Gay men<\/a> wrongly assume \u2018attractive\u2019 guys<\/a> are less likely to have STDs, study finds<\/b><\/p>\n

A new\u00a0study<\/a> has found that gay<\/a> and bisexual<\/a> men<\/a> are more likely to believe men<\/a> they find \u201cphysically attractive\u201d are less likely to have STDs.<\/p>\n

Researchers from the University of Maryland surveyed roughly 200 gay<\/a> and bisexual<\/a> men<\/a> living across the United States.<\/p>\n

Participants were shown clips of different men<\/a> then asked to rank them based on their physical appearances. Afterwards, they were asked a series of questions about the men<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The questions included: \u201cHow likely is it that you would have a one-night stand with this person?\u201d, whether they thought the men<\/a> has \u201cpositive partner traits,\u201d whether they would have unprotected sex<\/a> with this person, and \u201cHow likely do you think it is that you would get HIV\u2026 from this person?\u201d<\/p>\n

On average, the men<\/a> who found to be more physically attractive were also rated less likely to have any STDs. Not only that, but participants also said they were less likely to use condoms with them during sex<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Researchers attribute this to the \u201chalo effect,\u201d which is defined as the tendency to associate positive traits with physical attractiveness even when there is no other evidence to support the association.<\/p>\n

\u201cArousal associated with perceived physical attractiveness, especially in the context of sexual intercourse, may override intentions to use condoms,\u201d Dr. Tom Nardarzynski tells Gay Star News.<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cNevertheless, the findings of this research demonstrate a specific bias in thinking that sex<\/a> with an attractive person could be less risky, which is unlikely to be accurate. Also, physical attractiveness is highly subjective, therefore it cannot be a reliable determinant of HIV status.\u201d<\/p>\n
