Arizona County Supervisor Ron Gould: \u2018Sinful\u2019 Gay People Die Young Because of Their Sexual Orientation<\/b><\/p>\n

Mohave County Supervisor and former Arizona state senator Ron Gould is under fire for remarks he made to the local newspaper Kingman Daily Miner<\/em><\/a> (subscription).<\/p>\n

Gould told the newspaper that gay<\/a> men<\/a> have a life expectancy of 42 years.<\/p>\n

Asked if he believes they die younger because of their sexual orientation, Gould replied, \u201cThat\u2019s why they die. We all have our sins, but we should try to suppress them. Alcohol is harmful, too, but we don\u2019t see groups promoting alcoholism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gould also said that marriage is not a civil right for gay<\/a> people, adding, \u201cIt used to be \u2018tolerate us,\u2019; now it\u2019s \u2018accept us.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Of the \u2018gays<\/a> die at 42\u2019 claim, the <\/a>Phoenix New Times<\/a><\/em> writes<\/a>, \u201cGould probably got the number from an unscientific study conducted by the anti-gay<\/a> Family Research Institute in 1994. Researcher Paul Cameron\u00a0\u2014\u00a0who was terminated from the American Psychological Association<\/a>\u00a0over his research methods\u00a0\u2014\u00a0counted obituaries in newspapers serving the LGBTQ community and allegedly found an average life span of 43 for gay<\/a> men<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
