Vandals Target Gay High School Student\u2019s Home with \u2018Kill Yourself\u2019 Graffiti, Forks, and Suicide Hotline \u2018For-Sale\u2019 Sign: WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n

A gay<\/a> high school student\u2019s suburban Chicago home was targeted by vandals who placed a \u201cfor-sale sign\u201d against a tree with \u201ca toll-free suicide prevention hotline number, an obscenity and \u2018KYS\u2019 \u2014 a known acronym for kill yourself,\u201d written on it.<\/p>\n

The vandals also stuck several hundred plastic forks in the lawn.<\/p>\n

The Daily Herald <\/em>reports<\/a>: \u2018[Scott] Nelles said his daughter, who will be a Barrington High School junior, was harassed on social media a week earlier for being openly lesbian<\/a>. He said his family has been gratified by the outpouring support from fellow residents and the diligence of police investigators working the case. Some residents even dropped off items showing their support, including rainbow pinwheels and a heart-shaped balloon. He said the message that was part of the vandalism was most upsetting to him and his wife, Sharon.\u2019<\/p>\n

Said Nelles to the paper: \u201cForks in the yard, that\u2019s like a prank. It sounds to me like it\u2019s today\u2019s toilet paper and, actually, probably a lot easier to clean up than toilet paper. But the fact there was a sign in the yard and it had the suicide prevention hotline and had written \u2018Go (expletive) KYS,\u2019 or go kill yourself, that\u2019s a pretty clear message. And a pretty clear message of hate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neighbors have dropped off messages of support to the family, planting rainbow pinwheels and balloons in the yard. Community officials have denounced the hate crime.<\/p>\n
