Mario Lopez on Wednesday apologized after remarks he made last month about transgender kids and their parents\u00a0were brought to light<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Said Lopez in a statement: \u201cThe comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were. I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lopez also missed the latest taping of Extra<\/em>, which he hosts, Deadline reports<\/a>: \u201cNo explanation was given for Lopez\u2019s absence from today\u2019s show, although\u00a0Extra<\/em>hosts Renee Bargh and Tanika Ray addressed the controversy by interviewing GLAAD director Anthony Ramos and Dr Johanna Olson Kennedy, an expert on trans<\/a> youth development at Children\u2019s Hospital Los Angeles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Extra<\/em> producers also released a statement<\/a>: \u201cWhile we have enjoyed a long relationship with Mario Lopez, who we know to be a caring person, the opinions he expressed in this interview do not reflect those of\u00a0Extra<\/em>. Lopez made the remarks in an interview with pro-Trump conservative Candace Owens.<\/p>\n

Owens brought up what she said was a \u201cweird trend\u201d of celebrities acknowledging their child\u2019s gender identity, citing Charlize Theron as an example.<\/p>\n

Said Owens: \u201cI\u2019ve had children say they were mermaids. I\u2019ve had children say they could fly. I am trying to understand this new Hollywood mentality where they just think their children now have the mental authority and clarity\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Lopez agreed: \u201cI am trying to understand it myself, and please don\u2019t lump me into that whole [group of celebs]. I\u2019m kind of blown away too. Look, I\u2019m never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids obviously and I think if you come from a place of love, you really can\u2019t go wrong but at the same time, my God, if you\u2019re three years old and you\u2019re saying you\u2019re feeling a certain way or you think you\u2019re a boy<\/a> or a girl<\/a> or whatever the case may be, I just think it\u2019s dangerous as a parent to make that determination then, well, \u2018OK, then you\u2019re going to be a boy<\/a> or girl<\/a>,\u2019 whatever the case may be \u2026 It\u2019s sort of alarming and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on..\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me I just see depression,\u201d added Owens. \u201cYou can\u2019t make a decision about your sexuality when you\u2019re three years old.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re a kid \u2026 you don\u2019t know anything about sexuality yet,\u201d Lopez agreed. \u201cYou\u2019re just a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Owens accused celebs like Theron of \u201cnarcissism\u201d and \u201cvirtue signaling\u201d for respecting their kids\u2019 gender identities.<\/p>\n

Added Lopez: \u201cI think parents need to allow their kids to be kids but at the same time, you gotta be the adult in the situation. Pause with that and \u2014 I think the formative years is when you start having those discussions and really start making these \u2018declarations.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
