Popular radio host who came out on live<\/a> air last month says his family has quit talking to him<\/b><\/p>\n

Iain Lee is a popular radio host, comedian, and reality TV personality for the U.K. Last month, he\u00a0made a big reveal about his sexuality.<\/p>\n

After surviving a bad car accident, Lee explained, he began seeing a psychotherapist, who helped him realize he was bisexual<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s helped me realize that I\u2019m probably bisexual<\/a>. So, I guess, I\u2019m coming out,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is me coming out, I suppose, is how they would call<\/a> it, at the age of 46, and I\u2019m terrified by it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to talk about how he first began experimenting with \u201csignificantly older men<\/a>\u201d when he was a teenager, though he\u2019s since come to identify those experiences as sexual abuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been reminded of a lot of stuff that kind of started when I was about 14 or 15 years old, and would involve me basically engaged in sexual acts with significantly older men<\/a>,\u201d Lee recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis went on for quite a while, and I\u2019ve always had a lot of confusion around it, because I started putting myself in these positions so that these things would happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, he says, revealing that part about himself to the world has cost him his relationship with several family members.<\/p>\n

In a heartbreaking social media post this week, Lee said he\u2019s been having difficultly sleeping after certain members of his family have severed ties with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cSlept badly,\u201d he tweeted on Wednesday. \u201cFull of resentment at how some family members have completely cut me off after I told my story of being abused as an 8 and 14 year old and also about my sexuality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cChildish, disappointing and very sad. I expected more from family when strangers have been so kind.\u201d<\/p>\n

During a recent appearance on Good Morning Britain<\/em>, Lee talked openly about the \u201cshame\u201d he used to feel about both his abuse and about being bisexual<\/a>, but he said he\u2019s in \u201cin a great place\u201d since coming out to the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has lifted a huge weight and nearly everyone has been brilliant and it\u2019s not a big thing, it\u2019s not like I am now going to go around and start queening up and going out with loads of guys<\/a> and stuff,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not what it\u2019s about, it\u2019s about saying I have done this stuff in the past that I have had a lot of shame around and actually I don\u2019t need to be ashamed about it. I am in a great place. My life has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sadly, Lee\u2019s experience with his family is not uncommon.<\/p>\n

A 2016 study<\/a> by Columbia University\u2019s Mailman School of Public Health found that many bisexual<\/a> men<\/a> remain closeted for fear of being labeled as gay<\/a>, becoming targets of violence, or being disowned by their families.<\/p>\n

Another 2016 study<\/a> by Vanderbilt University found that bisexuals<\/a> reported the highest levels of psychological distress among the LGB community, with much of this due to feeling ostracized and isolated from friends and family.<\/p>\n
