Joshua Rush \u2014 the 17-year-old actor who played Cyrus Goodman, the first Disney character ever to say the words \u201cI\u2019m gay<\/a>\u201d \u2014 recently came out as bisexual<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You may recall that in October 2017 Rush participated in the Disney Channel\u2019s first-ever coming-out scene when his character in the pre-teen<\/a> drama series Andi Mack<\/em> revealed his crush on a boy<\/a>. Although the show subsequently left Goodman\u2019s sexuality mostly unexplored, in February 2019 his character actually uttered the words \u201cI\u2019m gay\u201d<\/a> in another groundbreaking first for the channel.<\/p>\n

But Rush himself had never publicly declared his own same-sex<\/a> attraction \u2026 until just yesterday.<\/p>\n

In a Twitter thread<\/a>, he wrote:<\/p>\n

first! i win! it\u2019s me. i\u2019m bi<\/a>. And now that I\u2019ve said that, I have a few things to rant about. There are more important things to talk about than me liking a whole bunch of genders, but I do want to share a few things with you guys<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I saw so many of you watch Cyrus come out and said \u201cHey! I can be me!\u201d<\/p>\n

How ironic, isn\u2019t it, that me, playing that character, never had mustered up that courage?<\/p>\n

Instead of feeling the courage to tell you today that I am an out and proud bisexual<\/a> man<\/a> because of the character I played for four years, I feel that courage thinking of all of you, who felt emboldened by Cyrus to come out.<\/p>\n

I had a close friend of mine come out to me in fifth grade. FIFTH GRADE! That was well before I had any clue of my own identity and orientation. I suffered with some level of my own internalized homophobia even while playing the first openly gay<\/a> character on Disney Channel.<\/p>\n

I stuffed the existential crisis of talking about my sexual orientation into a box in my mind for years. Today, I release it into the world.<\/p>\n

Being bi<\/a> isn\u2019t all of my identity, nor is it the most important part of my identity. Bi erasure and issues like it are important, but trans<\/a> women<\/a> of color still have a life expectancy of THIRTY FIVE YEARS and that is absolutely unacceptable \u2026<\/p>\n

Thank you to you for giving me the courage to know who I am and tell you this today. Happy 20biteen!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He then encouraged his followers to donate to The Trevor Project and GLAAD and to read GLAAD\u2019s page on bisexuality<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rush\u2019s coming out and education on bi<\/a> issues are great for other bi<\/a> people, for visibility\u2019s sake and to help reduce biphobia.<\/p>\n

In a 2018 profile<\/a> of Dr. Brian Dodge, a lead researcher on bisexuality and the health disparities they face, Dodge said \u201cthe vast majority\u201d of biphobia he faces comes from gay<\/a> and lesbian<\/a> people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A 2013 Pew survey found<\/a> that bisexual<\/a> people come out at rates three times less often than gay<\/a> men<\/a>, have four times fewer LGBTQ-identified friends than gay<\/a> men<\/a> and report higher levels of societal mistrust than gay<\/a> men<\/a>. This is because of \u201cmonosexism\u201d \u2014 prejudice against those who are attracted to more than one gender \u2014and negative stereotypes that cast bi<\/a> people as confused, deceitful, ultra-slutty or trying to benefit from \u201cstraight\/passing privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a result, research suggests that bi<\/a> people stay closeted because of the discrimination they face<\/a> from other queer people and face more health disparities and mental illness<\/a> than gay<\/a> people.<\/p>\n

By education people on bi<\/a> issues, Rush is doing his part to help reduce anti-bi<\/a> stigma while possibly saving a few queer youngsters\u2019 lives in the process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
