Yesterday, Donald Trump tweeted<\/a>, \u201cCurt Schilling, a great pitcher and patriot, is considering a run for Congress in Arizona. Terrific!\u201d<\/p>\n

Schilling hasn\u2019t actually announced that he\u2019s running for congress, mind you. But anyone who has ever Googled his name knows that he\u2019s a former Boston Red Sox player who turned into a transphobic sports commentator and far-right conspiracy theorist and Islamophobe \u2014 exactly the sort of man<\/a> Trump would love<\/em> in Congress.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a quick look at Schilling\u2019s public record, shall we?<\/p>\n

Schilling was always known as a \u201cconservative loudmouth\u201d<\/a> who\u2019d call<\/a> into Boston radio shows in the early 2000s to shill<\/em> for antigay President George W. Bush. (See what we did there?) In 2007, he launched his own political blog in which he wrote about\u00a0being a Christian<\/a> and\u00a0\u201cwhy the media sucks<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts died in 2009, Schilling briefly considered running as an independent, stating that he was anti-abortion, against gay<\/a> marriage, in support of lower taxes and \u201cabsolutely for the 2nd Amendment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, in 2010, ESPN hired him as a sports commentator, but it fired him in 2016<\/a> for a tweet comparing Muslims to Nazis<\/a> and another rabidly transphobic tweet<\/a> arguing against trans<\/a>-inclusive bathroom access while presenting a caricature of trans<\/a> femininity meant to elicit disgust.<\/p>\n

Schilling is also an avid collector of Nazi memorabilia<\/a>, though he says \u201c[It\u2019s] not a Nazi collection. It\u2019s a collection of World War II stuff.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Since Trump\u2019s tweet, Schilling has spilt a lot of digital ink on Twitter<\/a> defending his own conservative viewpoints, blaming the media and politicians for his failures and explaining why kids shouldn\u2019t be allowed to express their own gender identity<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In short, it\u2019s not hard to see why Trump likes the guy<\/a> so much.<\/p>\n
