Empire<\/em> co-creator Lee Daniels said he\u2019s \u201cbeyond embarrassed\u201d that he came out so forcefully in defense of Jussie Smollett <\/a>after initial reports broke that the Empire actor had been the victim of a hate crime, which later turned out to be staged by the actor himself.<\/p>\n

Said Daniels to Vulture<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019m beyond embarrassed. I think that when it happened, I had a flash of me running from bullies. I had a flash of my whole life, of my childhood, my youth, getting beaten.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniels added that Smollett\u2019s behavior was something out of the blue and would be a \u201chuge betrayal\u201d if \u201cit turned out that he did it, was guilty, and all of it\u2019s accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniels said that he still holds out hope that it\u2019s not true that it was staged: \u201cOf course, there\u2019s some doubt. I\u2019m telling you that because I love him so much. That\u2019s the torture that I\u2019m in right now, because it\u2019s literally if it were to happen to your son and your child, how would you feel? You would feel, Please, God, please let there be that glimmer of hope that there is some truth in this story.<\/em> That\u2019s why it\u2019s been so painful. It was a flood of pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Continued Daniels, \u201cWe weren\u2019t there. I can\u2019t judge him. That\u2019s only for the f**king lady<\/a> or man<\/a> with that black robe and God. I had to detach myself and stop calling him, because it was taking away the time I have for my kids, the time I have for my partner. It was affecting my spirit and other shows, everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
