In Wake of Mass Outrage, Israel\u2019s Education Minister Flips and is Now \u2018Strongly Opposed\u2019 to Gay Conversion Therapy<\/b><\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s new education minister, Rafi Peretz, has done a sudden about face in the wake of worldwide condemnation of his remarks supporting<\/a> harmful gay<\/a> conversion therapy.<\/p>\n

Peretz wrote a letter to school principals on Tuesday, The Jerusalem Post<\/em> reports<\/a>, in which he said of students confused about their sexual orientation: \u201cI always listened intently to their distress and on occasion recommended they consult with professionals. However, I never gave them a cold shoulder or advised them to do conversion therapy to which I am strongly opposed. I know that conversion therapy is illegitimate and severe. This is my unambiguous position.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last week, in an interview with\u00a0Israel<\/a>\u2018s Channel 12, Peretz,\u00a0endorsed<\/a> harmful gay<\/a> conversion therapy for minors. Following the interview\u2019s broadcast,\u00a0hundreds of protesters in Tel Aviv called on Peretz to resign<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Said Peretz when asked whether it\u2019s possible to \u201cconvert\u201d people who believe they\u2019re gay<\/a>: \u201cI think it is possible. I have to tell you that I have a very deep understanding of this kind of education and I have done this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked what he would say to a student who said they thought they might be gay<\/a>, Peretz replied: \u201cFirst of all I\u2019d hug him. I\u2019d say very warm things. I\u2019d say to him \u2018let\u2019s think, let\u2019s learn, let\u2019s contemplate.\u2019 The objective is that he first of all will understand himself better. And then he will decide. I give him the facts and at this point I am leaving you and now you decide.\u201d<\/p>\n
