There\u2019s a sad anecdote that circulates every Pride of an NYC subway passenger who sees fellow queers removing their rainbow gear on their ways home because they\u2019re afraid of getting harassed away from the parade. The story is apocryphal, but it conveys a truth: It\u2019s not always safe to express your queerness in public.<\/p>\n

Take this incident for example\u2026<\/p>\n

In a video<\/a> recorded in a McDonald\u2019s during Pride weekend in Barcelona, Spain this last Friday, a man<\/a> in a neon yellow tank top, short cut-off jean shorts and sneakers was harassed by a presumably hetero hater with a fauxhawk. The hater tells the man<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019m going to beat you till you become heterosexual.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Gay Star News<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe homophobe expressed that he \u2018didn\u2019t agree\u2019 with the ensemble, and told him that it was \u2018disrespectful\u2019 to be dressed \u2018like that\u2019 in public.<\/p>\n

\u2018I don\u2019t care if you\u2019re queer,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n

\u2018I really have to put up with a guy<\/a> telling me that I can\u2019t dress like this?\u2019 the victim complained to the security man<\/a> in the clip. Flagging that is it \u2018Gay Pride Day.\u2019<\/p>\n

Moreover, the man<\/a> replied: \u2018I don\u2019t care what day it is, it is also a good day to punch you. Do you want to see?\u2019 \u2026<\/p>\n

\u2018When you go out, I am going to hit you so hard your queerness will disappear.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The person recording the video<\/a> eventually intervened and police arrived soon after, though the harassed man<\/a> opted not to press charges.<\/p>\n

The Spanish accompanying the tweet above reads: \u201cToday my friend has suffered an attack at a McDonald\u2019s in Barcelona for his way of dressing so \u201cfeminine\u201d. It is ironic that this happens the same day as the proclamation of pride but we must continue fighting to end these acts and these people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s Pride organization also spoke out against the incident, urging the harassed man<\/a> to file an official report so that his incident doesn\u2019t go forgotten.<\/p>\n
