Berkeley, California will be renaming \u201cmanholes\u201d as \u201cmaintenance holes\u201d in official city documents in a bid to recognize nonbinary gender inclusivity. <\/p>\n

In addition fraternities and sororities will be referred to as \u201cCollegiate Greek system residences,\u201d \u201cmanpower\u201d will be termed \u201chuman effort,\u201d pregnant women<\/a> will be referred to as \u201cpregnant employees,\u201d and \u201cwatchmen\u201d will be called \u201cguards.\u201d<\/p>\n

CNN reports<\/a>: \u2018The item passed without discussion or comments and was not controversial, said Berkeley City Council member Rigel Robinson, the bill\u2019s primary author. The revised city documents also will replace instances of gendered pronouns, such as \u201che\u201d and \u201cshe\u201d with \u201cthey,\u201d according to the ordinance.\u2019<\/p>\n
