Pose<\/em> star Billy Porter is still reeling from his first-ever Emmy nomination<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Porter, who plays the emcee Pray Tell on the acclaimed FX series<\/a>, became the first-ever out-gay<\/a> African American actor nominated for Best Actor in a Drama at the Emmy Nominations on July 16. He remarked that he was \u201cfinally able to breathe\u201d following the announcement. Pose<\/em> also nabbed a nomination in the Best Drama category.<\/p>\n

Porter also trumpets his and the show\u2019s success as part of the ongoing struggle for acceptance by the queer community. \u201cIt really opens up and creates a different kind of conversation in a different space,\u201d he says of the show\u2019s nominations. \u201cIt\u2019s about representation. It\u2019s about all people\u2019s stories being told. It\u2019s about the art. We creative people have the power to transform hearts and minds doing the work that we do and I am just thrilled to be able to do that. It feels like a calling. I\u2019ve lived in that ministry, came up in the \u201980s and lived through the plague \u2014 and I\u2019m here for a reason. I\u2019m here so I can be on this other side to tell this story about this world. We\u2019re here. We\u2019ve always been here and we\u2019re not going anywhere \u2014 get used to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we were growing up, there was no context because you could never see it\u201d Porter adds. \u201cI\u2019ve always had huge dreams but I realized now that my dreams have been springboarded off of things I have already seen. They weren\u2019t about dreaming the impossible. They weren\u2019t about dreaming things that didn\u2019t exist. Ryan Murphy, Steven Canals, Brad Falchuk, FX<\/a>\u00a0 \u2014 everybody involved in the show taught me how to dream the impossible. The sky is the limit now, honey!\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid the celebration of his nomination, Porter also noted that he has a birthday coming up: his 50th, which arrives one day before the awards ceremony. He also added that an Emmy would make for a great birthday gift. Personally, we can\u2019t think of a better gift for such a talented man<\/a>.<\/p>\n
