Her one-woman<\/a> show may be called\u00a0\u201cHelp Me, I\u2019m Dying,\u201d but Katya Zamolodchikova, aka Katya, aka Brian McCook is doing just fine, thank you.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0RuPaul<\/a>\u2018s Drag Race<\/em> season 7 and\u00a0Drag Race\u00a0<\/em>All-Stars<\/em> season 2 standout has had a wild ride, from coming up in the Boston drag scene to finding a massive audience through TV and an ever-expanding one with the success UNHhhh<\/em>, her web series with Trixie Matell.\u00a0UNHhhh<\/em> was later picked up by Vice for television as The Trixie and Katya Show\u00a0<\/em>for one season, and now the pair are back to producing\u00a0UNHhhh.<\/em><\/p>\n

Along the way, McCook took time off from the series, and from drag, to focus on mental health, and his willingness to be open about the process was a welcomed dose of honest realness.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s easy to scroll through Instagram and convince yourself that people are living the \u2018dream,\u2019 but we all have work to do throughout our lives. As queer people, some of that work can be especially challenging to unravel.<\/p>\n

Queerty\u2019s<\/em> Dan Tracer<\/a> caught up with Katya to talk about dreams, drag names, shapeshifting, and more.<\/p>\n

Hi Katya! Good morning\u2013is it morning where you are?<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Yeah, I\u2019m in bed still.<\/p>\n

Oh wow, that\u2019s actually the perfect location for my first question. As Katya, part of the gig is you have to be so extroverted out in public, but you also seem like an \u2018inner world\u2019 queen, too. What are your dreams like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

[Laughs]<\/p>\n

It\u2019s going to be that kind of an interview.<\/strong><\/p>\n

OK perfect. Actually last night I had sleep paralysis! Do you know what that is?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s like when you consciously wake up but your body is completely inaccessible.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

I got it a lot as a kid. I\u2019d start to fall asleep and then I\u2019d feel like I\u2019m being attacked. The one that happened last night, I was on my side and I felt like there were two people, one on my back and one facing me, that were trying to attack and I was trying to scream \u201cHelp!\u201d And I couldn\u2019t get anything out of my mouth.<\/p>\n

Oh that\u2019s terrifying.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s horrible, yeah. But there were two sleep monsters this time. Usually, there\u2019s only one.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Have you ever lucid dreamed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes. Yes!<\/p>\n

What\u2019s that like for you? I have too, I\u2019m obsessed with lucid dreaming.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Yeah it\u2019s really cool. It invariably goes sexual.<\/p>\n

Yeah?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because I\u2019m in a dream and I can do whatever I want.<\/p>\n

Right, you have that moment where you\u2019re like, \u201cOh,\u00a0anything\u2019s<\/em> possible?!\u201d Mine\u2019s always flying. I\u2019ll think, \u201cOh I can do anything? I can fly!\u201d And then I\u2019ll float up and get so excited that I wake up.<\/strong><\/p>\n

[Laughs] Oh that\u2019s funny.<\/p>\n

So in dream world or in real world, if you could choose between invisibility or shapeshifting as a power, which one would you go for?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh shapeshifting for sure.<\/p>\n

I mean you kind of already are a shapeshifter.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Right but it would be so much easier to just do it at the drop of a hat.<\/p>\n

Oh god, yeah, that would save you several years of your life. And plausible scenarios, if a UFO came down right now, and some goopy alien prince discreetly took you aside, and you know, offered you some tea, was very nice to you, and then gave you the chance to leave, right now, no time to tie up loose ends, no goodbyes, would you go?<\/strong><\/p>\n

[Pause] Yep.<\/p>\n

Yeah, that\u2019s fair. And if he said you could make one phone call<\/a> before you left, who would you call<\/a>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019d call<\/a> my mom. Or\u2026 maybe Barak Obama.<\/p>\n

Oh! [Laughs] I sort of assumed you\u2019d have to have the person\u2019s phone number already, but that wasn\u2019t part of the question. I would love to hear that conversation, you, on the line with President Obama, just before your interstellar departure. But leaving Barry out of the picture, you\u2019re close with your family, yeah?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah they\u2019re amazing.<\/p>\n

So they\u00a0do<\/em> know you\u2019re a drag queen?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nope. They think I work for UPS.<\/p>\n

Your secret\u2019s safe with us.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have a really wonderful family, an older brother and a younger sister. They\u2019re great.<\/p>\n

Has your older brother ever tried on one of your wigs?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well we used to have wig parties.<\/p>\n

Oh!<\/strong><\/p>\n

And he just had a child. So I\u2019m an uncle now, and I\u2019m looking forward to procuring some child wigs.<\/p>\n

What names did you cycle through before becoming hermetically sealed to Katya?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gosh I can\u2019t even remember\u2026 There was Sigourney Beaver. She was in the mix at some point.<\/p>\n

Stop it. The name I\u2019ve been floating for years is So-horny<\/a> Beaver.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ohh that\u2019s like a double-whammy.<\/p>\n

And run us through the characters in your one-woman<\/a> show, Help Me, I\u2019m Dying<\/em><\/a>. It\u2019s a one-woman<\/a> show, but you come out in multiple characters. Katya is there but she doesn\u2019t snag all the stage time. Who are the other featured players?<\/strong><\/p>\n

So there\u2019s Katya the Russian character, so I go through her origin story, and then I come out as another character called Trish, who\u2019s like a junkie\/townie from the suburbs of Boston. And then I come out as me, like, without any character, just me in drag, which is slightly confusing.<\/p>\n

Which of those three is the most comfortable for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Probably the Russian one. I just get into the accent and the origin story, which changes all the time. And I love that about it. It\u2019s like, \u201cNow I\u2019m going to tell the truth,\u201d and it\u2019s never the truth.<\/p>\n

I was lucky to have seen the show at the ACE Theater in Los Angeles back in March, which featured Trish in the most bizarre and brilliant physical comedy crowd-play I could ever imagine. For people reading this, you brought an audience member up onto the stage, sat him in a chair and crawled all over him, creating what I can only describe as some kind of kinetic, living, comedy sculpture. Has it changed or evolved as you\u2019ve been touring?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, it changes all the time. In Singapore, I actually had another performer come up who I used to perform with in Boston, join me on stage, and we did a duet \u2014 we did Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion\u2019s \u201cTell Him,\u201d which is a song about a woman<\/a> in love \u2014 she\u2019s so in love with this guy<\/a> but she\u2019s too afraid to let him know how she feels, and the audience member we brought up was\u00a0really<\/em> not up for it. He was this straight dude who was probably dragged there by his girlfriend<\/a>, and the song is\u00a0really<\/em> long, so he was just tortured for probably like, ten minutes. It was hysterical.<\/p>\n

And did the audience love that or was it uncomfortable?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh they loved it.<\/p>\n

That sounds right.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah it was amazing to watch and probably harrowing for him to experience.<\/p>\n

But maybe, ultimately, a good experience for him?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, or maybe not!<\/p>\n

Or not! And so you\u2019re touring now, you have quite an ambitious schedule ahead of you, and I strongly encourage folks to make it out to your gigs \u2014 how does the tour life treat you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It hasn\u2019t been so bad! And we\u2019re actually on a bus starting next month, which I\u2019m very excited about.<\/p>\n

And I see you have a show in New York during World Pride, are you even ready for that much queerness?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n

They say 4.5 million people are expected to descend upon the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s too much gay<\/a>, I think I\u2019m going to be homophobic by the end of that.<\/p>\n

And the reason it\u2019s this massive confluence is it\u2019s the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, and here at\u00a0Queerty,<\/em> we\u2019re doing our Pride50 series<\/a> honoring 50 LGBTQ trailblazers. We\u2019ve been asking people where they see the movement headed in the\u00a0next<\/em> 50 years. What do you think Pride100 will look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, it\u2019ll probably look like Atlantis because we\u2019re going to be underwater. But one of the things I find encouraging is that young people these days, their conception of sexuality is much more fluid and less defined, which I really like. On the one hand, Gay Pride is great, but I also love this kind of like\u2026 \u2018it doesn\u2019t matter\u2019 sort of attitude about it. You\u2019re interested in who you\u2019re interested in, it\u2019s the blurring of the boundaries of sexual identity.<\/p>\n

Identity changes. I think it would be better if there were more consensus on larger, broader issues like compassion, non-violence.<\/p>\n

That sounds pretty good to me. Now one last question, a really important one. There is this theory that when the Big Bang happened, it actually created our reality and a second mirror reality which is just like ours except time moves in reverse. So I want to know\u2026 what is your drag name in the mirror reality?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ohh\u2026 in the\u00a0Benjamin Button\u00a0<\/em>one. Oh gosh. Sharon Stone.<\/p>\n

Sharon Stone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sharon Stone, yeah. Just like the actress.<\/p>\n

Oh because I guess she wouldn\u2019t really exist as \u201cSharon Stone\u201d in that universe.<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, she\u2019d be something else.<\/p>\n

So you\u2019d just be Sharon Stone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019d just be Sharon Stone with a dick<\/a> and that would be the huge gag in\u00a0Basic Instinct<\/em>.<\/p>\n
