{"id":89764,"date":"2019-06-04T14:26:22","date_gmt":"2019-06-04T18:26:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/city-orders-two-year-study-on-rainbow-crosswalks-after-people-complain-about-feeling-unsafe\/"},"modified":"2019-06-04T14:26:22","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T18:26:22","slug":"city-orders-two-year-study-on-rainbow-crosswalks-after-people-complain-about-feeling-unsafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/city-orders-two-year-study-on-rainbow-crosswalks-after-people-complain-about-feeling-unsafe\/","title":{"rendered":"City orders two-year study on rainbow crosswalks after people complain about feeling unsafe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>City orders two-year study on rainbow crosswalks after people complain about feeling unsafe<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/queerty-prodweb.s3.amazonaws.com\/2019\/06\/rainbow-crosswalk-670x318.jpg\" alt=\"Rainbow crosswalk\" width=\"670\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/queerty-prodweb.s3.amazonaws.com\/2019\/06\/rainbow-crosswalk-670x318.jpg 670w, https:\/\/queerty-prodweb.s3.amazonaws.com\/2019\/06\/rainbow-crosswalk-400x190.jpg 400w, https:\/\/queerty-prodweb.s3.amazonaws.com\/2019\/06\/rainbow-crosswalk.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\"><\/p>\n<p>The city of\u00a0Moncton, New Brunswick says it is waiting for the results of a\u00a0national report looking into the safety of rainbow crosswalks.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"23\">City spokesperson Isabelle LeBlanc says officials\u00a0have ordered the study from the Transportation Association of Canada and must carefully review the results before they can allow any more pedestrian walkways to be painted purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"30\">This all\u00a0comes\u00a0<em>after\u00a0<\/em>the city already began painting some of its crosswalks to show support for the LGBTQ community in 2017, but abandoned the project in 2018 after people expressed \u201csafety concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p data-reactid=\"30\">Erica Andersen, a spokesperson for the Transportation Association of Canada, said that \u201cadditional research\u201d still needed to be conducted on \u201cnon-standard colors and designs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"30\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.news.yahoo.com\/moncton-puts-rainbow-crosswalks-hold-162729455.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Yahoo! News<\/em><\/a> reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-reactid=\"31\">She said that in April a group looking into\u00a0\u201cdecorative crosswalk pavement markings\u201d found there was insufficient data to reach a conclusion. Andersen said she expects a new research project will be proposed this fall to look at \u201cimpacts on driver perception\/recognition\u00a0\u2026 levels of driver or pedestrian distraction, effects on recognition by automated vehicles\/driver assistance systems, and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-reactid=\"32\">Anderson believes the results from that study\u00a0\u201cwould likely be available sometime in 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"32\">But members of the Moncton area LGBTQ community aren\u2019t buying it.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p data-reactid=\"27\">\u201cThere aren\u2019t any other municipalities in our experience that have regressed on their practice of painting rainbow crosswalks,\u201d Charles MacDougall, a co-ordinator with River of Pride, said this week.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"27\">\u201cIt\u2019s a large bureaucratic process that is far too complicated for our liking.
