LGBTQ Rights Activist Targeted by \u2018Saw\u2019-Inspired \u2018Gay Hunting\u2019 Website Found Murdered in Russia<\/b><\/p>\n

Yelena Grigoryeva, a Russian LGBTQ activist who had been targeted on a \u2018gay<\/a> hunting\u2019 website inspired by the horror film Saw<\/em>, was murdered in St. Petersburg over the weekend. Grigoryeva\u2019s body was found in bushes near her home.<\/p>\n

The Moscow Times<\/em> reports<\/a>: \u2018The activist had regularly received death threats and reported them to the police, who did nothing to protect her before she was murdered,\u00a0fellow activist Dinar Idrisov\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0on Facebook on Monday. \u201cA reminder: Yelena was listed on the homophobic \u2018Saw\u2019 website which has long threatened LGBT activists across the country,\u201d photojournalist Georgy Markov\u00a0wrote<\/a>. Grigoriyeva had been stabbed at least eight times, the St. Petersburg Fontanka.ru news website\u00a0reported<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n

The BBC adds<\/a>: \u201cPolice have not confirmed the reports of death threats and it is not clear if the attack was linked to her activism. A suspect has been detained in connection with her murder, according to Fontanka. Along with campaigning for LGBT rights, Ms Grigoryeva also demonstrated against Russia\u2019s annexation of Ukraine\u2019s Crimea peninsula, the ill treatment of prisoners and a number of other human rights causes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NY Daily News <\/em>reported on the Saw<\/em>-inspired site, which was shut down last week<\/a>: \u2018Inspired by, and named after, the \u201cSaw\u2019 horror movie franchise, the website directed people to track down and assault people who were believed to be LGBTQ. When it started operating around April, 2018, \u201cSaw\u201d welcomed \u201cgay<\/a> hunters\u201d in a \u201cgame\u201d called \u201cChechnya\u2019s Comeback.\u201d It asked participants to find their targets, and publish their personal information online. According to\u00a0GayStarNews.com<\/a>, the site charged 200 rubles ($3) to go through its database. If someone found their name on the website, they had to pay 1,500 rubles ($23) to be removed. The \u201cgame\u201d offered legal protection to \u201cusers,\u201d and warned them that they could do anything, except kill the targets.\u2019<\/p>\n
