Earlier this week, Mike Pence hosted a fundraiser<\/a> for the Republican Governors Association at the gay<\/a>-owned Caribou Club in Aspen, Colorado. Entry to the event was $35,000 per couple<\/a> and, in the end, the fundraiser pulled in a total of $700,000.<\/p>\n

Now, the local sheriff\u2019s department says Pence and his team have stiffed them on the $24,000 security bill.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a SWAT team from Garfield County here that I want to see get reimbursed,\u201d Sheriff Joe DiSalvo says. \u201cWe had Carbondale officers here that I want to see get reimbursed. They don\u2019t have this kind of money. I don\u2019t have this kind of money.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Pence, who was in town for less than 24 hours, required 64 police officers, who worked a total of 20 hours each, totaling 519 hours.<\/p>\n

\u201cOut of those 64, 14 were state troopers, and we don\u2019t have a responsibility to pay them,\u201d DiSalvo explains. \u201cBut the 50 other cops that were here are all on the county dime.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adding insult to injury, DiSalvo says his calls<\/a> to Pence\u2019s senior political adviser Marty Obst have gone totally ignored.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first talked to [Obst] before the visit, he was all smiles and grins,\u201d DiSalvo says. \u201cBut I know how this works: They put you on hold until they leave and then they don\u2019t talk to you again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has not returned a single phone call<\/a> in two days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Requiring taxpayers to foot the security bill for private campaign events is not<\/em> standard protocol and DiSalvo says the whole situation has been very \u201cdisappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess the whole thing is generally just somewhat disappointing to me,\u201d he laments. \u201cYou raise $700,000 in an hour, you should be able to pitch in to support the community that made you feel welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n
