslims<\/b><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/images\/made\/images\/remote\/https_assets2.hrc.org\/files\/images\/blog\/ImamDaayieeAbdullah-1600x900_640_360.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>As one of only five openly <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">gay<\/a> imams in the world, Imam <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daayiee_Abdullah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daayiee Abdullah<\/a> is using his visibility to raise awareness and build a culture of acceptance for LGBTQ Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that visibility is always important for those who have not considered or have not thought of the possibilities of a Muslim who is both religious and <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">gay<\/a>,\u201d Abdullah, the executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/meccainstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MECCA Institute<\/a>, told HRC. \u201cIt is important for people to see people like themselves within their religious context. It gives them a point of reference and someone they can talk to because a lot of questions frequently go unanswered by the traditionalist system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abdullah, who has been working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/explore\/topic\/religion-faith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HRC Foundation\u2019s faith and religion<\/a> team for nearly 20 years, is leading a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/events\/sexuality-gender-and-family-in-the-muslim-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workshop<\/a> hosted by HRC and the MECCA Institute on &#8220;Sexuality, Gender, and Family in the Muslim Community&#8221; in Houston, Texas on August 31. The workshop will take place near <a href=\"https:\/\/isnacon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISNACON<\/a>, a national convention for Muslim Americans working toward social change.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop will provide an overview of sexuality within the Muslim community, emphasizing Muslim families and their relationships with LGBTQ children.
