Pastor refuses dying man<\/a> a funeral because his son is gay<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

A 71-year-old man<\/a> who is currently lying on his deathbed was told by his local pastor that he couldn\u2019t have his funeral at his childhood church because he produced a gay<\/a> son.<\/p>\n

The son, Jessie Goodman, says his dying father\u2019s last wish is to have his funeral at Lee\u2019s Chapel Baptist Church in Sweetwater, Tennessee, and he wants Jessie to sing the hymn \u201cThe Anchor Holds\u201d at the service.<\/p>\n

The church holds special meaning his dad because it was his family\u2019s church growing up.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

But when Jessie contacted the church to start making arrangements, Pastor Jay Scruggs told him absolutely positively not.<\/p>\n

According to local media outlets, Scruggs denied Jessie\u2019s father\u2019s request because Jessie is engaged to another man<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Yes, you read that correctly. Scruggs won\u2019t permit Jessie\u2019s heterosexual<\/em> father to have his funeral at his church because his son<\/em> is gay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re punishing my dad for a lifestyle choice I\u2019ve made,\u201d Jessie tells WTVC<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s not me up there in a casket. It\u2019s him.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Scuggs reportedly told Jessie that \u201cas long as I was going to take part in any way, [my father] could not have his service there.\u201d<\/p>\n

So technically, his father\u00a0could<\/em> have his funeral at the church, but Jessie couldn\u2019t attend.<\/p>\n

According to Jessie, his dying father, who is also a pastor, didn\u2019t take the news well.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had a very hurt look on his face when we told him that,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Church member Daryl Morrow tells local media that he believes Jessie\u2019s father should be allowed to have his funeral at the church and that Jessie should be able to attend; however, he thinks Jessie\u2019s fiancee, Brandon, shouldn\u2019t be allowed inside the venue.<\/p>\n

When asked for comment, Scruggs told reporters he wouldn\u2019t talk to them under\u00a0after<\/em> Jessie\u2019s father is in his grave.<\/p>\n

Jessie\u2019s father is still alive, but the family says he only has \u201ca few days left.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
