Oliver Stone: \u2018Vladimir Putin is Not Anti-Gay, Nor am I\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

Director Oliver Stone took to his Facebook in response to outrage over the transcript<\/a> of an interview with Vladimir Putin released by the Kremlin in which Stone complained about gender identities and said that Russia\u2019s ban on gay<\/a> propaganda was a \u201csensible law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Said Stone to Putin according to the transcript: \u201cAs\u00a0you know, I\u2019ve been very rebel all my\u00a0life. Still am. And\u00a0I\u00a0have to\u00a0tell you, I\u2019m shocked by\u00a0some of\u00a0the\u00a0behaviours and\u00a0the\u00a0thinking of\u00a0the\u00a0new generation. It takes so much for\u00a0granted. And\u00a0so much of\u00a0the\u00a0argument, so much of\u00a0the\u00a0thinking, so much of\u00a0the\u00a0newspaper, television commentaries about gender, people identify themselves, and\u00a0social media, this and\u00a0that, I\u2019m male<\/a>, I\u2019m female<\/a>, I\u2019m transgender, I\u2019m cisgender. It goes on\u00a0forever, and\u00a0there is a\u00a0big fight about who is who. It seems like we miss the\u00a0bigger point.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey live<\/a> too well,\u201d replied Putin. \u201cThey have nothing to\u00a0think about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, but it\u2019s not a\u00a0healthy culture,\u201d added Stone, who continued, \u201cYears ago when we were talking about homosexuality, you said that in\u00a0Russia we don\u2019t propagate it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Replied Putin: \u201cNot exactly. We have a\u00a0law banning propaganda among minors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, that\u2019s the\u00a0one I\u2019m talking about,\u201d interjected Stone. \u201cIt seems like maybe that\u2019s a\u00a0sensible law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Days after the interview was released, Stone released a response to anger over the remarks, claiming that neither he nor Putin is homophobic.<\/p>\n

Said Stone: \u2018As to gay<\/a>\/LGBTQ beliefs in Russia, again much misunderstood. Mr. Putin made himself clear in \u201cThe Putin Interviews\u201d \u2014 he\u2019s not anti-gay<\/a>\/LGBTQ. Nor am I. Have another look at \u201cAlexander,\u201d for which we took a beating in 2004. Beyond the Hephaestion story in the sexuality department, I prominently featured Alexander\u2019s love for the Persian eunuch Bagoas, certainly an example of a third sex<\/a> and emblematic of Alexander\u2019s world vision, which I much admired. Do not bring American expectations to Russian life any more than you expect Iran, Korea, Venezuela, or China to follow our political or social demands.\u2019<\/p>\n
