Gay son of \u201cStraight Pride\u201d organizer speaks out against his homophobic mother<\/b><\/p>\n

Matthew Mason, the gay<\/a> son of Mylinda Mason, one of the co-organizers of a Straight Pride event planned for later this month in Modesto, California, is speaking out against his homophobic mother.<\/p>\n

Last month, flyers for the event began circulating around town\u00a0encouraging residents to \u201cJoin us to celebrate heterosexuality, masculinity, femininity, babies\u2013born and unborn\u2013western civilization, our wonderful country, Christianity\u2013Celebrate Life!\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Mason says he will speak before the City Council this Wednesday in hopes of getting the event shut down.<\/p>\n

Mason worries the hate rally will incite violence after members from the local chapter of the Proud Boys, the domestic terrorist group responsible for the 2017 hate rally in Charlottesville that resulted in a car being driven into a crowd of counter-protestors, killing a woman<\/a> and injuring several others, said they planned to attend.<\/p>\n

The event\u2019s other co-founder, Don Grundmann, has a long history of promoting hate, founding several antigay groups, including the National Straight Pride Coalition and Citizens Against Perversion.<\/p>\n

In an interview last month, Grundmann told reporters, \u201cWe\u2019re going to change the cultural tide and make it, such things as gender fluidity and transgender, we\u2019re going to associate them with what they are: sick and evil ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want hate in Modesto,\u201d 28-year-old Mason, who was adopted as a baby and came out when he was 19 but became estranged from his mother a few years ago, says. \u201cI am making sure Modesto is not a place for hate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mason is also helping to organize a candlelight vigil before the Wednesday\u2019s council meeting to protest the straight pride event.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, his mom denies being in tolerant and simply says she has an \u201copposing view\u201d from her estranged son.<\/p>\n

The \u201cintolerance does not come from our side,\u201d Mylinda Mason insists. \u201cWe are not happy they are going to try to shut down our side and deny us peaceable assembly. It\u2019s obvious we have two opposing views. It\u2019s the other side that wants the opposing view shut down. It\u2019s not our side.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthew Mason says that if the event happens, he doubts it will attract many people, despite organizers saying they expect at least 500 attendees.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fully expecting they will have a small, pitiful turnout,\u201d he says. \u201cThey are a fringe group.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, his mom says she still loves her son despite their obvious differences.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say it\u2019s heartbreaking,\u201d she says of their fractured relationship. \u201cAny parent feels this way.\u201d<\/p>\n
