NBA superstar Dwight Howard is finally opening up about those gay<\/a> rumors that began circulating around him last year.<\/p>\n

A little backstory: Last November, a man<\/a> by the name of Masin Elije alleged that he had engaged in an ongoing sexual relationship with the NBA player and that he threatened to \u201cbeat the sh*t out of him\u201d if he ever went public about it.<\/p>\n

Elije claimed he first met Howard at a Wild n\u2019 Out\u00a0<\/em>party. They kept in touch on Instagram where things \u201cescalated quickly.\u201d Soon they were swapping nudes<\/a> and talking every night before bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was fine, 6\u201911, goofy, very charming, NO WIFE and NEVER been married so of course I was interested. I kept it real with him, and he kept it real with me about everything EXCEPT 1 THING\u2026..\u201d Elije wrote in a since-deleted social media post.<\/p>\n

He claimed that Howard began secretly attending \u201ctransgender sex<\/a> parties\u201d without Elije\u2019s knowledge, and when Elije learned about it, Howard threatened him with violence.<\/p>\n

Elije further claimed that Howard offered him \u201chush money\u201d in exchange for signing an NDA about their relationship. When he refused, Howard\u2019s camp \u201cbegun to tell me things like \u2018we know where you\u2019re at\u2019 \u2018we are watching you\u2019 \u2018we saw what building you came out of\u2019 and even went as deep to telling me \u2018You gon find a new residence.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo at this point, I am afraid for my life, I\u2019m panicking, I\u2019m having anxiety attacks and for a whole week I was bullied by Dwight\u2019s team and Dwight Howard stood there and allowed his team to harass me, and I became a \u2018f*ggot in a wig\u2019 when Dwight is a 6\u201911 BOTTOM,\u201d Elije\u00a0 said in a video<\/a> posted to his social media account.<\/p>\n

From the very beginning, Howard has denied the allegations, though he hasn\u2019t spoken much about them, other than to say they aren\u2019t true.<\/p>\n

Until now.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with Fox Sports 1\u2019s Kristine Leahy, the 33-year-old talks about the impact the rumors had on him, saying that for a while they made him \u201cnever want to come outside again.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cI went through a situation last year that really just set me free,\u201d he recalls. \u201cIt ended up being a situation that was\u2014it went viral.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howard, who was traded\u00a0to the Memphis Grizzlies from the Washington Wizards during the offseason, says he received hate mail from people he didn\u2019t know but who were convinced he was gay<\/a>. Their vitriol helped him to understand why so many people, athletes especially, are still afraid to come out.<\/section>\n

\u201cPeople were talking about it, and it upset me because I didn\u2019t even know who the person was. Why would somebody who I never met, never had any contact with, make up a whole story about me? I saw all the hate, the pure hate, from people that I\u2019ve never met before, just pile up everywhere I went.\u201d<\/p>\n
